(1) Secretary-1 to pay goodwill visit to PRC

YANGON, 4 June - At the invitation of Mr Luo Gan, State Councillor of the People's Republic of China, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council, will pay a goodwill visit to the People's Republic of China in the near future.

(2) Myanmar to host Third Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton Championship

YANGON, 3 June - A coordination meeting on hosting the Third Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton Championship 1999 in Yangon was held at the National Indoor Stadium-1 this afternoon, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said Myanmar at present is endeavoring with high momentum to promote the nation's sports standard, bringing out talented athletes, uplifting their morale and striving to acquire international experience and better techniques.

The nation is hosting international sports competitions with the aim of enabling Myanmar athletes to acquire world class experiences and advanced methods; and athletes should upgrade their perseverance, morale, sporting spirit and the will to uplift the nation's dignity through sports to realize the nation's aim.

In addition to hosting international sports competitions in the nation, Myanmar is also making arrangements for athletes to participate more in the international events abroad.  Myanmar athletes should try to gain new experiences and better techniques at the Third Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton Championship 1999.

(3) Secretary-1 inspects construction of Maha Thanti Thukha Buddha Sasana Building

YANGON, 3 June - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, together with officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, visited the construction site of Maha Thanti Thukha Buddha Sasana Building in Natchaung Ward, Tarmway Township, this afternoon.

The Secretary-1 inspected the construction works.

Officials reported on arrangements to decorate the building with Myanma arts and crafts and interior decoration works.

The Secretary-1 heard reports by Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and Chairman of Upathaka U Saw Myint on matters related to cash donations and expenses and progress of work in constructing the building.

(4) Secretary-1 meets artistes of Myanmar-Japan friendship cultural show

YANGON, 3 June - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met Myanmar artistes led by Chairman of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon U Sein Tin, who had staged variety dances and anyeints at Myanmar-Japan friendship cultural show in Japan, at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road this evening.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Head of the Office of Strategic Studies and Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads and officials. Chairman of MMPA U Sein Tin, Bogale U Tint Aung and Gitalulin U Ko Ko and artistes recounted their experience of the cultural show and the applause of the audience.

The Secretary-l said that Myanmar-Japan friendship cultural show is a successful one, and expressed his pleasure for the performance of artistes.

Then, the artistes paid respects to the Secretary-1 in accord with Myanmar tradition.

(5) Mars Mosquito Coil Factory opened

YANGON, 3 June - Mars Mosquito Coil Factory being run by Myanmar Agriculture Service and Mars International Co Ltd on mutual benefit was opened on No 3 Highway in Mingaladon Township this afternoon.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin made a speech on the occasion, and Managing Director of Sumitomo Corporation Mr Naoki Kuroda extended greetings.

On the occasion, officials donated mosquito coils to No S Basic Education Middle School and No 14 Basic Education Primary School in Mingaladon Township through principals.  Mr Naoki Kuroda, presented gifts to the Secretary-2, ministers and guests.

MAS Managing Director U Tun Than and officials formally opened the factory.

(6) Minister for Industry-1 meets company officials

YANGON, 3 June - Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met Deputy Manager Mr Li Shu Yan of Yangon Office of China Metallurgical Construction (Group) Corporation and party who called at his office at 4 pm.

He also received U Maung Maung Thaung of Yangon Office of Eva Company Ltd and party at his office at 4.30 pm.

They discussed building of a paper mill and gas and umbrella factories.

Also present were heads of department under the ministry.

(7) Myanmar delegation attends World Health Conference

YANGON, 3 June - The Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein attended the 52nd World Health Conference held in Geneva from 17 to 25 May.

Minister of Health of Portugal Mrs Moria de Belem Roseira acted as chairperson at the conference.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein delivered an address.

In his address, he spoke of controlling malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS and eradicating smoking and took part in ministerial talks on making investments for hospitals and raising funds for health.

During his trip, the minister held talks with his counterpart of Singapore Mr Yeo Cheow Tong and met nurses working at Singapore hospitals under the bilateral cooperation programmes.

In Switzerland, he met WHO Director-General Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director for AIDS Control Dr Piot, health delegation leader of Japan and social organization MSF of Switzerland.

On his way back home after the conference, he met members of the House of Councillors (the Upper House) of Japan Mr Hideo Watanabe and Mr Tat Suo Ozawa, Minister for Health of Japan Mr Miyashita Sobei, Chairman of JICA Mr Fujita and officials of Japanese NGOs Basic Human Needs (BHN), Asia Medical Doctors Association (AMDA), Japanese Children for Vaccine (JCV), Japanese Cleft Palate Foundation and Myanmar Association ( Japan).

They discussed bilateral cooperation in health.  He studied Dioyukai Medical Centre in Nagoya and Okayama National Hospital and Saiseekai Hospital in Okayama.  The delegation arrived back here on 2 June.

(8) Medicines donated to medical units

YANGON, 3 June - A ceremony to donate medicines worth K 267,700 to medical units by Managing Director U Maung Maung Gyi of Khantha Company was held at Defence Services Medical Research and Development Committee Office at 10 am today.

Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo and Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han accepted the donation and presented certificate of honour to the well-wisher.

(9) Deputy PM meets Resource Strategies (Asia) Chairman

YANGON, 3 June - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin met Chairman Mr David Melzer OBE and party of Resource Strategies (Asia) Ltd of Britain at his office at 3.30 pm today.

Deputy Minister for Energy U Tin Tun and officials of the Government Office and MIC Office were also present. They discussed opportunities in exploration of oil and gas in Myanmar.

(10) Commerce Minister meets foreign businessmen

YANGON, 3 June - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than met Chairman Mr G L Goenka of Indo-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industries of India and party who called at his office this afternoon.

The minister also received Dato Eskay Shazryl and party of Konsep Rimba Sdn-Bhd of Malaysia at 2pm today at the same venue.

Also present were Deputy Minister Commodore Myo Tint and officials.

(11) Minister meets Acting MD of Shandong Weichai Import & Export Corporation

YANGON, 3 June - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Acting Managing Director Mr Huang Wensheng of Shandong Weichai Import & Export Corporation of the People's Republic of China and party who called at his office this afternoon.

They discussed cooperation in industries on mutual basis.  Also present were Deputy Minister U Thein Tun and officials.

(12) Minister for Cooperatives inspects fertilizer plant

YANGON, 3 June - Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San attended the Shwehtidaw-Hoisting Ceremony of Shwebonthamuni Pagoda built by members of the board of directors and staff families of Htet Arkar Kyaw Cooperative Syndicate Ltd in the compound of Shwemyayhsi Fertilizer Plant, four miles away from Toungoo, Bago Division, yesterday morning.

The minister hoisted tiers of the Shwehtidaw, Hngetmyatnadaw and Seinphudaw atop the pagoda.

After the ceremony the minister visited the plant. Officials explained matters related to the plant.

Then, the minister inspected the dynamic blender innovated by engineers of Cottage Industry Department. Then, the minister toured the plant and left instructions on the works.

(13) Heroin seized in Nawnhkio

YANGON, 3 June - A combined team comprising members of regional intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, while searching cars at the check point in Nawnhkio, Shan State (North), on 20 May, seized heroin weighing 0.077 kilo hidden in the soap boxes carried by Ma Lwan Noe, daughter of U In Su Shaung, and Ma Bauk Nang, daughter of U Naw Hsaing, of Ward-5, Region 9, Lashio, on board Hilux car (4Ka/4139) driven by Han Win of Nangkham-Mann Vehicle Association.
Nawnhkio Police Station has taken action against the two according to law.

(14) Over 73,000 eligible voters of Meiktila submit declarations expressing no confidence in NLD representative-elect Dr Thein Lwin

YANGON, 1 June - Over 73,000 eligible voters of Meiktila Township Constituency-2 of Mandalay Division, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in Dr Thein Lwin who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Meiktila Township Constituency-2 and no support for him at the rallies held at Segon, Tibingon, Theingon and Yayway villages in the township on 10 May morning.

A total of 11,446 eligible voters of 11 village-tracts and five wards rallied at Segon Village in Myinkan Village-tract of the township.

Merchant U Pya of Sinwalwe Village, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in Dr Thein Lwin who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy and no support for him. Afterwards, Voter U Kyaw Haling, of Mwe Village, on behalf of the voters, presented declarations expressing no confidence in Dr Thein Lwin and no support for him signed by 38,224 eligible voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Tin Htay.

Similarly, over 4,850 local people of five village-tracts attended the rally at Theingon Village in Myaukle Village-tract.  Retired personnel of the textile factory U Than Shwe of Thayetpin Village, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in Dr Thein Lwin of National League for Democracy and no support for him. U Tun Kyi of Myaukle Village, on behalf of the voters, presented declarations expressing no confidence in Dr Thein Lwin and no support for him signed by 8.723 commission U Tin Hlaing.  Similarly, over 10,000 local people of six village-tracts attended the rally at Tibingon Village in Aleywa village-tract.

(15) 39 members resign from Kyaikto Township NLD

YANGON, 3 June - Thirty-nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kyaikto Township, Mon State.

Thirty-nine members of Kyaikto Township NLD, Mon State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyaikto Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 12 April 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(16) 19 members resign from Myaung Township NLD

YANGON, 3 June - Nineteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myaung Township, Sagaing Division.

Nineteen members of Myaung Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 30 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
