YANGON, 30 May - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Kyauktan Basic Education High School No 2 at 8.30 am today.
Then, officials of Public Works reported to the Secretary-1 on progress on construction of a two-storey building at the school Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Lu Maw on renovation and construction of basic education schools in the township, Headmistress Daw Aye Myat Oo on arrangements to open Multi Media Class Room at the school and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Ye Aung on arrangements for students to study higher learning.
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave necessary instructions.
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Minister U Than Aung signed in the visitors' Athawkarama Pariyatti Sarthintaik Agga Maha Pandita Sasanadhaja Shiriparawa Dhammacarira Bhaddanta Pannavamsa.
Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented offertories to Vice-Chairmen Sayadaw of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Bhaddanta Pannindabhivamsa and Bhaddanta Arsinnabhivamsa and members of the Sangha.
The Secretary-1 and party inspected construction work of Thathana Beikmamdawgyi in Kyauktan.
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party went to Myoma Basic Education Middle School in Kyauktan and inspected construction of new building donated by Shwethanlwin Co in the school.

(2) Secretary-2 attends conclusion of Ninth Summer Yamite and Pathan Special Course
YANGON, 30 May - The concluding ceremony of the Ninth Summer Yamite and Pathan Special Course was held at the three-storey Mahasandawwin Kyaungdawgyi of Insein Ywama Pariyatti Sarthintaik today, attended by Secretary-2 of the ate Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
The congregation received the Nine Precepts from Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara.
Course Instructor Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Tilokabhivamsa of Insein Ywama Pariyatti Sarthintaik spoke about opening of the Summer Yamite and Pathan Special Course, and convenience in opening the course due to the support and assistance provided by the State Peace and Development Council, departments and well-wishers.
Col Thaik Tun supplicated on religious matters.
Afterwards, Secretary-2 Lt Tin Oo and party presented offertories to the Sayadaws.
Lt-Gen Tin Oo formed a committee for building a new soonsarkyaung with Director-General of Prisons Department U Kyaw Tun as chairman and made arrangements for the funds needed for construction. It will cost about K 15 million.
Course Instructor Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Tilokabhivamsa presented certificates of honour to the departments and well-wishers who donated cash towards the funds for opening the course, and certificates to the trainees.
Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Mandalay Masoeyein Taikthit Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa delivered a sermon followed by sharing of merits.
About 900 trainees-monks, nuns and lay persons-from various parts of the country attended the one-month Ninth Summer Yamite and Pathan Special Course.

(3) Maha Thamaya Day observed at Kyaikkasan Pagoda
YANGON, 30 May - The Maha Thamaya Day was observed at Historic Kyaikkasan Pagoda in Thingangyun Township yesterday evening, attended by Chairman of Pagoda Board of Trustees Thihathudhama Manijotadhara (Hsinmin) U Tin Shwe and members, members of 14 Weyawutsa Associations of the pagoda and devotees.
In the morning, Dhamathara Mingun Hill Sayadaw delivered a sermon.
In the evening, flowers, lights and water were offered to the pagoda by the devotees and members of various religious associations of the pagoda by reciting the Maha Thamaya Sutta.
Then, Senior Nun Daw Obhasi explained the origin of the Maha Thamaya Day.

(4) Devotees, merry-makers pack pagodas, recreation centres
YANGON, 30 May - The devotees, members of the Sangha, merry-makers and people of-various townships visited pagodas, amusement parks and recreation centre in Yangon on Sunday, a public holiday.
Devotees and pilgrims including tourists donated flowers, water, lights and incense to the Buddha images at Shwedagon Pagoda and paid obeisance to the pagodas, kept Sabbath, told beads, practiced meditation and made donations at pagodas.
Pilgrims crowded Maha Wizaya, Sule, Botahtaung Kyaikdae-et, Thanlyin Kyaikkhauk, Kyauktan Yayle, Koehtatgyi, Chaukhtatgyi and Ngahtatgyi pagodas.
Merry-makers with their families visited Yangon Zoological Gardens, Hlawga Park, Happy World, Thakayta Amusement Park and Myakyuntha Park. Similarly, the people crowded department stores, plazas, markets and stores.

(5) Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs leaves for Malaysia
YANGON, 30 May - Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win left here by air for Malaysia this morning to attend the 13th Asia-Pacific Round-table Meeting to be held from 30 May to 2 June in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The deputy minister was seen off at Yangon International Airport by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador of Malaysia to Myanmar Dato Mohamad Bin Noh.
The Deputy Minister was accompanied by Head of Department of the Office of Strategic Studies Col Kyaw Thein of Ministry of Defence.

(6) Yangon Division starts Arbour Month activities
YANGON, 30 May - The opening ceremonies of Arbour Month activities in Yangon Division for 1999 were held in the districts and townships simultaneously at 7 am today.
Members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Fire Brigade and Red Cross, students, members of the Maternal and Child Welfare Association and people, totaling over 72,500, took part in the tree-planting activities at respective places.
The opening ceremony of the division level tree-planing activities was held on the plot at the foot of Kyaikkalei Pagoda in Mingaladon Township this morning.
Present on the occasion were Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, the division, district and township level officials, and over 2,000 people.

(7) Mon Literature Course concludes
YANGON, 30 May - A ceremony to mark conclusion of Mon Literature Course for 1999, sponsored by Mon Literature and Culture Committee (Yangon) was held at Mon Dhamayon on Shwedagon Pagoda Road, this afternoon.
Chairman of MLCC Naing Ngwe La made an opening speech. Chairman of Teaching Sub-Committee for Mon Literature Naing Tin Tun explained works of the teaching.
Naing Ngwe La then presented certificates to 165 trainees who had completed the course, followed by presentation of prizes to outstanding trainees by Naing Tin Tun.

YANGON 30 May - The Second Women's Affairs Cultural Course sponsored by Myanma Theravada Buddhism Missionary Central Board, All-Myanmar Buddhism Missionary Association and Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs (Cultural Group) concluded at Sasana Beikmandawgyi of All Myanmar Buddhism Missionary Association on Shwegondine Road this morning.
Head of Faculty of Patipatti of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University World Missionary Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Pannadipa gave counsel. Member of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Director of Social Welfare Department U Khin Aung, Chairman of Myanmar Theravada Buddhism Missionary Central Board U Kyi Nyunt and Chairman of All Myanmar Buddhism Missionary Association U San Tun made speeches.
Leader of Cultural Group of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Daw Thein Thein Nyunt reported on the course.
Gifts were presented to course instructors and certificates to trainees.

(9) Chinese writers delegation arrives
YANGON, 30 May - The five-member Chinese writers delegation led by member of the Panel of Patron of Writer Association of People's Republic of China Mr Shu Peide arrived here by air this afternoon.
The Chinese writers delegation was welcomed at Yangon Intentional Airport by Chairman of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association U Kyaw Aung (Kyaw Aung), Vice-Chairman U Than Maung, Secretary U Hla Tun (Hla Tun - Twantay), Treasure U Saw Myint (Maung Saw Myint), member U Win Pe (Monywa Win Pe), First Secretary (Culture) of Chinese Embassy Ms Ren Xiu Zhi and embassy staff and officials.
The delegation visited the Shwedagon Pagoda in the evening.
The Chinese writers delegation will stay here for 10 days to visit Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, Popa, PyinOoLwin and Bago.
The delegation includes Chairman of Writers Association in Gansu Province Mr Wang Wang Ken, Director of Foreign Relation Section of Writers Association of People's Republic of China Mr Chen Xiru arid Liaison Officer of Foreign Relation Section of Writers Association of People's Republic of China Ms Wansy Li.

(10) Shady and flowery trees planted on either side of roads
YANGON, 30 May - Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa attended trees planting ceremony held at Teak Plantation No 6 in North Okkalapa Township and on the either side of Okkala Road and Mindhamma Road this morning.
Also present on the occasion were Joint-Secretary of YCDC U Kyi Win, committee member U Aung Soe, heads of department, service personnel, chairmen of North Okkalapa, Mayangon and Insein Township Peace and Development Councils, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and local people totaling over l 500.
About 3,000 shady and flowery trees were planted at along the roads and designated places.
Similarly, officials and service personnel planted 2,000 trees at Central Store Depot in Ywathagyi.

(11) Summer basic band troupe course concludes
YANGON, 30 May - Summer basic band troupe course of Dagon Myothit (North) concluded at Township Gymnasium yesterday morning.
Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Thein Tun made a speech.
Officials presented certificates to trainees and Township band troupe performed the guests. Next, member of District Peace and Development Council U Thein Swe presented gifts to instructors.
Also present on the occasion were Secretary of Township Union Solidarity and Development Association U Soe Win, township level officials, teachers, Chairmen of Ward Peace and Development Councils and guests.

(12) Eligible voters submit declarations expressing no confidence in NLD representatives-elect U Kyaw of Pyinmana and U Tin Htut Oo of Lewe
YANGON, 30 May - Ceremonies to submit declarations expressing no confidence in two representatives-elect of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Pyinmana Township and Lewe Township and no support for them at the rallies held at two venues of respective townships on 1 May evening.
Over 55,000 eligible voters of Pyinmana Township Constituency-2 of Mandalay Division, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Kyaw who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Pyinmana Township Constituency-2 and no support for him at the rallies held at Kyee-in and Maubin villages on 1 May.
A total of 11,295 local people of eight villages and two wards rallied at Kyee-in Village in Pyinmana on I May evening. Farmer U Aye Ngwe of Kyee-in Village, on behalf at the voters, expressed declarations expressing no confidence in U Kyaw of National League for Democracy. Then, farmer U Win Maung of Kyee-in Village, on behalf of the voters, presented declarations of no confidence in U Kyaw and no support for him signed by 28,747 eligible voters to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Saw Aung.
Similarly, 13,742 local people of 12 villages attended the rally at Maubin Village in the evening.

(13) 221 members resign from South Okkalapa Township NLD
YANGON, 30 May - A total of 221 members of National League for Democracy of South Okkalapa Township, Yangon Division, collectively resigned by sending letters of resignation to the party concerned as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
A ceremony to collectively present the resignations to South Okkalapa Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission was held at No 1 Basic Education High School of the township on 28 May 1999.
U Kyi, on behalf of the party members, explained the reason and presented the
resignations to Chairman U May Maung of Township Multiparty Democracy General
