(1) Qualified human resources can increase value of natural resources and raise people's living standards; Government will gather Myanmar's intellectual might in developing human resources

YANGON, 19 May - Union Solidarity and Development Association Executives Advanced Management Course No 5 and course No 18 were opened in the Pyidaungsu Hall of Central Public Relations Unit in Hmawby, Yangon Division, at 9 am today, addressed by Patron of USDA Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe.

The Senior General said he will give guidance to USDA members on what should be known. Opening of such courses is to train member youths to enable them to discharge national duties well.

If the courses conducted by the USDA are studied, it can be seen that as the lectures are being given with the aim of uplifting the qualifications of the members to discharge the duties of the association while understanding the prescriptions such as the pledge, aims and basic principles of the association, the objectives and goals of the State are also being taught to enable the members to discharge the duties of the nation. Moreover, basic accountancy courses, computer courses and international courses are being conducted to promote their administrative and technical qualification and to enable them to get acquainted with international affairs.

"As you are attending these courses, other youths numbering in millions in the entire nation are also attending courses such as cultural courses and language proficiency courses sponsored by the association", he said.

The Senior General said today's youths are the investment for the future; they are the most basic strength of human resources; qualified human resources can increase the value of natural resources and also raise the people's living standards; and the powerful human resources which will energetically strive for the nation to be peaceful, modern and developed one with full belief and conviction and firm Union spirit is required.

In conclusion, the Senior General urged USDA members to strive for their association, which was formed to serve the national duties, to organize the entire people to become a national strength; to strive for the association to become a national force safeguarding the independence and sovereignty and the Union; to make efforts to become the human resources essential for the nation by participating in nation-building tasks as a grain of sand and a chunk of brick.

The Senior General cordially met with the trainees and had the morning meal together with them in the Bayintnaung Hall.

(2) Special emphasis placed on development of tourism in Myanmar Targets for 1999-2000 fiscal year of Ministry of Hotels and Tourism discussed

YANGON, 19 May - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met departmental officials of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism at Strand Hotel this afternoon and discussed targets for 1999-2000 fiscal year of the ministry.

Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin said although the ministry partly serves the service sector of economic enterprise, it is not an easy task for the ministry to earn foreign exchange. Guide lines were laid down and duties were assigned to Directorate of Hotels and Tourism and Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services to earn foreign exchange for 1998-99 fiscal year he said.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu reported on duties assigned for implementation of targets in 1999-2000.

The Secretary-1 said now is the time the State Peace and Development Council is endeavoring for emergence of a modern developed nation, for harmonious development in political, economic and social sectors after laying down national plans and for keeping abreast with the nations of the world. As is known to all, the government after taking up duties of State has been making concerted efforts for emergence of a peaceful, modem developed nation as the national goal. All have witnessed that the government is implementing national plans steadfastly towards national economic development and raising social standard of the people, he said.

The Secretary-1 spoke on annual increase in national economic growth rate and efforts to increase more in fourth and fifth years of the project, guidance of Senior General Than Shwe on exceeding of national economic growth rate and holding discussions with officials of ministries concerned after realizing the policies, objectives, tasks and procedures and government's special emphasis on development of tourism in Myanmar.

(3) Secretary-3 attends opening ceremony of "Phyo" Press of USDA

YANGON, 19 May - The opening ceremony of "Phyo" Press of Union Solidarity and Development Association was held at the corner of Mindhamma Road and Pyay Road this morning, attended by member of Panel of Patrons of USDA Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, the Auditor-General, the Chairman of Civil Services Selection and Training Board, members of Panel of Patrons of USDA, EC members of USDA, deputy ministers, senior Tatmadaw officers, EC and members of Yangon Division and Town ship Union Solidarity and Development Associations and guests. Staff Officer of MRTV Daw Than Than Win acted as master of ceremonies.

(4) 37th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology (COST) begins

YANGON, 19 May - The opening ceremony of 37th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology was held at the Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Energy U Tin Tun, Deputy Ministers for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win and Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Ambassadors of ASEAN member countries, heads of department, Chairman of 37th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology Chairman of Science and Technology Committee of Singapore Mr Chong Lit Cheong and chairmen of science and technology committees of other ASEAN member countries, representatives of Secretariat of ASEAN and other member countries and guests.

Chairman of 37th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology Chairman of Science and Technology Committee of Singapore Mr Chong Lit Cheong delivered an opening address. It is indeed a pleasure for me to be here in Yangon for this 37th COST Meeting.

I would like to thank our host, Myanmar, for accepting the invitation to host this meeting despite being a relatively new member to ASEAN and COST.

Chairman of Science and Technology Committee of Singapore Mr Chong Lit Cheong was elected as chairman of the meeting and spoke on the occasion.

Then, Chairmen of the National Committee for Myanmar Science and Technology Dr Chan Nyein extended greetings.

Dr Chan Nyein was elected vice-chairman of the meeting.

The first day meeting ended in the evening.

Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung hosted dinner at the Sedona Hotel in honour of chairmen of science and technology committees of ASEAN member countries in the evening.

(5) Y2K National Supervisory Committee meets

YANGON, 19 May - Y2K National Supervisory Committee held its meeting No 4/99 at the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs on Merchant Street this afternoon.

The meeting was attended by Chairman of Y2K National Supervisory Committee Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win and officials of Y2K National Supervisory Committee and departments.

The minister called for cooperation in realization of the tasks laid down.

Lt-Col Tin Oo of the Office of Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence reported on work done of Y2K data distribution Sub-committee.

Officials of Sub-committees reported on work done and Secretary of Y2K National Supervisory Committee Dr Kyaw Thein work undertaken for international assistance on Y2K.

A general round of discussions then followed.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the minister.

(6) Minister meets Malaysian economic delegation

YANGON, 19 May - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than met Chairman of Penang Importers and Exporters Association Mr Lim Kooi Chuang and party who called at his office this afternoon.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, advisers, Director-General of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye and officials.

They discussed on economic cooperation between the two countries.

(7) Minister meets Director of UNICEF

YANGON, 19 May - Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Director of East Asian and Pacific Region of UNICEF Mr Gautam who called at his office at 1 pm today.

Also present at the call were Director-General Col Sit Myaing of Social Welfare Department, Director-General U Saw Thein of Relief and Resettlement Department, Deputy Director-General U Aung Soe of Fire Services Department and Head of Office U Maung Pi.

(8) Milk powder donated to MMCWA

YANGON, 19 May - Well-wishers presented cans of milk powder worth K 1,440,000 for Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the MMCWA Multi-purpose building at the corner of Thanthumar Road and Parami Road in South Okkalapa Township this afternoon.

Deputy General Manager of Sumitomo Corporation Mr T Onishi explained about donation.

On behalf of Snow Brand Milk Products Co Ltd (Japan), Mr T Onishi presented 150 dozens of 400 gm milk powder and Chairman U Shwe and Manager U Win Aung of Shwethazin Syndicate Co Ltd 50 dozens of cans of milk powder to Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe.

(9) Myanmar artistes delegation leaves for Japan

YANGON, 19 May - Myanmar artistes delegation of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon left here by air for Japan this evening to present Myanmar-Japan traditional customs there.

The first delegation led by Bogalay Tint Aung left here by air for Japan on 14 May.

(10) Malaysian, Myanmar businessmen hold talks

YANGON, 19 May - The 26-member Malaysian economic delegation led by Chairman of Importers and Exporters Association of Penang Mr Lim Kooi Chuan (PKT) held discussions with officials of Union of Myanmar Federation Chambers of Commerce and Industry at UMFCCI Headquarters on Merchant Street this morning.

Chairman of UMFCCI U Win Myint explained investment, business and trade opportunities in Myanmar.

(11) 31 members resign from Monyo Township NLD

YANGON, 19 May - Thirty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Monyo Township, Bago Division.

Thirty-one members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monyo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 23 March 1999 and eight members followed suit on 26 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12) 11 members resign from Patheingyi Township NLD

YANGON, 19 May - Eleven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Division.

Eleven members of Patheingyi Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Patheingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 22 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
