1.  Tatmadaw must keep up training, military vigilance and be ready for battle; Members must have military, political, economic and administrative outlooks

YANGON, 14 May - The Graduating Parade of the 101st Intake of the Army Officers' Training School (OTS) was held at the parade ground of OTS in Bahtoo Tatmyo this morning.

On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye delivered an address.

After inspecting the companies of graduating cadets, General Maung Aye took the salute of the graduating company.

On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye presented Silver Sword, the Best Cadet Award to Cadet Nyi Nyi Aung.

On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, General Maung Aye made a Speech. In conclusion, the General said the Tatmadaw is discharging the three main tasks-national defence, training and welfare tasks-without fail. The Tatmadaw must be qualified to implement these tasks effectively. Thus, the Tatmadaw is able to discharge the national defence duties and to safeguard the sovereignty for its perpetuation and the nation from breaking up. Good training will uplift the skill and the will to obey the discipline, ensuring combat victory. Tatmadaw members will win more trust of the people by participating in welfare activities. These are the fine traditions of the Tatmadaw.

The nation is depending on the Tatmadaw which is taking the duties for her progress. The nation will develop as expected only when the Tatmadaw has qualifications and brilliant leadership abilities. Today's Tatmadaw leaders must try to possess not only the military outlook but also the political, economic and administrative outlooks.

The Tatmadaw members must always have in mind seriously to conduct good training and possess military awareness and combat readiness.

Afterwards, General Maung Aye left the Parade Grounds.

2.  General Maung Aye arrives Bahtoo Tatmyo

YANGON, 14 May - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief General Maung Aye left here by Tatmadaw flight yesterday afternoon for Heho, Shan State (South).

Then, General Maung Aye and party together with Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo left there by helicopter for Bahtoo in Yawksawk Township where they were welcomed by Tatmadaw officers.

YANGON, 14 May - On behalf of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman, Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Minister of Home Affairs of Brunei Mr. Peahen Data Hag Sa Abraham, Minister of Social Welfare and Labour of Cambodia Mr Th Smashing, Secretary-General Mr So wart of Department of Manpower of Indonesia, Minister of Labour and Social Welfare of Laos Mr Sampan Phone Whammy, Minister of Human Resources Data Lm Ah Elk of Malaysia, Secretary for Labour and-Employment of the Philippines Mr. Bienvenido E Laguesma, Minister of State for Manpower of Singapore Mt Ottoman Harmon Ruse, Minister of Labour and Social Welfare of Thailand Mr. Stomping Amornvivat, Minister for Labour, Invalid and Social Welfare of Vietnam Mr. Nguyen Hi Hang and Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr. Rodolfo C. Severino Jr. who will attend the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting, at Dragon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defense at 10.30 am today.

Also present together with the Secretary-1 were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

4.  Secretary-1 attends opening ceremony of 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting

YANGON, 14 May - The opening ceremony of the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting was held at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road at 9 am today with an opening address by Patron of the Central Committee for Hosting the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, Chairman of the Central Committee for Hosting the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe and central committee members, the Chief Justice, the Attorney General, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor, ministers of ASEAN Countries - Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr. Rodolfo C. Severino Jr., high ranking officials, Chairman of Work Committee for hosting the 13th ASEAN Labor Ministers' Meeting Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, the deputy ministers, senior Tatmadaw officers, Ambassadors of ASEAN countries, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, local and foreign journalists led by Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, members of Work Committee for hosting of the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting, corespondents of Kyodo and AFP news agencies and guests.

Daw Moe Thida Htwe of Myanma Radio and Television acted as master of ceremonies.

First, Patron of the Central Committee for hosting the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an opening address.

After the opening ceremony, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt posed for souvenirs photo together with Chairman of the Central Committee for hosting of the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, ministers of ASEAN member countries and Secretary-General of ASEAN.

5.  Secretary-1 hosts dinner in honour of ministers of ASEAN member countries

YANGON, 14 May - Patron of the Central Committee for hosting the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted dinner in honour of the Secretary-General of ASEAN and ministers and high ranking labour officials of ASEAN member countries and guests, who attended the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting, at Karaweik Palace at 7 pm today.

The dinner was also attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee and Mayor, Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr Rodolfo C. Severino Jr., labour ministers of ASEAN member countries-Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, high ranking officials, Chairman of Work Committee for hosting the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, the deputy ministers, senior Tatmadaw officers, Ambassadors of ASEAN member Countries, heads of department and guests.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Secretary-General of ASEAN presented flower baskets to the cultural troupe of Karaweik Palace.

6.  13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting (ALMM) concludes

YANGON, 14 May - The 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting (ALMM), hosted for the first time by the Union of Myanmar, began at the Traders Hotel at 11.30 am today.

Present at the meeting were Chairman of Central Committee for Hosting of 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, ministers from ASEAN member countries which are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Singapore, ASEAN Secretary-General Mr Rodolfo C. Severino Jr., ambassadors of the embassies of ASEAN members countries, senior labour official delegates from ASEAN members countries, Chairman of Working Committee for Hosting of 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein and departmental officials.

Minister of Labour, Invalid and Social Welfare of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Ms Nguyen Thi Hang, who presided over the 12th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting, extended greetings.

Leader of Myanmar delegation Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe was elected as the Meeting Chairman and Secretary for Labour and Employment of the Philippines Mr Bienvenido E Laguesma as the Meeting Vice-Chairman and Assistant Director of the ASEAN Secretariat Mr Cho Kan Sin as technician. Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe delivered an opening address.

The participants approved the meeting agendas and work programmes.

Afterwards, ministers and leaders of the labour delegations of the ASEAN member countries gave speeches. Then, they discussed the decisions approved by the ASEAN Senior Labour Officers' Meeting, implementations of decisions approved by the 12th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting, Draft Joint Communiqué to be submitted to the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting, holding for 14th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting hosted by the Philippines from 8 to 12 May in the year 2000 and other matters.

After the meeting, leaders of the labour delegations and ministers had documentary photo taken.

7.  Deputy Prime Minister receives GM of Zarembo Invest SA

YANGON, 14 May - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received General Manager (International Investment) of Zarembo Invest SA of Panama Mr Robert Locher and party who called at his office at 10.30 am today.

Also present at the call were officials of Government Office and MIC Office. They discussed investment situation being undertaken by Thilawa Cement & Building Materials Ltd in Myanmar.

8.  Minister for Health leaves for Conf in Geneva

YANGON, 14 May - Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein left here by air this morning for Switzerland to attend the 52nd World Health Conference to be held from 17 to 25 May in Geneva, Switzerland.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Religious Affairs Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai, Ambassador of Singapore Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow, Resident Representative of World Health Organization Dr Klaus Wagner, heads of department and officials of the Ministry and their relatives.

The delegation includes Secretary of National Health Committee Director-General of Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe, Director-General of Medical Science Department Dr Kyaw Myint, Rector of Institute of Medicine-1 Dr Myo Myint, Director of Health Department U Khin Tun and Director of Foreign Relations Department of Ministry of Health Dr Ohn Kyaw.

9.  Opium seized in Waingmaw, Township

YANGON, 14 May - Thirty-three packets of opium weighing 28.7 kilos were seized from a white van by a team comprising Myitkyina Anti-Drug Squad, Regional Defence Services Intelligence and Waingmaw Police Station in Waingmaw Township on 1 May evening.

The authorities, acting on the information, stopped and searched the car near Khashi Village, Waingmaw Township. Driver of the car was Kan Oo (a) U Kyi Soe and three passengers were Ma Aye Thi, Zaw Tan and Zaw Aung.

In connection with the seizure, action is being taken against Ma Aye Thi, who was arrested, and other three, who are absconding.

10.  Communications systems demonstrated

YANGON, 14 May - The technical demonstration of communications systems presented by Datang Telecom Technology Co Ltd of the People's Republic of China was held at Communications and Postal Training Centre of Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications at Lower Pazundung Road this morning.

It was attended by Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Managing Director of Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications U Maung Maung Tin, heads of departments, engineers of Datang Telecom Technology Co Ltd and engineers of MPT.

Engineer of Datang Co Mr Tran Li extended greetings.

11.  53 members resign from Tatkon Township NLD

YANGON, 14 May - Fifty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Tatkon Township, Mandalay Division.

Fifty-three members of Tatkon Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Tatkon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 21 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
