(1)  Secretary-1 meets President of Halim Mazmin Co

YANGON, 28 May - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received President of Halim Mazmin Co Dato Halim of Malaysia and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 7:30 am today.

Also present together with the Secretary-1 were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(2)  Minister meets President of Kunming Xing Zhi Science & Trade Development Corporation

YANGON, 28 May - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met President of Kunming Xing Zhi Science & Trade Development Corporation of People's Republic of China Mr Gao Xiang Qian and party who called at his office at 3 pm today.

President of Hainan Import & Export Co Ltd Mr Zhang Sheng Can and party called on Minister U Aung Thaung at his office at 5:30 pm today. Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, director-generals and managing directors of the Department and lndustries.

(3)  Minister for Foreign Affairs leaves for ROK

YANGON, 28 May - At the invitation of Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Republic of Korea Mr Hong Soon Young, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung left here by air this evening for Korea to pay a goodwill visit there.

The Minister was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, officials of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador of Republic of Korea Mr Chung Jung-Gum and embassy staff and Charge d'Affairs ai of Japanese Embassy Mr Yoshihiko Moto.

After the goodwill visit to Korea, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung will attend the Fifth International Conference on Asia's Future to be held in Tokyo sponsored by Nilhon Keizai Shimbun of Japan in Tokyo.

(4)  U Phone Myint awarded Order of the Diplomatic Service Merit of ROK

YANGON, 28 May - A title awarding ceremony to U Phone Myint, former Myanmar Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Korea, by the Government of the Republic of Korea, in recognition of his contribution to strengthening the friendly relations between ROK and Myanmar during his tenure in Korea, was held at the ROK Embassy in Yangon this morning.

At the ceremony, Ambassador of ROK Mr Chung Jung-Gum, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Korea, presented the Order of the Diplomatic Service Merit of the Republic of Korea to U Phone Myint.

(5)  Nine repaved streets put back into use in Mayangon Township

YANGON, 28 May - Nine streets and five lanes repaved on self reliance basics were put back into use in the Bayintnaung brokerages and the haulage truck terminal area in Mayangon Township this morning.

Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay and Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa formally opened the streets.

(6)  Minister for Cooperatives meets industrialists

YANGON, 28 May - Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San sought means for advancement of industries at his meeting with entrepreneurs of 13 townships in Yangon West Industrial Zone this afternoon at the ministry.

U Aung San, who is also the member of Myanma Industrial Development Committee, and the In-charge of the industrial zone, said industrial advancement is needed for modernization and progress of the nation.

The government is providing assistance in every sector for national industrial promotion, establishing industrial zones nation wide. The five-year national economic plan was laid down and is being implemented to ensure progress in all areas for Myanmar to get breast with her neighbors.

(7)  Minister donates computer to school

YANGON, 28 May - A ceremony to present a computer donated by Member of Central Executive Committee of Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing to Basic Education High School of Paungtale in Pyay Township was held at the school yesterday.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Pyay Township Peace and Development Council U Kyaw Khaing Soe, the Headmaster and teachers, executives of Pyay District and Township USDAs, towns elders and students.

U Kyaw Khaing Soe, on behalf of the Minister for Home Affairs, presented a computer to Headmaster U Nyan Tun. USDA EC member of Pyay District U Thein Zaw also presented books on guidance given by the Head of State for school library to the headmaster who spoke words of thanks.

(8)  Sasana Arzanis to be honoured on 29 May

YANGON, 28 May - A ceremony to honour members of the Sangha who passed the 51st Tipidakadhara Selection Examination organized by Religious Affairs Department will be held in Maha Pasana Cave on Thiri Mingala Kaba Aye Hill at 1 pm on 29 May, Full-moon Day of Nayon.

The ceremony will be attended by members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Sayadaws, members of the State Peace and Development Council, departmental officials and guests.

(9)  UNICEF gifts for MRTV

YANGON, 28 May - UNICEF presented equipment for airing children's programmes to Myanma Radio and TV this afternoon at MRTV.

Chief of Programme Communication and Information Section of UNICEF Mr Peter F Chen handed over the gifts to Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein.

Mr Chen also explained the purpose of the donation. Brig-Gen Aung Thein spoke words of thanks, saying MRTV will telecast better children's programmes in the future.

(10)  Engg On-job Training Course No 1/99 concludes

YANGON, 28 May - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt attended the concluding ceremony of Sub Assistant Engineer On-job Training Course No 1/99 of Development Affairs Department at the Training School of DAD in Ward 51, Dagon Myothit (North) this evening.

Col Myo Myint presented certificates to the trainees.

The four-week SAE On-job Training Course was attended by 101 AGTI diploma holder service personnel who will be assigned at Township Development Affairs Committees.

(11)  Pakistani study delegation concludes visit

YANGON, 28 May - Brig Noor Ud Din Ahmed of Pakistan National Defence College of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and study delegation, accompanied by Head of Administration and Commerce Department of National Defence College, visited the Shwedagon Pagoda this morning.

Brig Noor Ud Din Ahmed signed in the visitor's book at the pagoda and made a cash donation to the pagoda funds.

They proceeded to National Museum of Department of Cultural Institute on Pyay Road at 9.45 am and they were welcomed by Director (Museum) Daw Nu Mya Zan, Director (Admin) U Thaung Win and officials who conducted the delegation round the museum.

The delegation went to Myanma Gems Museum of Myanma Gems Enterprise on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 10.45 am.

Curator U Zaw Win Naing and Adviser U Thein Lwin conducted them round the Gems Museum.

Brig Noor Ud Din Ahmed and party then visited King Zafar Shah's Tomb on Zizawa Street at 12.45 pm.

Brig Noor Ud Din Ahmed and party left here by air this evening.

They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Commandant of National Defence College Maj-Gen San Aung and Tatmadaw officers.

(12)  Yangon Division team wins championship trophy

YANGON, 28 May - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win attended prize presentation ceremony of 21st Inter-State/Division Team Golf Championship at Yangon Golf Club in Danyingon this evening.

Present on the occasion were President of Myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, Secretary-General of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik and officials and guests.

Director-General Col Thaung Htaik of SPED presented second prize to Bago in team scratch event and President of MGF Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, first prize to Yangon in team scratch event.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win presented championship trophy to Yangon Division team.

Team captain Col Tun Yi of Yangon Division team spoke words of thanks.

(13)  Investment opportunities in Indonesia for Myanmar entrepreneurs discussed

YANGON, 28 May - A seminar on the investment opportunities in Indonesia for Myanmar entrepreneurs was held at Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

Present at the seminar were the Ambassador of Indonesia to Myanmar and embassy staff, Vice-President of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and EC members, officials of Indonesian CCI who attended the ASEAN-Chambers of Commerce and Industry 56th Council Meeting, members of economic delegation, Myanmar entrepreneurs and guests.

Ambassador of Indonesia to Myanmar Maj-Gen (Police) A Poerwanto Lenggono said during the last three years, Indonesian companies arrived Myanmar to make investment in various sectors, and at present, Indonesia is the sixth largest investing country in Myanmar with a total investment of 237.42 million dollars.

Vice-Chairman of the Indonesian CCI Mr Iman Taufik spoke about the current political, economic and social situation in Indonesia and opportunities there for Myanmar entrepreneurs.

Later, those present discussed investment opportunities, export and import, and trading.

(14)  Briefing held on banking matters

YANGON, 28 May - Euro Briefing jointly sponsored by the Central Bank of Myanmar of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue and Deutche Bank AG of Germany was held in the meeting hall of the Central Bank of Myanmar today.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry, General Manager Mr A Hoffmann of Deutche Bank AG and officials, those of the State and private-owned banks and guests.

(15)  Deputy Minister meets Thai officials

YANGON, 28 May - Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt met with Director General of Fine Arts Department of Thailand Mr Nikom Musigakama and party at his office this afternoon.

The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak.

They discussed further extension of bilateral cultural cooperation.

Also present at the call were Director-General of Department of Cultural Institute U Myint Thein Swe, Director-General of Archaeology Department U Nyunt Han, Deputy Director-General of Fine Arts Department U Ba Hsan and officials.

(16)  Law Refresher Course concludes

YANGON, 28 May - Refresher Course 13 for Law Officers of the Attorney-General's Office concluded this morning.

Deputy Attorney-General U Khin Maung Aye gave a speech.

Gifts were presented to trainees who were outstanding in the course.

The ceremony at the A-G's Office was also attended by Director-General Dr Tun Shin and officials.

(17)  49 members resign from Tatkon Township NLD

YANGON, 28 May - Forty-nine members resigned from National League for Democracy of Tatkon Township, Mandalay Division.

Forty-eight members of Tatkon Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Tatkon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 22 March 1999 and one followed suit on 28 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
