(1) Secretary-1, Secretary-2 attend dinner in honour of delegates of ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting and Business Forum

YANGON, 26 May - The Organizing Committee for ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting and Business Forum hosted dinner in honour of delegates and participants to ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting and Business Forum at Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 7 pm today, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe.

The dinner was also attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, ministers, deputy ministers, heads of department, Former ASEAN Secretary-General and Director of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) Tan Sri Dato Ajit Singh and wife, ASEAN-CCI President Tan Sri Dato Tajudin Ramli and wife and party, officials of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of ASEAN member countries, President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint and CEC members, Ambassadors of ASEAN member countries, local and foreign economic entrepreneurs, and guests.

Artistes and staff of Fine Arts Department of Ministry of Culture entertained the guests with traditional dances and songs at the dinner.

(2) Secretary-1 receives ASEAN-CCI President

YANGON, 26 May - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received ASEAN-CCI President Tan Sri Dato Tajudin Ramli and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 5 pm today.

Also present together with the Secretary-1 were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and, Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

They discussed economic affairs.

(3) Minister for Commerce meets PRC Ambassador

YANGON, 26 May - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than met Ambassador of People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong and party who called at his office at 10 am today.

ASEAN-CCI President Tan Sri Dato Tajudin Ramli and party called on Minister Maj-Gen Kyaw Than at 11 am today.

The minister also met Former ASEAN Secretary-General and Director of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) Tan Sri Dato Ajit Singh and party currently here to attend the ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting and Business Forum, who called at his office at 4 pm today.

They discussed bilateral economic co-operation. Also present at the calls were Deputy Ministers for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint and Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, advisers, Director-General of Trade Department U Nyunt Aye and officials.

(4) ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting and Business Forum begin

YANGON, 26 May - The ASEAN-Chamber of Commerce and Industry 56th Council Meeting and Business Forum hosted by the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry was opened at Sedona Hotel here this morning.

Present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, Former Secretary-General of ASEAN Director of State-owned Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) of Malaysia Tan Sri Dato Ajit Singh, President of ASEAN-CCI Tan Sri Dato Tajudin Ramli, ASEAN-CCI members, presidents and officials of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of ASEAN nations-Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, officials of ASEAN Secretariat and World Bank, representatives of Bangladesh and India, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises, President of UMFCCI U Win Myint and Central Executive Committee members, Ambassadors and staff of Embassies of ASEAN nations in Yangon, local and foreign entrepreneurs, Patron of Myanmar Foreign Correspondent Club U Sein Win, President U Sao Khai Pha and member correspondents, local journalists and specially invited guests.

(5) Myanmar artistes stage cultural Dances in Japan

YANGON, 26 May - Myanmar artistes staged dance variety and anyeint programmes in Tokyo on 22 and 23 May at the Myanmar-Japan friendship cultural show. The anyeint programmes were participated by film stars Moh Moh Myint Aung and Tint Tint Tun and Moedi, Moss, Ayaing and Mann Win as comedians.

The show was formally opened at Nihon Kyoiku Kaikan Theatre in Tokyo by Myanmar Ambassador to Japan U Khin Maung Thein and Chairman of Institute of Asian Ethno-Forms and Culture Mr Kaneko.

Led by Chairman of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon U Sein Tin, the artistes arrived in Tokyo on 20 May after leaving Yangon International Airport the previous day.

(6) Thai delegation tours Shan State (East)

YANGON, 26 May - The Thai delegation led by Secretary-General of Thai Narcotic Control Board (NCB) Mr Payont Pantsri and Director-General of Thai Police Force Police General Pracha Promong, together with Secretary of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Head of Department of the Office of the Strategic Studies Col Kyaw Thein of the Ministry of Defence, Deputy Director-General of the Department for the Progress of Border Areas and National Races Lt-Col Myint Swe and officials, left for Kengtung by Tatmadaw aircraft yesterday morning.

On arrival there, they were welcomed by Deputy Commander of Triangle Region Command Brig-Gen Myint Swe and senior military officers.

Then, they arrived at Wanpon Agricultural Farm in Lwehsansaw region, Monghsat Township, by Tatmadaw aircraft in the afternoon.

They were welcomed there by Tactical Operations Commander Col Tin Maung Ohn and Wa national race leader U Pauk Yu Ei of Special Region-2 and local national people.

They heard reports on cultivation of Lychee plants under the opium substitute agricultural programme and works for regional development.

Afterwards, they proceeded to Mongla in Shan State (East).

They were welcomed there by national race leader U Sai Lin and local national people.

They observed measures taken for the opium-free zone and development of Mongla.

Joint Commander of Shan state (East) Police Force Police Col Saw Hse Wah Nyunt hosted a dinner in honour of the Thai delegation at the New Kengtung Hotel at night.

This morning, the delegation visited Hongpan Pig Farm covered by the opium substitute livestock breeding programme of Wa Special Region-2 at Mongsin Village, Kengtung Township.

The in-charge and officials of the farm explained matters related to opium substitute agriculture and livestock breeding.

Then, they left Kengtung and arrived back here at 1.00 am. The Thai delegation, which arrived here on 24 May to attend the Meeting on Myanmar-Thai Joint Narcotic Drug Control, left for Thailand by air at 7.30 pm today.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and senior police officers and officials of Thai Embassy.

(7) Blood donated for DSGH and Children's Hospital

YANGON, 26 May - Mibagonyi Blood Donors Association led by U Haik Gi and Daw Bo Ma of Maubin Township, Ayeyawady Division, donated blood for inpatients of No 2 Defence Service General Hospital (500-bed) and children undergoing treatment at the Children's Hospital at the respective hospitals this morning.

At No 2 DSGH, U Win Myint, on behalf of blood donors, explained the purpose of blood donation, and Commandant Col Min Naing presented certificates of honour to the donors and spoke words of thanks.

A total of 70 members of the association donated blood.

At the Children's Hospital, U Ohn Myint, on behalf of blood donors, explained the purpose of blood donation.

(8) Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson give talks an MMCWA

YANGON, 26 May - Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe attended the Management Multiplier Course No 5/99 for USDA executives sponsored by Mingala Taungnyunt Union Solidarity and Development Association at Basic Education High School No 1 Mingala Taungnyunt Township this morning. First, well-wisher U Sein Htay-Daw Than Than and family presented K 10,000 to Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe for Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association.

Then, Chairperson Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Vice Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe gave talks on Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs.

(9) Defending champion Bago Division leading 21st ISD Golf Championship

YANGON, 26 May - The 21st Inter-State and Division Golf Championship continued at Yangon Golf Club this morning. Among the spectators who watched the second round of the tourney were President of Myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, Secretary U Aung Kyi and executives.

After the second round, defending champion Bago Division is leading with 483 strokes in team scratch division, followed by Yangon with 483.

Ayeyawady is at the third place with 487, Shan State (North) fourth with 447 and Mandalay fifth With 498.

In team handicap division, Kachin State is leading with 404 strokes. Sagaing is at the second place with 409. Shan State (North) and Taninthayi tied at the third place with 417 each while Mon State is at the fourth place with 420. In individual scratch, top players after the second round are Win Naing (Shan State (North)) with 155 strokes, Zaw Lin (Bago) with 158, Zaw Win (Bago) with 158, John Nay Lin with 161 and Myo Khaing (Yangon) with 161. In individual handicap, top players are Tun Win (Kachin) with 130, Win Naing (Mon) with 130, Aung Win (Sagaing) with 133, Aung Lin (Shan State (South)) with 134 and Aye Min (Shan State (East) with 135.The third round continues tomorrow.

(10) Study mission of Pakistan arrives

YANGON, 26 May - An eight-member study mission led by Brig Noor Ud Din Ahmed of Pakistani National Defence College of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan arrived here this morning.

They were welcomed at the Yangon International Airport by Commandant of National Defence College Maj-Gen San Aung and officials of the Ministry of Defence, Ambassador of Pakistan Mr Amar Hafeez and officials.

Ambassador Mr Amar Hafeez hosted dinner in honour of the study mission at Traders Hotel.

Commandant of National Defence College Maj-Gen San Aung, senior military officers of Ministry of Defence and officials of departments concerned attended the dinner.

YANGON, 26 May - Well-wishers donated books to libraries of Information and Public Relations Department at the IPRD Head Office this morning.

(12) C-in-C (Navy)'s Championship Shield Shooting Competition

YANGON, 26 May - Commander-in-Chief (Navy)'s Championship Shield Shooting Competition yesterday began at Naval Training Command Headquarters.

Commander of Naval Flotilla Captain San Win made a speech and formally opened the competition.

Present on the occasion were Commander of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters Commodore Khin Aung, officials and Tatmadaw members.

(13) 4899g of ephedrine power seized in Mandalay

YANGON, 26 May - Members of the regional Defence Services Intelligence unit seized ephedrine powder weighing 4,899 gram from the residence of a bus terminal in-charge at Thirimingala Housing Complex at the comer of 22nd and 88th streets, Aungmyethazan Township, Mandalay, on 13 May.

The authorities, acting on information, searched the apartment of Paung Kham Khaing, in charge of Chintaungdan Bus Terminal in Mandalay and son of U Kin Do Kham, and uncovered the drug.

On further investigation, the authorities arrested Htan Lan Mon, younger brother of Paung Kham Khaing (a) Kyi Maung of Pinlon Ward, Kalay, at Naing Oo and Brothers Car Workshop, in Gangaw Lane between 60 A and 60 D streets, Pyigyidagun Township, in connection with dealing drugs.

Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(14) 412 drug-related cases exposed in April

YANGON, 26 May - Members of the Tatmadaw and Myanmar Police Force and personnel of Customs Department exposed 412 drug-related cases in April 1999.

The authorities seized 239.0164 kilos of opium in 23 cases, 52.6285 kilos of heroin in 173 cases, 4.192 kilos of marijuana in 51 cases, 43.42 litres of Phensedyl in 10 cases, 2.6141 kilos of low-grade opium in 12 cases, 22.5156 kilos of opium oil in two cases, 24.1 kilos of brown opium, 4,828,255 stimulant tablets in 46 cases, 564.2835 kilos of ephedrine in seven cases, 0.195 kilos of stimulant powder, 279.5 kilos of soda, 8.064 litres of cough syrup in six cases, 0.124 kilos of chemical powder, 8 kilos of phenylacetic acid in one case, 127.4 litres of acetic anhydride, 7,500.9 litres of ether in four cases, 6,628.44 litres of chemical liquid, 67 cases for failure to register and ten other cases.

Action was taken against 562 persons-468 men and 94 women, according to the law.

(15) XX SEA Games soccer matches to begin on 30 July

YANGON, 26 May - The football matches of XX SEA Games to be held in Brunei will begin on 30 July.

Thailand meets the Philippines on 30 July while Vietnam plays Laos on the same day. Ten South-East Asian countries are divided into two groups.

Myanmar is grouped with Thailand, the Philippine, Vietnam and Laos.

Group B includes Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei.

Myanmar will play her first group match with the Philippines on 1 August and meets Vietnam on 3 August and her neighbor Thailand on 8 August. Thailand is the defending champion.

(16) 23 members resign from Myaing Township NLD

YANGON, 26 May - Twenty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myaing Township, Magway Division.

Twenty-three members of Myaing Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 14 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(17) 11 members resign from Phyu Township NLD

YANGON, 26 May - Eleven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Phyu Township, Bago Division.

Eleven members of Phyu Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 15 May 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
