(1) General Maung Aye gives suggestions on regional development in Kayah State

YANGON, 16 May - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye left Bahtoo Tatmyo in Yaksawk Township for Pekhon by helicopter yesterday morning.

In Pekhon, General Maung Aye and party were welcomed-by Brig-Gen Thura Sein Thaung, military officers and families, departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and Red Cross Brigade, and regional people.

Afterwards, General Maung Aye and party went round the town, inspecting the development works.

The Ministers met with departmental officials and personnel at the Township Peace and Development Council Office.

They explained to them the government's endeavors in the political, economic and social sectors, efforts for progress in the agriculture sector, implementation of road and bridge projects for uplift of the transport sector, laws, rules and regulations enabling the private sector to participate in the gem mining sector, success in border areas and national races development projects which had been implemented utilizing over K 14 billion in 10 years, cooperation of the 17 armed groups, who returned to the legal fold after the Tatmadaw had assumed State duties, in the regional development projects, the importance of national unity, plans for implementation of agriculture projects in Pekhon Township and efforts needed to provide education for all.

General Maung Aye and party proceeded to Loikaw in Kayah State there by Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Commander of Regional Control Command Brig-Gen Myint Thein and departmental officials.

The General and party met with Kayah State Peace and Development Council members, departmental officials, district and township authorities, departmental officials and personal, and members of social organizations.

In his address General Maung Aye said the government laid down the five-year plan for the nation to become peaceful, modern and developed, and the plan had been implemented up to the third year.

He said success is being achieved in the endeavors being made for realization of the six per cent GDP growth, and noted that while the neighbors are facing economic problems, Myanmar can stand stable due to cooperation of the Tatmadaw and people.

Priority is being given to implementation of the four economic objectives as food is the most primary need for a nation which is stable, he said and added that though Myanmar is a stable country, some foreign nations think t hat it is not stable, and it is due to the external and internal anti-government organizations' fabricated reports.

Afterwards, Kayah State Myanma Agriculture Service Manager U Myint Swe reported on the agriculture projects in the region, Assistant Director of the Water Resources Utilization Department U Tin Lin on the pumping of water from Moebye left canal.

Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung and Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt spoke about the related tasks.

General Maung Aye delivered the concluding address.

In the second session of the meeting, the Secretary-2 spoke at length on the tasks to be carried out for regional development.

Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo, ministers and deputy ministers gave suggestions on the regional development projects.

(2) Call for emergence of qualified and effective Fire Brigade as a national force

YANGON, 16 May - The Secretary-l and party proceeded to Central Fire -Services Training School of Fire Services Department in PyinOoLwin.

Opening ceremonies of Central Fire Services Training School Training Course No 8/99 for Platoon Commanders of Fire Brigade and Men's Basic Training Course No 7/99 were held at the school, with an address by Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present on the occasion were Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Maj-Gen Soe Win, the ministers, the chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the deputy ministers, the Mandalay Mayor, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, members of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of USDA, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, service personnel, Director-General of Fire Services Department Col Myint Tun, Principal of Central Fire Services Training School Col Kyaw Soe, Vice-Principal Lt-Col Zaw Min, course instructors and trainees.

Director-General Col Myint Tun reported on establishment of the school and courses. Next, the Secretary-l met trainees. The Secretary-1 and party went to PyinOoLwin where they were welcomed by PyinOoLwin Station Commander Brig-Gen Moe Hein and officials.

The Secretary-l inspected renovation of Botanical Garden. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone and officials reported on renovation of the garden, arrangement for opening of educative showroom, planting of flowers and trees and others and Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin on arrangements for water supply in PyinOoLwin.

The Secretary-l fulfilled the requirements and gave instructions on implementation of guidance on renovation of Botanical Garden by Senior General Than Shwe.

The Secretary-l and party inspected renovation of Botanical Garden, Kandawgyi and Kandawgalay.

The Secretary-l and party arrived back here in the evening.

(3) Malaysia traders delegation meets UMFCCI EC members

YANGON, 16 May - Malaysia traders delegation led by Minister of Agriculture Hon Datuk Amar Dr Sulaimar Hj Dand arrived at Myanma Gems Museum on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon. They were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein and officials who conducted them round the museum.

The delegation met Chairman U Win Myint and EC member of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industries at Karaweik Palace in the evening.

They discussed on economic and commerce co-operation between the Myanmar and Malaysia and investment opportunities in Myanmar. Chairman U Win Myint hosted dinner in honour of the delegation.

(4) Minister attends officials meeting with Thai economic delegation

YANGON, 16 May - A meeting between Officials of Myanmar Agricultural Sector and Thai high-level economic delegation led by Chairman Mr Dhanin Chearavanont of Charoen Pokphand (CP Group) of Thailand, was held at Meeting Hall of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation this afternoon.

It was attended by Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, departmental heads, entrepreneurs, and chairman and members of CP Group.

The meeting focused on production of quality crops which was explained with audio-visual aids.

Those present at the meeting then viewed the exhibition of the ministry.

(5) Essay Competitions held to mark Myanmar Women's Day

YANGON, 16 May - The Essay Competitions in amateur level, university/college/ institute level, basic education high school level and basic education middle school level to mark 1999 Myanmar Women's Day were simultaneously held at the designated venues in the entire nation from 10 am to 12 am today.

Chairperson of the committee Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Party visited the Assembly; Hall of DSIM in which cadets of medical science and nursing science participated in the University/College/Institute Level Essay Competition to mark the 1999 Myanmar Women's Day.

Chairperson of the committee Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party inspected Basic Education High School No 1 in Kamayut and BEHS No 2 in Sangyoung where the essay competitions in amateur, BEHS and BEMS levels were held.

Chairman of Yangon Division Women' s Affairs Working Committee U Kan Myint, Deputy Director-General U Thaung Shwe of No 3 Basic Education Department, officials of Yangon West District and Township Peace and Development Councils, Headmistresses Daw Myint Myint and Daw Khin May Gyi welcomed and conducted them round the competitions.

(6) ASEAN Ministers and delegates leave

YANGON, 16 May - Ministers and delegates of ASEAN member countries who attended the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting left here by air today for home.

Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr Rodolfo C Severino and wife, Minister of Social Welfare and Labour of Cambodia Mr Ith Samheng, Minister of Labour and Social Welfare of Laos Sompane Pheng Khammy, Minister for Labour, Invalid and Social Welfare of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Thi Hang, Minister of Home Affairs of Brunei Mr Pehin Dato Haji Isa Ibrahim and wife, Minister of State for Manpower of Singapore Mr Othman Haron Eusofe, Assistant-Director of Secretariat of ASEAN Mr Cho Kah Sin and high-ranking officials and their families left here by air today.

(7) Red Cross Auxiliary Fire Brigade members honoured

YANGON, 16 May - A ceremony to honour Red Cross Brigade members who took part in the competition of first-aid capability in commemoration of 1999 World Red Cross Day and outstanding Auxiliary Fire Brigade member in demonstration of fire fighting and rescuing skills to mark 53rd Anniversary Fire Services Day was held in conjunction with prize presentation for the winners this afternoon, attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council

Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.

(8) Bangladesh Defence Services Adjutant General and wife conclude visit

YANGON, 16 May - People's Republic of Bangladesh Defence Services Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Muhammed M Rahman and wife left here by air this evening.

Maj-Gen Muhammed M Rahman and wife were seen off at Yangon International Airport by member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife Daw Marlar Tint, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo and wife, Tatmadaw officers and their wives, Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Jahangir Saadat and wife, Defence Attache of Bangladesh Embassy Brig-Gen Nasiruddin Sarwar and wife and embassy staff.

(9) Sixth Communal Ordination and Novitiation held in Tiger Parahita School

YANGON 16 May - Under the auspices of Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Pandita of Tiger Parahita School for Development of National Races in Hline Township, the Sixth Communal Ordination and Novitiation Ceremony, organized by the School Supervisory Committee, was held at the school on Kamayut Butayon Street in Hline Township this morning.

(10) ASEAN friendship group visits Kyaikhmawwun Pagoda

YANGON, 16 May - With a view to developing Myanmar Tourism Services, the second ASEAN Friendship Overland Expedition 1999, currently here, co-sponsored by Myanmar Hotels and Tourism Services of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, Royal Perak Motor Club of Malaysia and Tourism Authority Board of Thailand, visited Kyaikhmawwun Pagoda in Kyauktan Township, this morning.

This afternoon, the tourists on motorcade left here for Pyay where they will stop over and proceed to Bagan, Mandalay and Innlay.

(11) Malaysia traders delegation visits Mandalay

YANGON, 16 May - Malaysia traders delegation led n by Minister of Agriculture Hon Datuk Amar Dr Sulaiman Hj Dand of Malaysia, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein and officials, arrived in Mandalay yesterday morning.

Mandalay Division Agriculture Services Manager U Aung Kyin and officials reported to the delegation on cultivation and production of summer paddy and monsoon paddy at Mya Nanda Advanced Farm in Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Division.
 

The Malaysian Minister and party visited Sein Myint Traditional Arts Work.

(12) 10 members resign from Chauk Township NLD

YANGON, 16 May - Ten members resigned from National League for Democracy of Chauk Township, Magway Division.

Seven members of Chauk Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Chauk Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 23 February 1999, and three members followed suit on 6 April 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(13) 54 members resign from Chaungzon Township NLD

YANGON, 16 May - Fifty-four members resigned from National League for Democracy of Chaungzon Township, Mon State.

Fifty-four members of Chaungzon Township NLD, Mon State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Chaungzon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 15 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
