(1)  Religious titles presented to Sayadaws successful in 51st Tipitakadhara Selection Examination

YANGON, 29 May - A ceremony to honour the 51st Tipitakadhara and present certificates was held at Maha Pasana Cave, Kaba Aye, today, and Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San attended it and the General presented the Abhidhamma Kovida title and certificate to Ashin Sundara of Sunlungu Vipassana Kyaungtaik, Thingangyun Township.

Officials of the departments under the Ministry of Religious Affairs ushered the Sayadaws to their seats in the Maha Pasana Caves.

Ovadacariya of Tipitakadhara Selection Committee Agga Maha Pandita Sagaing Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sajjanabhivamsa invested the congregation with the Nine Precepts.

(2)  Secretary-1 attends ceremony for enshrinement of pagoda built to likeness of Htidaw of Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 29 May - A ceremony to enshrine relics in the pagoda built to the likeness of Htidaw of the Shwedagon was held at the pagoda on the platform of Shwedagon Pagoda at 6.30 am today, attended by Patron of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Staff Officer of Yangon Division Religious Affairs Department U San Thin Hlaing acted as master of ceremonies.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party and well wishers received the Nine Precepts from the State Ovadacariya Thirimanda Sankyaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Rajindabhivamsa.

Members of the Sangha recited the Parittas.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented relics to Thirimanda Sankyaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Rajindabhivamsa and Aungmyay Bonsankyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannindabhivamsa for Shwedagon's Htidaw Design Pagoda.

The Secretary-1 and party presented offertories to the Sayadaws.

Vice-Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Aungmyay Bonsankyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannindabhivamsa delivered a sermon.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party and well-wishers shared the merits for their good deeds.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt conveyed the relics to the reliquary.

(3)  Secretary-2 meets officials of Myanma Five Star Line

YANGON, 29 May - Chairman of Central Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Secure and Smooth Transport Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo met officials and service personnel of Myanma Five Star Line for greening of wharves and port area at the hall of Thakayta Wharf of MFSL this morning.

Managing Director of MFSL U Khin Maung Kyi reported on brief history of MFSL, its objectives, targets, tasks, strength of service personnel, coastal liners, multipurpose ship, ocean-going ships, passengers and freight transport, construction of wharves and maintenance, implementation of the project and construction of new Thakayta Wharf with audiovisual aids.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on security, cleanliness and greening of wharves and port, work-site safety, minimizing wastage and loss, arrangements for convenience of passengers, systematic storage of containers, security of warehouses and cooperation.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected the wharf.

Thakayta Wharf of international standard including 220x19.5 metres wharf, resting house for passengers, warehouse and container yard was built on 22.794 acres of land.

Two 100-metre ocean-going ships can load or unload at the wharf. Container yard which can store 1,000 containers was also built and the wharf is now in operation.

(4)  Medicine and cash donated to Home for the Aged

YANGON, 29 May - A ceremony to donate medicine and cash for elderly persons at Hninzigon Home for the Aged by Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs, and Myanmar Medical Association (Women Chapter) was held at the home for the aged this afternoon.

It was attended by Vice-Chairperson of MNWCWA Professor Daw May May Yi, Committee Member Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Secretary Director-General of Social Welfare Department Col Sit Myaing, Secretary-General of MMA Professor S Kyaw Hla, Chairperson of MMA (Women Chapter) Dr Daw Yi Yi Hla and specialists, members of Board of Trustees of Hninzigon Home for the Aged and well-wishers.

Chairman of Board of Trustees of Hninzigon Home for the Aged U Maung Tin and Vice-Chairperson of MNWCWA Professor Daw May May Yi reported on the Home for the Aged and the purpose of the donations.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented K 20,000 donated by MNWCWA and indigenous medicines to Chairman U Maung Tin.

Afterwards, U Maung Tin accepted K 680,000 and four sewing machines donated by well-wishers.

Specialists and doctors of MMA (Women Chapter) gave treatment to the elderly persons at the home for the aged.

(5)  Minister meets Bangladesh pilgrim delegation

YANGON, 29 May - Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa met pilgrim delegation led by U Ba Tun of Bangladesh, which arrived recently here to pay obeisance to the ancient pagodas in Myanmar under the arrangement of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Myanmar Embassy in Bangladesh, who called at Mogok Soon-sarh-saung in Kaba Aye this evening.

The minister extended greetings to them.

Afterwards, the minister presented Buddha images and religious books to the delegation members. The leader of the delegation expressed words of thanks.

(6)  Workshop on implementation of four tasks of general admin

YANGON, 29 May - Workshop 1/99 on implementation of four tasks of Division, District and Township General Administration Department was opened at Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Office on 21 May, with an address by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann.

(7)  Gifts for 51 primary schools

YANGON, 29 May - A total of 10,000 exercise books were donated to 51 basic education primary schools under No 3 Basic Education Department by Mr Iichi Rowa, a veteran, of Japan.

The donation ceremony was held at No 6 Basic Education High School, Botahtaung, this morning, attended by Yangon Division Education Officer (Retd) U Aung Tin, on behalf of the well-wisher, Director-General of No 3 BED Col Thein Aung and directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, staff officers and township education officers.

Col Thein Aung made a speech and then accepted the donation made by U Aung Tin, on behalf of the donor.

(8)  35 members resign from Myeik Township NLD

YANGON, 29 May - Thirty-five members resigned from National League for Democracy of Myeik Township, Tanintharyi Division.

Thirty-five members of Myeik Township NLD, Tanintharyi Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myeik Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 2 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  15 members resign from Taungdwingyi Township NLD

YANGON, 29 May - Fifteen members resigned from National League for Democracy of Taungdwingyi Township, Magway Division.

Six members of Taungdwingyi Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Taungdwingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 22 February 1999 and another three and six totaling 15 followed suit on 1 April 1999 and 27 April 1999 respectively as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  Shooting starts for teleplay on Theikpan Maung Wa

YANGON, 29 May - A ceremony to launch shooting of teleplay in commemoration of writer Theikpan Maung Wa organized by Committee for Holding the Centenary in of writer Theikpan Maung Wa (1899-1999) and Mayangon Township Writers and Journalists Association was held at the National Museum on Pyay Road this morning.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Director-General U Myint Thein Swe of Department of Cultural Institute, Deputy Director-General U Khin Maung Tin and officials, the committee members, video director Aung Soe Oo and artistes and guests.

Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt made an opening speech and director Aung Soe Oo explained shooting the play.

The crab merchants of Seikkan Township donated K 100,000 for the teleplay to Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt.

The artistes Min Khit, Lin Zarni Zaw, Thanda Hlaing, Lay Lay Wah, M Li Li Hsan, Smile, Einchit, Ekari Phyo, Su Sanda Aung, Academy Cho Pyone, Academy Arnt Kyaw and others will participate in the play titled 'See-sein'.

(11)  Over 30,000 eligible voters of Kyaikmaraw submit declarations expressing no confidence in NLD representative-elect U Myint Thein

YANGON, 29 May - Over 30,000 eligible voters of Kyaikmaraw Township Constituency-1 of Mon State, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Myint Thein who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy at the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Kyaikmaraw Township Constituency-1 and no support for him at the rally held at Myoma region on 27 April.

Over 21,500 local people of 24 villages and wards attended the rally.

U Tin Aye of Shinsawpu Ward, on behalf of the voters, expressed declarations on no confidence in representative elect U Myint Thein of National League for Democracy.

Then, U Myo Tint of Kyaikmaraw Township, presented declarations of no confidence in U Myint Thein and no support for him signed by 30,439 eligible voters of 24 villages and wards to member of Township Multi-party Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Chit Lwin.

Out of 39,948 eligible voters of Kyaikmaraw Township Constituency-1 of Mon State, 10,576 or 26.47 per cent voted for U Myint Thein of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election. The number of voters who presented signed declarations of no confidence in U Myint Thein and no support for him totaled 30.439 or 76.19 per cent.

(12)  Track and field selection trials held for XX SEA Games

YANGON, 29 May - Track and field selection trials sponsored by Myanmar Track and Field Federation for XX SEA Games took place at Aung San Stadium this morning.

The final matches of men's 20 kilometer walk, men's-women's 10,000 metre race, men's-women's 400 metre race, men's pole vault and other events were held.

Thein Win (a) Gopal of Agriculture and Irrigation finished in men's 10,000 race with 30 minute 02.3 second breaking the SEA record.

(13)  Provost Marshal's Shield Volleyball Tournament continues

YANGON, 29 May - The 19th Provost Marshal's Shield Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Volleyball Tournament continued at Hline Gymnasium this morning.

No 363 Provost Company beat No 1 Provost Company (Air) 2-0 and No 1 Provost Company beat Provost Crime Prevention Supporting Unit 2-0 in women's event.

In men's event, No 868 Provost Company beat No 7 Provost Company 3-0; No 2 Provost Company beat No 9 Provost Company 3-0; No 969 Provost Company beat No 5 Provost Company 3-0; No 4 Provost Company beat Central Provost Unit 3-0 and No 161 Provost Company beat No 767 Provost Company 3-0.

The tournament continues tomorrow.

(14)  30th ISD Boxing Championship for 1999 concludes

YANGON, 29 May - Secretary of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik attended the final match of the 30th Inter-States/Division Boxing Championship for 1999 which took place at Aung San Gymnasium yesterday evening.

After the final match, officials presented prizes to the winners.

Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Boxing Federation Deputy Director-General of SPED Lt-Col Thein Aung presented best boxer award to Kyaw Kyaw Latt of Yangon in under-18 junior flyweight Division, and Aung Zaw Htwe of Shan State (South) in senior flyweight Division.

Then, Col Thaung Htaik presented championship shields for junior division (under 28), A-class Division and overall division.
