(1) Secretary-1 delivers opening address at ASEAN 56th Council Meeting

YANGON, 27 May - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered the opening address at the ASEAN-Chamber of Commerce and Industry 56th Council Meeting hosted by the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry at Sedona Hotel here this morning.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr Suthad Setboonsarng, President of ASEAN-CCI Tan Sri Dato Tajudin Ramli, former Secretary-General of ASEAN Director of State-owned Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) of Malaysia Tan Sri Dato Ajit Singh, presidents and officials of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of ASEAN nations - Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, officials of ASEAN Secretariat and the World Bank, representatives of Bangladesh and India, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises, President of UMFCCI U Win Myint and Central Executive Committee members, Ambassadors and staff of Embassies of ASEAN nations in Yangon, local and foreign entrepreneurs, local journalists led by Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, Patron of Myanmar Foreign Correspondents Club U Sein Win, President of U Sao Khai Hpa and member correspondents, local journalists and specially invited guests. (2) Secretary-1 receives former ASEAN Secretary-General

YANGON, 27 May - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received former ASEAN Secretary-General and Director of International Business Venture of Petronas Oil Co Tan Sri Dato Ajit Singh and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

Also present together with the Secretary-1 were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(3) ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting concludes

YANGON, 27 May - The ASEAN-Chamber of Commerce and Industry 56th Council Meeting hosted by the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry successfully concluded at Sedona Hotel here this evening.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr Suthad Setboonsarng, President of ASEAN-CCI Tan Sri Dato Tajudin Ramli, Former Secretary-General of ASEAN Director of State-owned Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) of Malaysia Tan Sri Dato Ajit Singh, presidents and officials of the members of Commerce and Industry of ASEAN nations, representatives of ASEAN Secretariat, the World Bank, Bangladesh and India, President of UMFCCI U Win Myint and Central Executive Committee members, local and foreign entrepreneurs and departmental personal.

Then the participants discussed the topic Private sector response to the ASEAN Economic Recovery Plan.

In the afternoon session, Working Committee of ASEAN-CCI and Business Councils presented reports.

The meeting also discussed subject matters to be raised at the 31st ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting in Singapore, the ASEAN-CCI Statement, financial matters concerning approval of financial statement for year ended 31 March 1998, year 1999/ 2000 budget and other matters on Hanoi Plan of Action the private sector perspective and project proposal under the Russia ASEAN Cooperation Fund.

The meeting adopted the reports.

Mr George Abrahim of Singapore gave remarks.

The meeting successfully concluded in the evening.

(4) Minister meets Israel and Bangladesh Ambassadors

YANGON, 27 May - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met Ambassador of Israel Mr Gad Nathan at his office at 3.30 pm today.

Ambassador of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Mr Jahangir Saadat called on Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin at 4.30 pm.

Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung and U Ohn Myint, heads of department and officials of the ministry.

(5) Minister for Industry-1 receives Chinese and Japanese entrepreneurs

YANGON, 27 May - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received Vice-President Mr Yang Yanru of China National General Machinery Engineering Corp and party at 2.30 pm and Assistant General Manager Mr Tom Sato of Mitsui & Co Ltd (Yangon Branch) and party at 3.30 pm.

Also present at the calls were Deputy Ministers for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, and directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises.

(6) Minister receives chairmen of Mekon Delta Co and Dong Shin Construction Co

YANGON, 27 May - Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San received the delegation led by Chairman of Mekon Delta Co Ltd Mr Furukawa of Hiroshima, Japan, at his office this afternoon.

They discussed sale of Myanma arts and crafts and furniture made of wood and rattan in the world market and businesses which can be done on mutually beneficial basis.

The minister also met Chairman of Dong Shin Construction Co Ltd of the Republic of Korea Mr Kwon Young Hoon and party at his office at 2.00 pm. They discussed matters related to construction works, garment factories and toothpaste factories, lease of the cooperative commercial centre and seeking permission from Myanma Investment Commission.

Also present at the calls were Director-General of Cooperative Department U Maung Hti, Deputy Director-General of Cottage Industry Department U Tin Aung, General Manager of Cooperative Export and Import Enterprise U Myo Than, adviser Dr Than Htaik and officials of the office of the Ministry of Cooperatives.

(7) Chief of Armed Forces Training meets Brig Noor Ud Din Ahmed and study delegation

YANGON, 27 May - Chief of Armed. Forces Training of Ministry of Defence Maj-Gen Win Myint received an eight-member study mission led by Brig Noor Ud Din Ahmed of Pakistan National Defence College of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 8 am today.

Also present together with Maj-Gen Win Myint were Commandant of National Defence College Maj-Gen San Aung and Tatmadaw officers.

The delegation was accompanied by Commercial Counselor of Pakistan Embassy Mr Mubarak Kham.

Then, Brig Noor Ud Din Ahmed and party called on Commandant of National Defence College Maj-Gen San Aung at National Defence College at 9 am today.

Brig Noor Ud Din Ahmed signed in the visitor's book at the college and the delegation members visited the courses and the exhibitions of the college.

Then, Commandant Maj-Gen San Aung extended greetings and explained the facts about the college with the video tape to the delegation at Anawrahta Hall.

Afterwards, Col Ye Htut and Col Kyaw Thein of Ministry of Defence, Police Col Ngwe Soe Tin of Ministry of Home Affairs, Deputy Director-General U Aung Bwa of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Director-General Daw Than Nwe of Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development explained the facts about their ministries and exchanged souvenirs.

The delegation went to Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road at 4 pm and Director of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut conducted the delegation round the museum.

(8) Bago Division leading 21st ISD Golf Championship after third round

YANGON, 27 May - The 21st Inter-State and Division Golf Championship continued at Yangon Golf Club this morning.

After the third round, defending championship Bago Division is leading with 724 strokes in team scratch division, followed by Yangon with 728.

Mandalay is at the third place with 733, Ayayawady fourth with 750 and Shan State (North) fifth with 751.

In team handicap division, Sagaing is leading with 616 strokes. Kachin is at the second place with 619.

Mon is at the third place with 620 while Taninthayi is at the fourth place with 628.

In individual scratch, top players after the third round are Zaw Lin (Bago) with 237, Myo Khaing (Yangon) with 238, Zaw Win (Bago) with 240, Win Naing (Shan State-North) with 241 and John Nay Lin (Yangon) with 242.

In individual handicap, top players are Win Naing (Mon) with 190, Aung Win (Sagaing) with 202, Tun Win (Kachin) with 204, Than Naing Oo(Sagaing) 206 and Aung Lin (Shan State-South) with 206.The final round continues tomorrow.

(9) Minister meets Counsellor of Embassy of Japan

YANGON, 27 May - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung met Counsellor of Embassy of Japan Mr Naoki Ito who called at the MIC Office at 3 pm today.

Also present at the call were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(10) ASEAN-CCI President leaves

YANGON, 27 May - ASEAN-CCI President Tan Sri Dato Tajudin Ramli who attended the ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting and Business Forum, left here by air this evening.

He was seen off at Yangon International Airport by President of UMFCCI U Win Myint and officials.

(11) Minister meets Director-General of Ministry of Food of India

YANGON, 27 May - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than met Director-General of Ministry of Food of India Mr Rajiv Srivastava and party who called at his office at 4 pm today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers Commodore Myo Tint and Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, advisers, Director-General U Nyunt Aye of Directorate of Trade and Managing Director U Saw Aung of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading and together with the guests was the Ambassador of India.

(12) Myittha Township NLD

YANGON, 27 May - Fifty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division.

Fifty-two members of Myittha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 5 May 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
