YANGON, 6 June - The 1999 World Environment Day was today observed at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road with the sponsorship of the National Commission for Environmental Affairs (NCEA) in conjunction with the prize-giving ceremony for the World Environment Day commemorative colour photo competition.

Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt made a speech and presented prizes to the winners in the colour photo competition.

(2) Secretary-1 attends meeting of Leading Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 6 June - Patron of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the meeting of the Leading Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda- at the pagoda this morning.

In his address, the Secretary-l said that all-round renovation works need to be carried out continuously.

The Shwehtidaw could be hoisted successfully atop the Shwedagon Pagoda, and after achieving success in carrying out such a mammoth task, necessary works need to be done incessantly with added momentum.

The works related to gilding the pagoda will continue to be carried out as soon as the open season sets in; it is necessary to elaborately decorate religious buildings in connection with renovation and repair works.

Arrangements are to be made to get the people to know that all-round perpetual renovation works are being done continuously and enable them to make generous contributions.

Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint reported on arrangements for publishing books on hoisting the Shwehtidaw atop the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Then, a general round of discussions followed.

Afterwards, the Secretary-l attended to the requirements in connection with the reports.

The Secretary-l paid homage to Padamya Myetshin Buddha Image on the upper terrace of the pagoda and inspected the renovation of religious buildings on the platform of the pagoda.

(3) Secretary-2 inspects 2,000-ton cold storage of Annawa Fisheries Co Ltd

YANGON, 6 June - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Brig-Gen Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and officials, arrived at the 2,000 ton Cold Storage of Annawa Fisheries Co Ltd in Nyaungdan in Pazundaung Township at 10.30 am today.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected fish and prawn storage and functions of the ice factory. Managing Director of Annawa Fisheries Co Ltd U Htay Myint and officials conducted the Secretary-2 round the factory. Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party met Chairman and members of Myanmar Aquaculture and Fisheries Association, offshore trawler entrepreneurs and fisheries entrepreneurs.

(4) Secretary-2 inspected construction of Maha Bandoola Bridge across Pazundaung Creek

YANGON, 6 June - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected construction of Maha Bandoola Bridge across Pazundaung Creek this morning.

The bridge which will link Pazundaung and Dawbon Townships is being built by Public Works.

At the briefing hall, Deputy Superintending Engineer U Ohn Han reported on start of the project, construction of main bridge and approach bridges and progress of work.

Chairman of Yangon East District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aye Lwin reported on resettlement of some houses that are in the project area. Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than reported on the waterway in Pazundaung Creek and assistance of the ministry.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on security of materials, minimizing loss and wastage, work-site safety and performance of work according to set standard.

The Secretary-2 inspected scale model of the bridge and work done. He was conducted round by Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe and officials.

The six-lane suspension-type main bridge with six feet wide walkways on both sides is 787.2 feet long and 72 feet wide and total length of the bridge including approach bridges is 2,856 feet. Clearance of the bridge is 400 feet wide and 45 feet high.

The 60-ton vehicles can pass the bridge. Efforts are being made for completion of the bridge as targeted and 70 per cent of the project has been completed.

(5) Myanmar industrial delegation arrives back from Japan

YANGON, 6 June - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung welcomed back Myanmar industrial delegation led by Deputy Minister for Industry-l Brig-Gen Kyaw Win who arrived back here from Japan at Yangon International Airport this evening.

The delegation was also welcomed back at the airport by Deputy Minister for
Industry-l Brig-Gen Thein Tun, directors-general and managing directors and
officials of the ministry .

(6) Minister U Win Aung discusses bilateral relations, cooperation in ROK, Japan

YANGON, 6 June - At the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Mr Hong Song-young of the Republic of Korea Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung paid three-day goodwill visit, 31 May beginning to the Republic of Korea.

During the goodwill visit Foreign Minister U Win Aung met with the President of the Republic of Korea Mr Kim Dae-jung, Foreign Minister Hong Song-young, Minister for Agriculture and Forest Mr Kim Seoung-young, Minister for Trade Mr Han Duck-soo and President of the Sejong Research Institute and discussed bilateral relations and cooperation. The Minister then visited the Daewoo and Hyundai Industrials Complexes, met with the Chairman and respective authorities and discussed matters on the economic cooperation and investments.

After the tour of Republic of Korea Minister U Win Aung proceeded to Japan on 2 June to attend the International Conference on Future of Asia sponsored by Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc. The Minister presented a paper entitled "Myanmar in 21 Century". Consequently Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, during his stay in Japan, had met with Japanese Foreign Minister Mr Masahiko Komura, members of the House of Representatives Mr Kabun Muto, Mr Koiichi Kato, Mr Kazuo Aichi, Mr Shingo Nishimura and President of Nippon Foundation Mr Yohei Sasakawa and exchanged views on bilateral relations and economic cooperation's. U Win Aung attended the luncheon and dinner hosted by the Japanese Foreign Minister Mr Komura and the lunch eon by Deputy Foreign Minister Mr Nobutaka Machimura.

Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung left Japan on 5 June and arrived back here the same day.

(7) Myanmar cultural troupe arrives back

YANGON, 6 June - Under the sponsorship of MJRC Company, a ten-member Myanmar cultural troupe led by Director-General U Tin Htoo of Fine Arts Department arrived back here by air this evening after presenting their performance at First Asian Cultural Festival held in Japan under the cultural exchange programme between the two countries.

The delegation members were welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Deputy Director-General of Fine Arts Department U Ba San and departmental officials and their families.

(8) Deputy Minister for Transport tours Nyaungdon

YANGON, 6 June - Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, accompanied by officials of the Department of Water Resources and Riverine Development, inspected works for prevention of land erosion on the banks in Nyaungdon yesterday.

After inspecting the works, the deputy minister and party gave necessary instructions.

They later inspected the waterway between Nyaungdon and Setkawt and coordinated tasks to be carried out by township in cooperation with the departments.

On their way to Yangon, the deputy minister inspected the distillery in Hlinethaya.

(9) Deputy Minister leaves for PRC, Thailand

YANGON, 6 June - A Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Soe Myint left here this afternoon by air for the People's Republic of China, and Thailand to attend Kunming Trade and International Horticultural Exposition and Wood-based Industry in Thailand.

The delegation members were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Second Secretary Mr Li Zhong Yuan of the PRC Embassy, heads of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Forestry, officials and their families.

The delegation members are General Manager U Sein Win of Myanma Timber Enterprise, Assistant General Manager U Than Aung Naing and U Bo Ni of Forest Products Joint Venture Corporation Ltd.

(10) PRC writers delegation calls on CEC members of MWJA

YANGON, 6 June - According to the cultural exchange programme between the People's Republic of China and Myanmar, visiting Chinese writers delegation led by member of Panel of Patrons of Writers Association of the People's Republic of China Mr Shu Peide called on the Chairman of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association and CEC members at the Nanyu Hotel on Pansodan Street this evening. Joint-Secretary Daw Mya Mya Than (Ma Hnin Phwe) acted as master of ceremonies.

Present at the call were Chairman of MWJA U Kyaw Aung (Kyaw Aung), Vice-Chairmen U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung), U Than Maung (Than Maung) and U Tin Kha (Tekkatho Tin Kha), Secretary U Hla Tun (Hla Tun Twantay) and CEC members, Cultural Counselor Mr Ren Xiu Zhi and officials of the Chinese Embassy. The Chinese delegation visited Thanlyin Bridge in the afternoon.

The delegation, accompanied by Executive Editor U Khin Soe (Soe Soe-Padaung) of Sarpay Beikman, arrived in Bagan-NyaungU on 1 June and visited Bagan Archaeological Museum and pagodas.

On 2 June, they went to Popa and visited Popa Park and Mount Popa.

On 3 June, Chinese writers proceeded to Mandalay where they were welcomed at Mandalay Airport by Secretary of Mandalay City Development Committee Col Aye Tun Shwe and party.

The delegation called on Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein and party at the Mandalay City Hall. In the evening, they visited Mandalay Cultural Museum, Myanansankyaw Shwenandaw and Mandalay Hill. Then, they attended the dinner hosted by the Mandalay Mayor. On 5 June morning, the Chinese writers paid obeisance to Maha Muni Pagoda. In the evening, they attended the dinner hosted by the Chinese Consulate in Mandalay. Present on the occasion were MWJA CEC member Dr Maung Maung (Maung Hsin Chin) and chairmen of township WJAs in Mandalay.

(11) Over 54,000 eligible voters of Singu submit declarations expressing confidence in NLD representative-elect U Saw Htay

YANGON, 6 June - Over 54,000 eligible voters of Singu Township Constituency of PyinOoLwin District, Mandalay Division, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Saw Htay elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Singu Township Constituency and no support for him at the rallies held in four regions on 28 March morning.

A total of 13,589 local people of two wards and 10 village-tracts rallied at Singu region. Voter U Myint Swe, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U Saw Htay of NLD and no support for him. Then, Secretary of Township Video Asiayon U Hla Myint presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Saw Htay and no support for him signed by 16,842 eligible voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Law Officer Daw Khin Aye Win.

Similarly, 12,661 local people of 10 village-tracts rallied at Latpanhla region.

Merchant Daw Moe Thaw Maw expressed no confidence in U Saw Htay and no support for him. Farmer Daw Yu Yu Htwe presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Saw Htay and no support for him signed by 15,558 eligible voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Win Hlaing.

(12) 51 members resign from Pale Township NLD

YANGON, 6 June - Fifty-one members resigned from National League for Democracy of Pale Township, Sagaing Division.

Fifty-one members of Pale Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pale Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 17 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party polities of NLD.
