(1) General Maung Aye urges people of Kayah State to strive for regional sufficiency of food

YANGON, 17 May - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye visited the Sutaungpyi Myonan Shwezedi and made donations in Loikaw, Kayah State, on 15 May.

They later visited Thirimingala Taungdaw (Taungkwe) Pagoda and Shwedaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik, and inspected Loikaw Railway Station and development works in the town.

Yesterday, the General and party traveled to Bawlake by helicopter and were welcomed there by Commander of No 55 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Sein Lin, Acting Tactical Operations Commander Lt Col Kyaw Min Than, Chairman of Bawlake District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Min, township authorities, officials.

In his meeting with officers and other ranks of the battalions and units in Bawlake Station and district and township authorities and officials and personnel, General Maung Aye said that for stability of the State, the government invited the armed groups, who had emerged since the time independence was regained, to make peace as it realized that national development projects could not be implemented if there was no peace and stability.

Now that 17 armed groups had returned to the legal fold, regional development could be implemented with their cooperation and with the government's leadership, he said and added that the government has always kept the door open for the remnants of just a few armed groups to return to the legal fold.

Afterwards, chairmen of Township Peace and Development Councils reported on the agriculture projects in townships and regional development works.

Chairman of Bawlake District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Min also reported on availability of water for agricultural purposes, housing for service personnel, power and water supply, construction of TV retransmission station, and renovation and maintenance of roads.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo also coordinated matters to fulfil the requirements in implementation of regional development projects. In his concluding address, General Maung Aye urged the Tatmadawmen and families, service personnel and people to work in accord with the plans for sufficiency of rice and expand cultivation of sesamum corn and beans and other perennial crops.

The General and party proceeded to Innlay Phaung-dawU Pagoda, Nyaungshwe Township, Shan State, where they were welcomed by Commander of the Tactical Operations Command Col Thein Swe, township authorities, members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees, and regional people.

The General and party paid obeisance at the pagoda, and later paid respects to PhaungdawU Pagoda Ovadacariya Namhu Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumuda and other Sayadaws.

Minister Col Thein Nyunt, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint and Minister U Thaung also inspected the activities of mills and departments under respective ministries in Loikaw and Kalaw.

(2) Secretary-1 receives Minister of Agriculture of Malaysia

YANGON, 17 May - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Minister of Agriculture of Malaysia Hon Datuk Amar Dr Sulaiman Hj Dand and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this morning.

Also present at the call were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Ambassador of Malaysia Mr Daeo Mohamad bin Noh.

(3) Full dress rehearsal of artistes of MMPA

YANGON, 17 May - Full dress rehearsal of artistes of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street this evening.

The artistes will perform Myanmar-Japan goodwill traditional culture in Japan.

The Secretary-1 met artistes and gave instruction on Myanmar-Japan goodwill and high performance of Myanma cultural art.

(4) Minister meets Japanese businessmen

YANGON, 17 May - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met officials of Yangon based companies-General Manager Mr Osamu Ikeya of Daimaru Kogyo Ltd of Japan, General Manager Mr Hitoshi Netsu and party of Marubeni Corporation of Japan, Assistant General Manager Mr Nobuo Kurohara and party of Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan and General Manager Mr Y Sekimoto and party of Tomen Corporation of Japan who separately called at his office today.

Also present at the calls were directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry.

(5) Deputy Prime Minister receives President of Sumitrans (Japan) Corp

YANGON, 17 May - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received President Yoshihiro Hatanaka of Sumitrans (Japan) Corporation and party who called at his office at 3 pm today.

Also present at the call were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of MIC Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials of MIC Office.

(6) Minister meets ROK Ambassador

YANGON, 17 May - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi met with Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Mr Chung Jung-Gum at his office this morning.

Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers for Energy U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen Thein Aung and Director-General of Energy Planning Department U Soe Myint.

(7) MMCWA opens Tailoring, Cookery Course

YANGON, 17 May - Tailoring Course 5/99 and Cooking Course 4/99 sponsored by Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association opened of morning at a meeting hall MMCWA.

Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe gave an opening speech.

Member of Supervisory Committee for Vocational Courses of MMCWA Daw San Lay explained principles of the two-month courses.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Central Executive Committee members of MMCWA and honorary patrons cordially met with trainees.

Thirty trainees are attending the tailoring course and 15 are attending the cooking course.

(8) Minister inspects Thakata Jetty of Myanma Five star Line

YANGON, 17 May - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than inspected Thakayta Jetty of Myanma Five Star Line this morning.

Managing Director of MFSL reported on building of a wall for the main gate, a terminal for passengers and ticket sale.

The minister and party inspected mv Myitkyina bound for Myeik and Kawthoung and loading of goods on mv Loikaw freighter bound for Sittway.

(9) South-West Command Commander attends ordination, novitiation ceremony

YANGON, 17 May - The first collective ordination and novitiation ceremony of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council, and South-West Command, was held at the South-West Command, Pathein, Ayeyawady Division, on 14 and 15 May.

On 14 May, ten men were ordained into monks, and 503 young men were initiated into novices who are offspring of parents from battalions and units in Pathein Station, departments, wards and villages in the township.

Well-wishers under the patronage of the commander and wife, offered soon to the Sayadaws, monks and novices at the booth on 15 May.

Afterwards, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannasiri delivered a sermon and merits gained were shared.

(10) Myanmar, Russian Federation sign agreements on cultural cooperation, protocol on consultations

YANGON, 17 May - A signing ceremony of agreement between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the Russian Federation on cultural cooperation and protocol on consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation was held in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning.

On behalf of the Government of the Union of Myanmar, Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun and Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win signed the agreements on cultural cooperation and protocol on consultations. On behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation, Ambassador of the Russian Federation Mr Gleb A Ivashentsov signed the agreements.

(11) Preliminary meetings of Sub-committees for 37th Meeting on ASEAN CST held

YANGON, 17 May - The Preliminary meetings of the Sub-committees for 37th Meeting on ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology were held at the Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda this morning. Present on the occasion were 55 representatives of ASEAN member countries - Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Before the meetings, Chairman of Organizing Committee for the 37th Meeting on ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko and Deputy Minister U Hlaing Win cordially met the representatives.

In the meeting of Biotechnology Sub-committee, Professor Dr Abdul Latif Ibrahim of Malaysia acted as Meeting Chairman. Dr Sakarindr Bhurniratana of Thailand presided over the meeting of Food Science and Technology Sub-committee. Mr Dennis Wong of Brunei Darussalam presided over the meeting of Microelectronics and Information Technology Sub-committee. Dr Chou Siaw Kiang of Singapore also presided over the meeting of Science and Technology Infrastructure and Resource Development Sub-committee.

The meetings continue tomorrow.

On 18 May, Marine Science Sub-committee and Materials Science and Technology Sub-committee will hold their meeting at the Sedona Hotel.

(12)  Industry Management Course No 1 opened

YANGON, 17 May - The opening ceremony of Industry Management Course No 1 of Regional Industrial Coordination and Industrial Inspection Department of the Ministry of Industry-1 was held at the training hall of the department on Kyaikwaing Pagoda Road in Mayangon Township this morning.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Ministers for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises, officials and trainees.

Altogether 55 trainees are attending the two-week course.

(13) Sports teams recount experience

YANGON, 17 May - A ceremony to recount experience of chess, taekwondo
and bodybuilding teams which took part in the international sports tournaments was
held at the National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna this morning, attended by
Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win.

(14) Transport Minister meets officials

YANGON, 17 May - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe met with staff including pilots and air control officers of the Department of Civil Aviation and Myanma Airways yesterday evening at Aviation Training School.

The minister discussed the work condition and experiences of pilots and air controllers, means to ensure safety of flights discipline and aviation principles, urging them to work dutifully and with efficiency, to strive to meet the work targets, to follow directives and standard operation procedures.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint also took part in the discussions.

(15) Construction of University of Culture (Mandalay) inspected

YANGON, 17 May - Minister for Culture U Win Sein and officials yesterday inspected construction of University of Culture (Mandalay) in Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Division.

Project Director U Tin Htut Aung of Myanma Industrial Construction services reported on construction of the university.

(16) Agricultural cooperation discussed

YANGON, 17 May - Malaysian delegation led by Minister of Agriculture of Malaysia Hon Datuk Amar Dr Sulaiman Hj Dand met Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint at the ministry this morning.

The delegation is currently here at the invitation of Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than.

Present were Ambassador of Malaysia Dr Dato Muhamad bin Noh and officials of the ministry.

Myanmar and Malaysian delegations discussed agricultural cooperation and investment prospects. The Malaysian delegation ,observed agricultural products at the showroom in the ministry.

(17) Library Science Course No 2/99 opens

YANGON, 17 May - Library Science Course No 2/99 of Information and Public Relations Department was opened at the training hall of News and Periodicals Enterprise on Pansodan Street this morning.

On behalf of the Minister for Information, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein said well-experienced scholars would lecture at the course for turning out intellectuals and intelligentsia in accord with the motto - Wisdom Bank-Library.

The six-week course is being attended by 60 trainees from the Ministry of Information and other ministries.

(18) Health education officers presented certificates

YANGON, 17 May - A ceremony to present certificates to health education officers who successfully undertaken at the training courses and seminars from May 1998 to May 1999 in the health education project co-sponsored by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization was held at the Health Department this Morning.

Short Time Adviser to the WHO Mr Bimal Chapagain presented certificates to 29 health education officers. Present on the occasion were officials of departments of the Ministry of Health, officials of WHO and UNICEF.

(19) 75 members resign from Myittha Township NLD

YANGON, 17 May - Seventy-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division.

Seventy-five members of Myittha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 22 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
