(1)  General Maung Aye inspects hydro-electric power station of Zawgyi Reservoir in Yaksawk

YANGON, 15 May - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, members of the ministers, Deputy ministers and officials, left Bahtoo for hydro-electric power station of Zawgyi Reservoir by helicopter on 14 May.

The station is situated in Indaw Village, 28 miles north of Yaksawk.

General Maung Aye and party inspected concrete embankment and feeding structure.

Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut and Project Manager U Ba Si reported on the work in progress.

The General and party inspected chart showing power to be generated from two turbines, hydel-power generators and the master control room. The General gave instructions.

Zawgyi Reservoir Hydroelectric power project is being implemented for irrigation and power generation.

The station has two six-megawatt turbines and operation started on 13 October 1998. It is supplying power to Aungthabye sub-power station through Zawgyi-1 station.

(2)  Secretary-1 receives former Defence Attache of Bangladesh

YANGON, 15 May - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received former Defence Attache of the People's Republic of Bangladesh to Myanmar Maj-Gen Ruhul Alam Chowdhury (Retired) at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence today.

Also present together with the Secretary-1 were Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet, Director-General of Political Department U Nyunt Maung Shein and Head of Department of the Office of Strategic Studies Col Thein Swe of the Ministry of Defence.

(3)  Secretary-1 attends prize presentation ceremony of Singapore Association of Myanmar Golf '99

YANGON, 15 May - The prize presentation ceremony of the Singapore Association of Myanmar SAM Golf '99 was held at Sedona Hotel this evening, attended by Chairman of Myanmar National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Patron of Singapore Association of Myanmar Ambassador of Singapore Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow extended greetings.

Ambassador Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow presented K 1.5 million donated by Singapore Association of Myanmar for health activities in Myanmar to the Secretary-1.

The Secretary-1 thanked the donor.

The Singapore Ambassador presented prizes to winners.

(4)  Minister meets high-level economic delegation of Thailand

YANGON, 15 May - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel met a high-level economic delegation led by Chairman and CEO of Charoen Pokphand (CP Group) Mr Dhanin Chearavanont who called at his office this morning.

They discussed economic matters based on agriculture and bilateral cooperation between Myanmar and Thailand in income promotion of those who are engaged in agriculture, and livestock breeding.

Present at the call were officials of departments concerned.

In the evening, Minister Brig-Gen Abel hosted dinner at Karaweik Palace in honour of the Chairman and party of CP Group of Thailand.

(5)  Brunei, Myanmar sign MoU on Bilateral Cooperation in Information, Radio and TV

YANGON, 15 May - A ceremony to sign a memorandum of understanding on bilateral cooperation in information, radio and TV between Government of the Union of Myanmar and Government of Brunei Darussalam was held at Myanmar Radio and Television on Pyay Road this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were Special Adviser to the King of Brunei Darussalam and Minister of Home Affairs Mr Pehin Dato Haji Isa Ibrahim and officials, Deputy Minister for Information of the Union of Myanmar Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Myanmar Pengiran Dato Asmalee Ahmad, Managing Director U Tin Kha of News and Periodicals Enterprise, Managing Director U Than Maung of Printing and Publishing Enterprise, Managing Director Col Bo Kyi of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise, directors of MRTV officials, Head of Office of the ministry U Khin Maung Myint and guests.

Special Adviser to the King of Brunei Darussalam and Minister of Home Affairs Mr Pehin Dato Haji Isa Ibrahim and Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein signed the MoU and exchanged documents.

(6)  USDA CEC member tours Taungtha, Myingyan

YANGON, 15 May - Member of Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Chairman of Myingyan District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ye Swe and officials, paid homage to Kyaungthit Kyaungtaik Sayadaw U Kumara of Vicitralankara Taikkyaung in Taungtha Township yesterday morning.

Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung and wife Daw Khin Khin Yi donated robes and provisions to 42 members if the Sangha there.

The minister and wife donated 200 bags of rice for 36 monasteries to Chairman of Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sundra.

The USDA CEC member inspected computer room and rooms for Multi Media Classroom at Basic Education High School in Taungtha.

In the afternoon, USDA CEC member U Aung Thaung and wife and well-wishers donated K 2 million to Taungtha Home for the Aged Supervisory Committee.

He inspected Taungtha Township Hospital. Then, he presented rewards to doctors and nurses. The CEC member met industrial entrepreneurs at Mani Kinsana Hall in Myingyan Township. He inspected the embankment linking Myingyan with Layeindan Village.

(7)  Minister receives Thai economic delegation

YANGON, 15 May - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung received the economic delegation led by Chairman Mr Dhanin Chearavanont of CP Group of Thailand at his office at 11.30 am today.

Also present on the occasion were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(8)  Myanma Ceramics Industries, Mitsubishi sign contract

YANGON, 15 May - A ceremony to sign a contract on renovation of Kyangin Cement Plants by Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan and Myanma Ceramics Industries of the Ministry of Industry-1 was held at the Ministry of Industry-1 this morning, attended by Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun.

Managing Director of Myanma Ceramics Industries U Than Shwe and Director U Myint Thaung and General Manager Mr Masahide Konishi and Mr Shuho Yamanokuchi of Mitsubishi Corporation signed the contract.

Also present on the occasion were Director-General U Tin Hlaing, Col U Thein Maung and managing directors under the ministry.

(9)  Delegates from ASEAN countries leave for home

YANGON, 15 May - Ministers and delegates from ASEAN member countries who attended the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting left here by air today for home.

Secretary for Labour and Employment of the Philippines Mr Bienvenido E Laguesma, Minister of Human Resources Dato Lim Ah Lek of Malaysia and party, Secretary-General Mr Soewarto of Department of Manpower of Indonesia and party, delegates of Singapore and Brunei and Minister of Labour and Social Welfare of Thailand Mr Sompong Amornvivat and party left here by air today.

They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of Working Committee for hoisting the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Minister for Transport U Pe Than, diplomats, heads of department and officials.

(10)  40 members resign from Padaung Township NLD

YANGON, 15 May - Forty members resigned from National League for Democracy of Padaung Township, Bago Division.

Forty members of Padaung Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Padaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 16 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11)  58 members resign from Mongphyat Township NLD

YANGON, 15 May - Fifty-eight members resigned from National League for Democracy of Mongphyat Township Eastern Shan State.

Fifty-eight members of Mongphyat Township NLD, Eastern Shan State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mongphyat Township Multi-party Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 9 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12)  Ministers of ASEAN countries visit Hlinethaya City of Industry, Mingaladon Industrial Park

YANGON, 15 May - Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr Rodolfo Severino Jr, ministers of ASEAN member countries and high ranking officials who attended the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting together with Chairman of Central Committee for hosting the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Work Committee for hosting the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein and officials arrived at the National Museum on Pyay Road at 9.45 am today.

They were welcomed by Director-General of Department of Cultural Institute U Myint Thein Swe and officials who conducted them round the museum.

Then, Minister for Labour, Invalid and Social Welfare of Vietnam Ms Nguyen Thi Hang and Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr Rodolfo Severino Jr signed in the visitors' book at the museum.

They proceeded to Myanma Gems Museum on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road and were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein and officials of Myanma Gems Enterprise who conducted them round the museum.

Then, they went to Hlinethaya Industrial City where they were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Director-General of Human Settlement and Housing Development Department Col Tin Tun and officials.

At Kanaung Hall, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint extended greetings and Director U Win Myint reported to the guests on works being carried out by Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development in Yangon.

The Secretary-General and party visited the Shoe Factory of Tairi International Company Ltd where they were welcomed there Managing Director Daw Sanda Aye reported to the countries.

The Secretary-General and party visited the Electric Wire Factory of Myanmar Sigma Cable Co Ltd and Director Chin Kim Hai greeted them in the factory.

Director Chin Kim Hai explained about the production of cable to the guests.

They also visited FMI Padaythabin Myodaw in Hlinethaya Industrial City and Mingaladon Industrial Park. Managing Director Mr Toshio Komiyama of the park explained about the works being carried out in the park and Managing Director of Zaykaba Co Ltd U Khin Shwe on construction of single units, international golf resort and Mingaladon Garden City.

Minister for Labour, Invalid and Social Welfare of Vietnam Ms Nguyen Thi Hang and Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr Rodolfo Severino Jr signed in the visitors' book and left there in the afternoon.
