(1) Deputy Prime Minister receives Chairman of Shandong Agricultural Industry & Commerce Group Corporation

YANGON, 8 June - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Chairman of Shandong Agricultural Industry & Commerce Group Corporation of People's Republic of China Mr Li Chuan Yue and party who called at his office at 9.30 am today.

Also present at the call were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials.

They discussed investment sectors on cultivation of sugarcane and construction of sugar mill in Myanmar.

YANGON 8 June - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Chief Representative of Tokio Marine and Fire Insurance Co Ltd of Japan Mr Kenji Kawanishi and his successor Mr Yoshikazu Matsumoto who called at his office at 10.30 am today.

Also present at the call were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials.

YANGON, 8 June - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met Professor of Gynaecology & Obstetrics Dr H Michael Runge of Karl Storz GmbH & Co (Germany) and party who called al his office this afternoon.

YANGON, 8 June - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt met Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Muhammad bin Noh who called at his office at 1 pm today.

(6) Minister inspects Yangon International Terminal Thilawa

YANGON, 8 June - Minister for Transport, Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe inspected Yangon International Thilawa Port this morning.

Accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay and officials, the minister heard a report on progress in piling at No 11 and No 10 wharves and future programmes presented by the Project Engineer U Aung Gyi. Managing Director U Thein Htay also reported on points of the entire project.

The minister and party inspected the piling at the wharves.

On arrival at Myanmar International Terminal Thilawa (MITT), they were presented a report on functions of the port with audio-visual aids by General Manager Mr Cheung Ching-Tai.

The minister and party inspected freight handling services at the port. They gave suggestions to officials.

(7) Commander stresses need to exceed economic targets in Yangon Division

YANGON, 8 June - A meeting was held at Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Office to coordinate means to exceed the economic target of the division in 1999-2000.Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than gave a speech. Yangon Division was among the regions of the nation enjoying the highest productivity rate, he noted, saying the State Peace and Development Council was laying down year-wise economic plans for states and divisions annually.

Also present at the meeting were members of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, division-level officials, chairmen and members of District/Township peace and Development Councils, officials and guests.

(8) Opening of link road cuts travel time between Mandalay, Magway Divisions

YANGON, 8 June - Opening of 66-mile Taungdwingyi-Taungnyo-Pyinmana Road linking Yangon-Mandalay and Pyay-Magway highways cut time in traveling between Magway and Mandalay Divisions, said Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun.

Speaking at the inauguration of the road today, the minister also said building of the 12-feet wide tarred road cost K 64.6 million.

Today's ceremony marked the opening of the 22-mile section in Magway Division. Opening of the section in Mandalay Division was held yesterday.

Thirty-four miles of Magway-Natmauk Road had already been tarred and that the road would be inaugurated soon, said the minister.

The government was endeavoring to ensure proportionate progress in the entire nation, extending total length of roads in the entire Myanmar to 3,669 miles and total number of bridges to 216 he said.

(9) Minister inspects mines and refineries in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 8 June - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, together with Managing Director of No-2 Mining Enterprise U Tin Win, Managing Director of No-3 Mining Enterprise U Hsan Tun, Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Hla Aung and Deputy Director of Mining Department U Tha Maung, inspected mines and refineries under the ministry in Mandalay Division from 4 to 8 June.

The minister and party went to Mogok on 5 June, and inspected Yadana Gadaygada Mine being undertaken by Myanma Economic Holdings Ltd and mining works of entrepreneurs of Shwepyiaye and Linyaungchi Mine.

He gave instructions on boosting production. At night, the minister met the staff of the mining enterprises and urged them to do their duties honestly and diligently.

On 6 June, the minister and party met gems entrepreneurs, and spoke of the need for them to be loyal to the State, to give taxes correctly and carry out their works in accord with rules and regulations.

The minister and party met gold entrepreneurs at the five-mile camp in Thabeikkyin Township, and called on them to cooperate with local people and officials.

Then, they inspected the refining of gold at the E-1 work-site and operation of Phayaungtaung Gold Refinery being run by Myanma Golden Point Family Co Ltd and the Ministry of Mines on mutually beneficial basis.

On 7 June, the minister and party went to No-1 Iron and Steel Mill in PyinOoLwin. The minister inspected the mill and gave instructions on production of good quality products. The minister and party arrived back here today.

(10) Bureau of Special Investigation holds first four-monthly meeting

YANGON, 8 June - The first four-monthly work coordination meeting of the Bureau of Special Investigation under the Ministry of Home Affairs was held in the meeting hall of the ministry today, addressed by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing. The director-general and directors reported on works done during the first four months.

In his address, the minister urged all to expose business-related crimes and malpractice of the government servants and to take action according to law.

It is necessary for all to carry out four tasks in accord with five yardsticks such as morale, discipline, loyalty, unity and efficiency; everybody is to discharge their assigned duties with a sense of responsibility.

(11) Minister meets Deputy Secretary General of SEAFDEC

YANGON, 8 June - Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met Deputy Secretary General of South East Asia Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC) Mr Masao Shimomura and party who called at his office at 8.30 am today.

The group called on Director-General U Than Tun of Fisheries Department and officials at Fisheries Department on Sinmin Street, Ahlon Township at 9.30 am today. They discussed technological cooperation in fisheries.

Similarly, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met Chairman of First International Co of Republic of Korea Mr Hyung Oh No and party who called at this office at 2 pm today.

Next, Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industry Mr Abdul Awal Mintoo and party, accompanied by Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Jahangir Saadat, who called at his office at 4 pm today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister U Aung Thein, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry, head of office and officials.

(12) Olympic Day commemorative photo contest

YANGON, 8 June - As a movement in commemoration of World Olympic Day which falls on 23 June, Myanmar Sports Writers Association will hold a photo contest on sports activities.

(14) Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sujata passes away

YANGON, 8 June - The Religious Affairs Department today announced that Padana Nayaka Sayadaw of Yadanakan Kyaungtaik in Minhla Township, Magway Division member of the State Central Working Committee of the Sangha Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sujata, aged 85, vassa 66, passed away at 7.35 am on 6 June, 8th Waning of Nayon 1361 ME.

(15) K 500,000 donated to MMCWA

YANGON, 8 June - Well-wishers U Aung Ko Win - wife Thiha Thudhamma Theingi Thiri Thudhamma Theingi Daw Nan Than Htwe and family donated K 500,000 for Children's All-round Development Centre of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at MMCWA Multi-purpose Building at the comer of Parami and Thanthuma Roads in South Okkalapa Township this morning.

YANGON, 8 June - Visiting Chinese writers delegation led by member of Panel of Patrons of Writers Association of the People's Republic of China Mr Shu Peide visited Myanma Gems Museum on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon.

(17) Artistes who helped in Armed Forces Day TV feature honoured

YANGON, 8 June - Artistes who in the 54th anniversary Armed Forces Day commemorative TV feature "Thuyegaung Thonyauk Hnint Khayi-the" were honoured at the Myanma Radio and Television on Pyay Road this morning.

Present on the occasion were Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General of MRTV U Khin Maung Htay, officials, Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon U Myint Naing and artistes.

Making a speech on the occasion, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein said the TV feature was produced by MRTV with the assistance provided by the Ministry of Defence, and it has achieved success to some extent due to concerted efforts of artistes and film technicians concerned.

(19) 95 members resign from Myaung Township NLD

YANGON, 8 June - Nineteen-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myaung Township, Sagaing Division.

Nineteen-five members of Myaung Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 24 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

YANGON, 8 June - The prize presentation ceremony of Wushu Tournament, sponsored by Myanmar Wushu Federation, was held at Padonma Wushu Training Camp yesterday.

After the final matches, Vice-President of MWF Major Kyaw Kyaw presented championship trophy to Ministry of Defence team.

YANGON, 8 June - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win attended opening of 1999 National Taekwondo Championship which took place at Aung San Gymnasium this morning.
