YANGON, 4 June - Chairman of the State Peace and Development, Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe met senior police officers of Myanmar Police Force at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Home Affairs this morning and gave guidance on tasks to be done.
First, Minister Col Tin Hlaing reported on matters relating to the five principal tasks of the Myanmar Police Force.
Director-General of MPF Police Maj-Gen Soe Win reported on tasks being implemented by MPF.
Then, Director (International Relations) of Office of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control and Narcotic Drugs Eradication Department Police Col Kham Aung reported on control of narcotic drugs including stimulant tablets.
Deputy Director-General of MPF Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun reported on situation of crime control the nationwide yearly and efforts being made for reducing crime rate. In giving guidance on the work to be carried on in connection with the presentations, Senior General Than Shwe said out of the main duties of the MPF, the first duty is to ensure the rule of law and order. In other words, he said, MPF is to enable the people to earn their living freely in peace of mind under the protection of law.
Senior General Than Shwe said the main duty of the MPF leadership is to build up the MPF to become a force on which the nation can rely. The central level leadership, he said, has to lay down the guiding policies and draft the plan in order to implement those policies. Moreover, he said, the central level is to provide supervision to ensure there is success in the plan implemented by the State/Division, district and township levels, and remedying weaknesses, consolidating the strengths and fulfilling requirements.
In conclusion, Senior General Than Shwe called on all the responsible personnel in the MPF leadership to strive for turning MPF into a fully capable and dignified one which wins the respect of the people. The meeting ended later in the morning.

(2) Means sought to develop Myanmar Airways International
YANGON, 4 June - A meeting was held at the Ministry of Transport this afternoon to coordinate progress of Myanmar Airways International, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
First, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe explained the establishment of MAI, staff strength, situation of its current operations, arrangements to continue its Yangon-Kuala Lumpur run and plans to develop MAI.
Participants then discussed means to promote MAI.
The Secretary-1 gave suggestions.

(4) Plans coordinated for reclamation of vacant, virgin and fallow lands in Mon and Kayin States
YANGON, 4 June - A coordination meeting on reclamation of vacant, virgin and fallow lands in Mon and Kayin States was held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation this morning, addressed by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
The Secretary-2 said national entrepreneurs are conducting farming on thousands of acres in Ayeyawady, Yangon, Magway and Taninthayi Divisions; some of the local companies are taming thousands of acres in Bago Division, Shan State and Kachin State to set up farms; and there are vast areas of vacant, virgin and fallow lands in Mon and Kayin States.
Though there was the danger of insurgency in the past, peace and stability has be maintained in the states. The meeting was held to know the requirements in extending agriculture in the regions which will benefit national entrepreneurs and the local people.
Making a speech, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin said there are 467,000 acres of vacant, virgin and fallow lands in Mon State and 253,000 acres in Kayin State. National entrepreneurs should study the regions were land is suitable to grow perennial as well as seasonal crops.

(6) K 7·1m presented to in-service Tatmadaw members who sacrificed limbs
YANGON, 4 June - Thanmyanthu Economic Group and well-wishers presented assistance to in-service Tatmadaw members who had sacrificed their limbs for national cause this afternoon at the City Hall attended by Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-2 said multicolor insurgents appeared in Myanmar due to the instigations of colonialists who had enslaved the nation. The nation lagged behind development as the national development tasks could not be implemented due to insurgency.
Arrangements are being made to invest a 200,000-Kyat share each for 113 Tatmadaw members who had sacrificed two legs or two arms or two eyes at Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited and a 100,000 kyat share each for 385 Tatmadaw members who had sacrificed a leg or an arm or an eye for their long-term benefit. Long-term assistance has been rendered to 498 disabled Tatmadaw members to date.
Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint spoke words of thanks, elaborating on the Tatmadaw members' sacrifices in safeguarding the independence, sovereignty and the people's lives and ensuring national peace and stability.
Well-wishers then made donations for the disabled Tatmadaw members.

YANGON, 4 June - The Ministry of Industry-2 held its first four-monthly meeting at the ministry this afternoon.
Present on the occasion were Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin Deputy Minister U Thein Tun, directors-general and managing directors of department and enterprises, factory managers and officials.
Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin made a speech.
Then, Deputy Minister U Thein Tun discussed progress and shortcomings in production.

(13) Over 45,000 eligible voters of Yamethin submit declarations expressing no confidence in NLD representative-elect U Maung Maung Than
YANGON, 4 June - Over 45,000 eligible voters of Yamethin Township Constituency-2, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Maung Maung Than who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Yamethin Township Constituency-2 and no support for him at the rallies held in Katin, Ywadanthegyun and Myohla village-tracts on 11 May morning.
A total of 12,984 local people of two wards and nine village-tracts rallied at Katin Village-tract of the township.
Farmer U Kyaw Nyunt of Ohnthegwe Village, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U Maung Maung Than of National League for Democracy and no support for him. Then, farmer U Tin Hsaung presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Maung Maung Than and no support for him signed by 14,989 eligible voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Myo Myint Thein.
Similarly, 16,023 local people of 13 village-tracts attended the rally at Ywadanthegyun Village-tract.

(14) 48 members resign from Myittha Township NLD
YANGON, 4 June - Forty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division.
Forty-eight members of Myittha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 1 April 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(15) Heroin, arms seized in Tachilek
YANGON, 4 June - A combined team comprising Tatmadaw members of local battalion, members of intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Aik Shan at Lunkyaing Village in Haunglek Village-tract, Tachilek Township, Shan State (East), on 22 May.
Though the authorities could not find Aik Shan there, they nabbed Sai Nyunt, son of U Hu Min, Aik Lwan, son of U Lon Pin and Nan Aik, son of U Aik Yi of the village, together with 20 blocks of heroin weighing seven kilos, WY brand 279,000 stimulant tablets, ephedrine powder weighing 24 kilos, an American-made ·32 pistol and one magazine, a Germany-made 9mm pistol and one magazine, 750 rounds of ammunition of ·32 revolver, 136 rounds of ammunition of 9mm pistol, 280 rounds of ammunition of ·22 pistol, 850 rounds of ammunitions of ·25 revolver, two silencers and one American-made grenade without fuse.
Action is taken against them under being the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic
