(1) Development in Rakhine State picks up speed

YANGON, 23 May - Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met members of Thandwe District and Township Peace and Development Councils, Rakhine State, district and township-level departmental officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and District Working Committee for Women's Affairs in the city hall in Thandwe on 22 May morning.

Chairman of Thandwe District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Than reported on cultivation and yield of summer and monsoon paddy, beans and pulses, oil crops, chilli, vegetables, herbal plants, industrial crops and such perennial crops as rubber and oil palms, extension of monsoon paddy cultivation, the amount of fish caught by the trawlers, sea prawn breeding, upgrading of Taunggup-Padaung Road, Gwa-Ngathainggyaung-Yekyi Road and Thandwe-Gwa Road, construction of Ma-ei Creek Bridge and Kaingshe Creek Bridge in Taunggup Township, matters related to the education, health and trade sectors, and development works being undertaken in the district and requirements.

In his address, the Secretary-l said the purpose of meeting regional departmental personnel is to promote production, improve commercial activities and fulfill requirements for regional development.

With regard to regional development, just as the Government has to provide assistance but also district and township level departmental personnel and locals on their part need to make efforts strenuously; it is required to carry out works by combining assistance to be provided by the Government and efforts made by locals of respective regions.

As the topography of Thandwe District is good, agricultural and livestock breeding works are making good progress and there are favorable conditions conducive to success of works which will contribute to the development of the State.

Hence, assistance is to be provided with the aim to promote such works likely to be successful as tourism industry, fisheries industry, fish and prawn breeding works and agricultural works which have access to foreign markets, and to enable the private sector to make progress in accord with rules and regulations and laws.

The private business of national people which are becoming successful more and more, need to pay due taxes correctly with a view to contributing towards construction works of the Government and development of the State.

If the Government encourages the businesses of the private sector and strives for the better living standard of the people with the use of taxes and the private entrepreneurs to do their business diligently and pays due taxes to the Government conscientiously and faithfully, a prosperous, modern and developed nation will soon the emerge and the people will be able to live with peace of mind. The Secretary-1 urged locals and departmental personnel to discharge their duties conscientiously and diligently.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Township People's Hospital Thandwe. They were welcomed there by Medical Superintendent Dr Min Thein and medical staff. The Secretary-1 later toured the hospital and inspected wards and the operation theater.

Next, the Secretary-1 and party went to Ngapali Rubber Plantation of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise in Thandwe. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party went to Lontha Sea Prawn-Spawn Production Station of Fisheries Department in Thandwe.

The Secretary-1 and party stopped for the night at Bandoola Yeiktha in Sittway. The Secretary-1 and party left Sittway at 1.00 pm and arrived back here in the afternoon.

Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than accompanying the Secretary-l, met the manager of Rakhine State, departmental managers and township managers of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading in the meeting hall of the Rakhine State Manager's Office on 22 May evening.

The minister gave instructions on purchase of crops, transport, storage, milling works, distribution, prevention of natural disasters and staff welfare.

Members of the Central Executive Committee of USDA Col Tin Hlaing, Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Brig-Gen Thein Aung and Brig-Gen Khin Maung met executive committee members of Rakhine State, Sittway District and Township USDAs at the office of Rakhine State USDA on 22 May evening. Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing also met departmental officials at different levels under the ministry in the meeting room of Rakhine State General Administration Department on 22 May evening.

He gave instructions on departmental works.

Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, together with Deputy Minister U Pe Than met officials of Myanmar Pon Authority Marine Administration Department, Inland Water Transport, Water Resources and Waterways Development Department, Department of Civil Aviation and Myanma Airways at Sittway Dockyard in Sittway on 22 May evening.

The minister gave instructions on the works. Then, the minister and party inspected the dockyard and gave instructions. Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung also met Rakhine State, district and township-level departmental officials at the office of Rakhine State Immigration and National Registration Department on 22 May evening.

Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung also gave instructions on cultivation works to officials of Myanma Agriculture Service, Settlement and Land Records Department, Irrigation Department and Agriculture Mechanization Department at the office of Rakhine State Agriculture Service on 22 May evening.

Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung explained matters related to formation of school boards of trustees and opening of multimedia classrooms at the schools to Rakhine State and township education officers, school heads and teachers at No 4 Basic Education High School in Sittway on 22 May evening.

Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo also inspected People's Hospital and Nursing and Midwifery Training School in Sittway on 22 May evening and gave instructions on works.

(2) Mazin Reservoir will help flood control, agricultural extension in Bago Division

YANGON, 23 May - The inauguration of Mazin Reservoir was held in Bago Township this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

The ceremony was held at Mingala Mandat near the reservoir.

Also present were officials of divisional level departments, chairmen of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, service personnel, local people, teachers, students, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, members of Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, members of band and pom pom dance troupes numbering about 30,000.

In his address, the Secretary-2 said Mazin Reservoir was mainly built for supply of drinking water to the people in Bago and it was built because of increasing population in Bago, establishment of Myothit and factories and Hanthawady International Airport guidance on construction of diversion weirs at first at the lower part of the reservoirs for irrigation without waiting for the completion of the reservoirs and efforts for boosting double cropping.

The Secretary-2 said the government relies on Bago Division in production of paddy and emphasis is being placed on extended cultivation of paddy. National entrepreneurs who have capital are now engaged in reclamation of thousands of acres of fallow and virgin land and modern farmland will emerge soon, he said.

Next, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the reservoir and met those present. The earth reservoir, 4,100 feet long and 60 feet high, is built on Mazin Creek at a cost of over K 275 million and it can supply 11 million gallons of drinking water to Bago and irrigate 650 acres each for farmland and crops land.

(3) Thai study delegation arrives

YANGON, 23 May - Thai study delegation comprising 80 trainees and course instructors of Thai Joint-Command and General Staff College led by Commandant of the College Lt-Gen Boonsrang Niumpradit arrived here by special flight this morning.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Commandant of Command and General Staff College Brig-Gen Soe Tint and Tatmadaw officers, Defence, Army and Air Attache of Thai Embassy Col Chaiwat Satondee and embassy staff. The delegation visited Defence Services Museum where Director of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut and officials conducted them round the museum.

Lt-Gen Boonsrang Niumpradit presented souvenirs to Col Ye Htut.

The Thai delegation visited the Shwedagon Pagoda in the evening and donated cash to members of the Board of Trustees for the pagoda funds.

(4) ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting arrive

YANGON, 23 May - Delegates from ASEAN member countries arrived here by air today to attend the ASEAN Chambers of Commerce and Industry 56th Council Meeting and Business Forum sponsored by Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, from 25 to 28 May at Sedona Hotel.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by President and officials of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Officials of ASEAN-CCI Headquarters arrived here by air at 11.40 am and were welcomed at the airport by Secretary of UMFCCI U Zaw Min Win, Chairman of Reception and Accommodation Committee U Ko Ko Htwe, EC member U Moe Kyaw and Executive Officer U Htay Aung.

Former ASEAN Secretary-General Tan Sri Dato Ajit Singh, Executive Director of ASEAN Secretariat Mr Idris Basok, Director-General of Confederation of Asia-Pacific CCI (China-Taiwan) Mr Lawrence T Liu, Deputy Director-General of Confederation of Asia-Pacific CCI (Philippines) Mr R J Dela Cuesta and officials arrived here by air at 6.50 pm today.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by President of UMFCCI U Win Myint, Vice-Chairman U Htain Win, Secretary U Zaw Min Win and EC members and officials.

(5) Minister arrives back after attending Drug Abuse Control Ministerial Meeting of MoU six countries

YANGON, 23 May - A Myanmar delegation led by Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt arrived back here by air this evening after attending Drug Abuse Control Ministerial Meeting of MoU six countries in Vientiane, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, on 21 May.

Members of the delegation-Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Deputy Director General Lt-Col Myint Swe of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races, Director of CCDAC Office Police Col Khin Aung and Major Maung Maung Kyaw of the Ministry of Defence also arrived back.

A ceremony to open the Drug Abuse Control Ministerial Meeting of MoU-six countries was held in Vientiane, Lao PDR, on 21 May morning, with an address by Prime Minister of Lao PDR Mr Sisavath Keibounphanh.

Present on the occasion were ministers from Cambodia, People' s Republic of China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

After the opening ceremony, leader of Myanmar delegation Minister Col Thein Nyunt delivered an address. He said Myanmar is focusing on the UNDCP projects eradication of narcotic drugs, reducing drug abuse and annual cultivation of opium and destruction of narcotic drugs which were seized. Cultivation of opium substitute crops is being implemented by Government of the Union of Myanmar, he added. Myanmar is actively undertaking opium elimination in accord with Strategic Plan for Elimination of Narcotic Drugs, he said.

At 5.45 pm, Minister Col Thein Nyunt together with other representative ministers called on President of Lao PDR Mr Khamtay Siphandone at the Hawkham Palace.

Member of the delegation Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of MPF Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and members attended the Drug Abuse Control High-Ranking Officials Meeting of MoU six countries in Vientiane from 18 to 20 May and reported on narcotic drugs control being jointly carried out by UNDCP and the Union of Myanmar, with the aid of video documentaries.

(6) Abhidhamma and Visuddhi Magga Pali Literature Course opens

YANGON, 23 May - Abhidhamma and Visuddhi Magga Pali Literature Course sponsored by the Department for Promotion and Propagation of Sasana was opened at the Library and Pitakattaik Training Hall, Kaba Aye, today.

Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa supplicated on religious matters.

Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Masoeyein Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa delivered an ovadakatha.

Course-in-charge Sayadaw Baddanta Vayamasara spoke about the course.

In his supplications to the Sayadaws, Maj-Gen Sein Htwa said the Ministry of Religious Affairs has conducted the course eight times in eight years, and there were over 400 who had completed Abhidhammai Visuddhi Course.

Afterwards, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister U Aung Khin and officials presented offertories to the Sayadaws.

(7) Pazundaung Township MCWA's Annual General Meeting held

YANGON, 23 May - Annual General Meeting of Pazundaung Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held in conjunction with election of new executives at No 2 Basic Education High School this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Supervisory Committee for Yangon Division MCWA Dr Tin Maung Win, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Chit Wai and members, Chairperson Daw Thein Kyi of Township MCWA and executives, charity institutions and chairmen of Ward Peace and Development Councils.

Meeting Chairperson Daw Thein Kyi, Dr Tin Maung Win, and U Chit Wai made speeches.

(8)  "Wisdom Bank" Book Exhibition to be opened

YANGON, 23 May - Wisdom Bank" Book Exhibition of Yangon West District Information and Public Relations Department will be opened at Bahan Township Information and Public Relations Department's Office at 1 pm from 25 to 29 May, during office hours.

Admission is free to all.

(9) 45 members resign from Sedoktara Township NLD

YANGON, 23 May - Forty-five members resigned from National League for Democracy of Sedoktara Township, Magway Division.

Forty-five members of Sedoktara Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resign by sending letters of resignation to Sedoktara Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 27 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
