(2)  Effective combination of physical, intellectual ability of workers will definitely raise the production capacity

YANGON, 25 May - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla met staff of No 1 Cement Plant at the factory in Myainggalay, Hpa-an Township, Kayin State, on 23 May.

Arrangements are being made to put 14 million acres under monsoon paddy and 4 million acres under summer paddy. Success has been achieved in reclaiming virgin and fallow lands and wetlands with the participation of national entrepreneurs. Modern techniques are being applied in using natural resources for national industrial progress. Tasks of the State sector and the private sector have been designated in running heavy industries and middle and small-scale industries in boosting production of basic commodities, reducing imports and developing technical know-how for the emergence of an industrial nation.

Good foundations can be laid for enhancing the production capacity of industries which will fulfil the requirements of farming, fisheries, forestry, energy, mining and other sectors. Cement is the essential material in implementing nation-development tasks in the entire nation. Priority should be given to boosting cement production and quality as cement required for nation-building projects is being imported. Production power of the factory should be raised with the cooperation of technicians.

(4)  The Official Opening of ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting and Business Forum

On the auspicious occasion of ASEAN-CCI Business Forum held in conjunction with ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting I have pleasure to send this message with a view to have greater coherence in economic and technical cooperation among the ASEAN member countries.

The world economy has passed through two phases of development in the last fifty years. We are now entering the third phase which can be typically referred to as a phase of The Globalized Economy. Billions of people are becoming increasingly interested in the process of globalization. Globalization calls for greater integration and interlocking economic relationships among national economies. Globalization is a natural outgrowth of technological advances in communications, transport and access to information. It has become an irreversible process.

This interconnected economy is transforming the world in more fundamental ways than is implied by the globalization of goods and services. An information technology revolution has already started. Now, as we approach the end of the 1990s, there are signs that a new dimension is being added to the integration process. Rapid advances in digital technologies and communications networks are creating the possibility of border-less economy in key sectors. Hundreds of thousands of consumers are doing "Electronic shopping" today, E-Commerce in other words. This information-based economy is perhaps best symbolized by the Internet.

There is a close relationship between trade, investment and development. Investment has become an even more powerful force for integration of nations. "Trade to invest and invest to trade" has become the business strategy of our time.

We are holding this ASEAN-CCI Business Forum and the 56th Council Meeting against this global economic background. There is a need to further deepen our integration and cooperation within the ASEAN, both in public and private sectors not just to face the challenges of the border-less globalized economy only, but also to make best use of the business and investment opportunities arising out of it in the next millennium.

Major General Kyaw Than
Minister for Commerce
The Government of the Union of Myanmar
May 26, 1999.
