(1)  Secretary-1 inspects Tiger Parahita School in Hline Township

YANGON, 13 May - Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected Tiger Parahita School for Development of National Races of Department for development of Border Areas and National Races under the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs on Railway Station Road in Hline Township this evening.

First, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt cordially met the students.

Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Brig-Gen Than Tun reported to the Secretary-1 on history and formation of the school and Director-General of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Col Wunna Maung Lwin on numbers of students, condition of buildings and academic matter.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt fulfilled the requirements.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected lecture halls and hostels at the school.

Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party paid obeisance to Padana Nayaka Sayadaw of Tiger Parahita School Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Pandita and offered alms to the Sayadaw.

The Secretary-1 and party then left there in the evening.

(2)  Deputy Prime Minister receives Ambassador of Sweden

YANGON, 13 May - On behalf of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun received Ambassador of Sweden Mrs Inga Eriksson Fogh who had completed her tour of duty, at Dagon Yeiktha of Ministry of Defence at 3 pm Today.

Present on the occasion together with Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun were officials of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

(3)  Labour ministers arrive for ASEAN Meeting

YANGON, 13 May - Labour ministers from ASEAN member countries arrived here by air this morning and evening to attend the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting to be held on 14 and 15 May.

They are Minister of Home Affairs of Brunei Mr Pehin Dato Haji Isa Ibrahim, ASEAN Secretary-General Mr Rodolfo C Severino Jr, Minister of State for Manpower of Singapore Mr Othman Haron Eusofe, Minister of Human Resources Dato Lim Ah Lek of Malaysia, Minister for Labour, Invalid and Social Welfare of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Thi Hang, Minister of Labour and Social Welfare of Thailand Mr Sompong Amomvivat, Secretary-General Mr Soewarto of Department of Manpower of Indonesia, Minister of Social Welfare and Labour of Cambodia Mr Ith Samheng,  Minister of Labour and Social Welfare of Laos Sompane Phong Khammy, Secretary for Labour and Employment of the Philippines Mr Bienvenido E Laguesma and delegations.

The ministers and dignitaries were welcomed at Yangon Intentional Airport by Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, ambassadors and embassy staff, Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of Protocol Department and officials.

(4)  Over 3.4m stimulant tablets seized at Lashio

YANGON, 13 May - Over 3.4 million amphetamine tablets were seized at a check point near Lashio, Shan State (North), in a case in which two men were also arrested.

A combined group comprising members of Defence Services Intelligence and Myanmar Police Force found the tablets in a false bottom of the floor of a Condor light truck on 30 April while they were searching cars passing through Yebu Check Point.

A detailed search made by the authorities had exposed the WY brand pink colour amphetamine tablets in possession of the two traffickers - Mala @ Zaw La, 28, son of U Zaw Tu, of Ward 6, Pansai, who was at the wheel, and Win Hlaing @ Aik San @ Lauk San, 43, son of U Yan Swe Lin, of Ward 5 Lashio, who was a passenger.

Amphetamine tablets were put in 1,705 canisters each containing 2,000 tablets.

Action has been taken against the two according to law.

(5)  Minister meets delegates of 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting

YANGON, 13 May - Chairman of Central Committee for hosting of 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe met Minister of Home, Affairs of Brunei Darussalam H E Pehin Dato Haji Isa Ibrahim, who will attend the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting, at Toungoo Hall of Traders Hotel at 1.30 pm today.

Secretary-General of Department of Manpower from Indonesia Mr Soewarto, who will attend the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting, called on Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe at Toungoo Hall of Traders Hotel at 2.15 pm today.

Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe also met Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr Rodolfo C Severino Jr, who will attend the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting, at Toungoo Hall of Traders Hotel at 3 pm today.

Also present together with the minister were Chairman of Forking Committee for holding of 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein and heads of department.

(6)  UDNR opens 1 June

YANGON, 13 May - Regular classes of University for Development of National Races for 1999-2000 academic year will be opened on 1 June 1999.

Students who will attend the regular classes-primary teachership courses, one-year junior teachership course and one-year B.Ed course should arrive at UDNR in the last week of May.

YANGON, 13 May - People's Republic of Bangladesh Defence Services Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Muhammed M Rahman and wife arrived here by air this morning to pay goodwill visit here.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife hosted dinner in honour of Bangladesh Defence Services Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Muhammed M Rahman and wife at Karaweik Palace in the evening.

(8)  Minister for Cooperatives meets delegates leaving for Kunming

YANGON, 13 May - Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San met delegates of cooperative societies who will take part in Kunming Trade Fair 99 at the Ministry of Cooperatives this afternoon.

The trade fair will be held in Kunming, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China, from 6 to 10 June.

Present on the occasion were Director-General of Cooperative Department U Maung Hti, Director-General of Cottage Industries Department Dr Than Htaik, General Manager U Myo Than and officials of Cooperative Export and Import Enterprise, officials, officials of Yangon Division Cooperative Department.

Deputy Director U Kyaw Hlaing explained arrangements for participation in this year's Kunming Trade Fair.

A total of 67 delegates from 19 cooperative societies will attend the trade fair and jewellery, gems and jade wares, silver wares, mother of pearls and handicraft.

YANGON, 13 May - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel met economic delegation led by National Assembly Member of Republic of Korea Mr Han Young Chung at his office at 3 pm today.

YANGON, 13 May - Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt met with the delegation led by Professor Mr Kaneko of Japan at his office this afternoon.

(12)  Minister meets Ambassador of Malaysia and Honorary Consul of Lebanon

YANGON, 13 May - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Muhammad Bin Noh who called at his office at 1.30 pm today.

Similarly, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Honorary Consul of Lebanon to Myanmar Mr Elie J Debahy who called at his office at 2.30 pm today.

Also present at the calls were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Managing Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials.

YANGON, 13 May - Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin met technician for Y2K problem of JODC (Japan Overseas Development Corporation) Mr Fumuio Ohwaki who called at his office at 12.30 pm today.

YANGON, 13 May - Chairman-of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay received Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Muhammad Binnoh who called at his office this morning.

(15)  Myanmar delegation leaves for Japan

YANGON, 13 May - Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin left here by air this evening for Japan to study the implementation of agriculture and rural projects of Japan at the invitation of Chairman of Agriculture Development Advisory Committee of Japan Mr Saburo Okabe.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai and departmental officials.

The minister was accompanied by Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Thein Zaw, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Service U Tun Than, Director-General of Irrigation Department U Myo Myint and Director of Agricultural Planning Department U Tin Htut Oo.

(16)  Boxing, golf tourneys to be held

YANGON, 13 May - The 30th Inter-State and Division Boxing Championship sponsored by Myanmar Boxing Federation will be held from 19 to 28 May at Aung San Gymnasium.

Admission is K 50 per head. The 21st Inter-State and Division Golf Tourney will be held from 25 to 28 May at Yangon Golf Club.

(17)  65 members resign from Sedoktara Township NLD

YANGON, 13 May - Sixty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Sedoktara Township, Magway Division.

Sixty-five members of Sedoktara Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Sedoktara Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 9 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
