(1) Over K 17m donated for building of Thatbyinnyu Pagoda

YANGON, 5 June - Cash donations amounting to over K 17 million were made for building of Thatbyinnyu Pagoda at Dhammaythaka Sarthinthaik in Ward No 5, Mayangon Township, this morning for the seventh time.

On the occasion, Secretary of Work Committee Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung explained progress in construction of the pagoda and Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin funds for the construction and expenditure the Secretary-l gave instructions.

Yangon City Development Committee donated K 10 million, U Thein Win and Daw Ni of Shwethanlwin Co K 1,400,000 for 1,000 bags of cement, U Maung Weik family K 1 million, U Mya Han and Daw Khin Sabei Kyi family of Fortune International Co Ltd K 1 million, the Ministry of Transport K 500,000, the Ministry of Industry-2 K 500,000, Maj Aung Sein (Retd) and party K 468,000, wife Daw Khin Win Myint family K 350,000 in memory of General Thura Kyaw Htin, William Groups Co Ltd K 234,000, wife Daw Hla Mu family K 350,000 in memory of Maj-Gen Aye Kyaw, Brig-Gen Khin Maung and wife Daw Aye Aye Cho family K 200,000, the Ministry of Energy K 100,000, the Ministry of Electric Power K 100,000, Asia World Co Ltd K 100,000, Agricultural Development Bank K 100,000, U Win Swe and Dr Yi Yi Hla (a) Yuwady Khin Oo family K 100,000, U Ar Chun and family K 100,000, Daw Saw Myint and Daw Khin May family K 100,000 and others totaling 44 donors.

The donation amounted to K 17,557,000.The Secretary-l, Minister Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister U Thaung, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the donors.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and ministers inspected construction work.

(2) Secretary-1 inspects construction at ITBMU

YANGON, 5 June-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University this morning.

The Secretary-l and party were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe and officials of Religious Affairs Department, ITBMU and Public Works.

The Secretary-1 inspected completed lecture hall No 3 of the university. He proceeded to the sites of Administration Office and Library (Central) where officials of PW reported on progress of work and major renovation of women students hostel.

The Secretary-l then gave instructions.

(3) Secretary-2 inspects construction of Aung Zeya Bridge

YANGON, 5 June - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected construction of Aung Zeya Bridge across Hline River this morning.

The bridge will link Insein and Hlinethaya Townships. The Secretary-2 and party inspected construction of No-2 pier.

Next, Superintending Engineer (Project) of Public Works U Khin Maung Aye reported on Aung Zeya Bridge Construction Project and progress of work. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint gave supplementary report.

Deputy Minister U Pe Than, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and officials reported on work done sector-wise. The Secretary-2 then gave instructions.

The Secretary-2 also greeted Chinese technicians.

The four-lane main suspension bridge is 1,903 feet long and 60-ton vehicles can pass over it.

Efforts are being made for completion of the bridge as scheduled and 60 per cent of the project have been completed.

(4) Appointment of Ambassador of France agreed

YANGON, 6 June - The Government of the Union of Myanmar has agreed to the appointment of Mr Andre Marie Bernard Amaudric Du Chaffaut as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of France to the Union of Myanmar in succession to His Excellency Mr Bernard Pottier.

Mr Andre Marie Bernard Amaudric Du Chaffaut was born in 1942. Since 1970 he has served in various capacities in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in overseas French Diplomatic Missions. He is currently serving as First Class Counsellor of Foreign Affairs (Orient) in the French Foreign Ministry.

He was awarded "Chevalier de l'ordre national du Merite" (Knight of "Merit Order").

(5) Minister meets Korean businessmen

YANGON, 5 June - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt met Chairman Mr Hyung Oh No of Myanmar First International Co Ltd and businessmen from the Republic of Korea who called at his office this morning.

Also present were Deputy Ministers U Kyaw Tin and Brig-Gen Than Tun, Director-General of Department for Progress of Border Areas and National Races Col Wunna Maung Lwin and Director-General of Development Affairs Department Col Myo Myint and officials.

(6) Commander accepts teaching aid of Multi-media Classroom

YANGON, 5 June - A ceremony to present teaching aid of Multi-media Teaching Centre of Basic Education High School No 2 of Ahlon Tatmyo, North-West Command, was held at the school on 3 June morning.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win and staff officers, the Secretary of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council, the director of Basic Education Department (Upper Myanmar), well-wishers, students, parents and town-elders.

The commander gave an opening speech.

(7) Minister for Foreign Affairs back from ROK, Japan

YANGON, 5 June - Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung arrived back here by air this evening after paying a goodwill visit to the Republic of Korea at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Trade of ROK.

He also attended the Fifth international l Conference on the Future of Asia sponsored by Nihon Kezai Shimbun Daily in Tokyo.

The minister was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the News and Periodicals Enterprise, Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai and officials of Korean Embassy.

Adviser to NPE U Myat Thu who also attended the conference arrived back on the same flight.

YANGON, 5 June - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, General Secretary of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik and officials inspected Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna this morning.

(9) Provost Marshal's Shield Volleyball Championship ends

YANGON, 5 June - The prize presentation of 19th Provost Marshal's Shield Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Volleyball Championship was held at Hline Gymnasium this morning.

In women's match, No 1 Provost Company beat No 3 Provost Company 3-1. No 262 Provost Company beat No 122 Provost Company (Navy) 3-0 in men's match.

(10) Title recipient Sayadaw honoured

YANGON, 5 June - A ceremony to honour Presiding Sayadaw Bhadanta Agga Dhamma Bhivamsa, Agga Maha Pandita Title Recipient of Soonlongu Vipassana Meditation Centre, Taunggyi, war held at the centre on 29 May. Member of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Shwegu Sayadaw of Nyaungshwe invested the congregation with the Five Precepts, followed by administration of Ovadakahta by State Ovadacariya Agga Maha Pandita Theindaw Sayadaw of Taunggyi.

(11) USDA CEC member attends opening and closing of Multiplier Management Courses

YANGON, 5 June - Central Executive Committee member of Union Solidarity and Development Association U Saw Tun today attended the concluding ceremony of No 7 Multiplier Management Course and the opening ceremony of No 8 Multiplier Management Course for Executives of Thakayta Township Union Solidarity and Development Association.

(12) ES4E concludes Summer English course

YANGON, 5 June - The concluding ceremony of Summer English Course and certificate presentation of ES4E was held at the Kandawgyi Palace Hotel this morning. Corporate Adviser to the ES4E Mr Shinji Arima gave an opening speech and Principal Dr Soe Win gave a speech.

Trainees demonstrated the skills of lessons which they had learnt.

Corporate Adviser Mr Shinji Arima, Head of Security and Discipline Department of Yangon City Development Committee Police Col Khin Maung Tun, Administrator of Yangon West District Development Affairs Committee Major Kyaw Kyaw, Chairman of Yankin Township Peace and Development Council U Htay Win and officials presented certificates to the trainees. A total of 250 trainees attended the three-month course.

(13) UMFCCI meets business delegations of Malaysia, ROK

YANGON, 5 June - A six-member delegation led by Mayor Mr Baha Rudin bin Ahmad of Kangar Municipal Council (Perlis) of Malaysia arrived at Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry Office at No 504/506 on Merchant Street this morning.

They were welcomed there by President of UMFCCI U Win Myint, Central Executive Committee member U Sein Win Hlaing and Executive Officer U Kyaw Myint.

U Win Myint explained investment, opportunities economic and commercial matters in Myanmar.

U Sein Win Hlaing answered the queries of the delegation.

Similarly, Chairman Mr Yau Yo Do and party of Farm Equipment Production Company of Republic of Korea called on President of UMFCCI U Win Myint and officials.

They discussed commercial and investment matters between the two countries.

(14) Shwethingan offering ceremony at Shwedagon Pagoda to be documented

YANGON, 6 June - A coordination meeting on publication of documentary book on Mingala ceremony and offering of Shwethingan at the Shwedagon Pagoda was held at ancient museum Tazaung of the pagoda this afternoon.

It was attended by Chairman of Leading Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Chairman of Work Committee Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and officials.

Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and officials took part in discussions on publication of documentary book.

(15) Deputy Minister meets TEOs, school heads of Yangon Division

YANGON, 5 June - Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung met Township Education Officers and heads of schools in Yangon Division at Aung Kyaw Hall of Basic Education High School No 6 of Botahtaung Township today.

The deputy minister spoke of the need to sufficiently provide school buildings, repair class rooms, provide school equipment and make available text books. He also called for cleaning and greening of school environs and uplifting education standard because the basic education schools were reopened beginning 1 June.

(16) Int'l Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies official meets MRCS President

YANGON, 6 June - Under Secretary-General Ms Margareta Wahlstrom of International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies based in Geneva met President of Myanmar Red Cross Society Dr Kyaw Win and EC members at MRCS building on Strand Road this afternoon.

Ms Margareta Wahlstrom visited basic first aid course opened at MRCS and she was conducted round it by President of MRCS Dr Kyaw Win and officials. Under Secretary-General Ms Margareta Wahlstrom arrived here this morning.

(17) Children of staff of Hinthada District GAD

YANGON, 5 June - A ceremony to provide cash assistance to children of staff of Hinthada District General Administration Department was held at the department in Hinthada this morning.

Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Win Htain and District Commissioner U Kyaw San made speeches.

Lt-Col Win Htain and officials then presented provision and cash assistance to service personnel and exercise books for their children.

Branch clerk U Hla Thin spoke words of thanks.

Cash assistance for personnel and their children amounted to K 122,994.

(18) 448 members resign from Latpadan Township NLD

YANGON, 5 June - A ceremony to present 448 resignations of members of Latpadan Township National League for Democracy, Bago Division, was held at Latpadan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office at 11 am on 3 June 1999.

Four hundred and forty-eight members of Latpadan Township NLD notified the office of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD. On 3 June 1999, member of Township NLD Executive Committee U Win Kyaing explained the reason and handed over the letters of resignation to Secretary of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Naing Win Zaw.

(19) Over 48,000 eligible voters of Tatkon submit declarations expressing no confidence in NLD representative-elect U Wan Maung

YANGON, 5 June - Over 48,000 eligible voters of Tatkon Township Constituency-l submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Wan Maung who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Tatkon Township Constituency-l and no support for him at the rallies held in Shadaw, Dahatgon, Thanbayagon and Tatshein village-tracts on 15 May morning. A total of 8,200 local people of three wards and six village-tracts, rallied at Shadaw Village.

Tailoring entrepreneur U Aye Pyaurig of Myawady Ward, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U Wan Maung of National League for Democracy and no support for him. Then, farmer U Pu She of Shadaw Village presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Wan Maung and no support for him signed by 19,567 eligible voters to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Sein Hla.

Similarly, 7,400 local people of nine village-tracts attended the rally at Dahatgon Village. Farmer U Maung Ko of Kyaychaung Village expressed no confidence in U Wan Maung and no support for him. Farmer U Thein Hsaung of Dahatgon Village presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Wan Maung and no support for him signed by 13,811 eligible voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Immigration Officer U Myo Chit.

Likewise, 7,122 local people of seven village-tracts attended the rally at Thanbayagon Village. Farmer U Kyaw Win Sein of Thanbayagon Village expressed no confidence in U Wan Maung and no support for him. Farmer U Aung Maung of Dahatgon Village presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Wan Maung and no support for him signed by 8,719 eligible voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Thein Oo.
