(1) Call to strive for success of import substitution industries Endeavor to stand on one's own without relying on outside

YANGON, 12 May - Chairman of the State Peace Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected dam projects and industries in Bago Division yesterday and today.

Accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council ministers and officials, the Senior General arrived at Wegyi Creek Dam Project in Paungde Township yesterday morning.

At the briefing hall of the project, the Senior General and party heard a report on points of the project which is being implemented on Wegyi Creek one mile upstream Phaung-aing village in the township presented by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin.

The Senior General gave guidance. He then inspected maps of the project and its scale-model. He presented gifts to service personnel of Construction 2 of Irrigation Department who are undertaking the project through Director U Tin Maung Ohn.

The Senior General and party observed progress in implementing the project from the stage. They also had an aerial view of the project from helicopter.

The earth dam will be 115-foot high and 4,170-foot long. It will irrigate 45,000 acres of mixed-crops and double-crops in the area.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation has constructed 13 reservoirs and diversion dams in the eastern sector of Bago Yoma and eight reservoirs and diversion dams in the western sector.

The Senior General and party flew by helicopter to No 1 Farm Machinery Factory of the Ministry of Industry-2 at Hsinde in Padaung Township.

On arrival at the factory, they were welcomed by Deputy Minister U Thein Tun and officials.

It has plans to built 14 more reservoirs in the eastern sector and eight more in the western sector.

Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and Deputy Minister U Thein Tun reported on progress of work at the factory and implementation concerning the guidance given by the Senior General during his previous visit and Factory Manager U Kyaw Kyaw oil the capital, production aims, production capacity, distribution and income of the factory and research work.

The Senior General gave guidance and inspected the mill.

Ninety-eight per cent of the work of the project has been completed.

The Senior General and party arrived back here from Pyay by Tatmadaw aircraft at 3 pm.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, ministers, Commander of No 66 LID Brig-Gen Aung Min and officials met with industrialists in Pyay.

Local authorities and industrialists reported on developments and requirements.

Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung and Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin replied to the queries.

The Secretary-2 and party also inspected the Government Technical Institute in Pyay.

This morning, the Secretary-2 met with members of Bago Division Peace and Development Council, division level officials and local authorities.

(2) Government is giving encouragement to transport sector to bring about national development, community peace and tranquillity

YANGON, 12 May - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met departmental officials of the Ministry of Transport this morning and discussed targets of the ministry for 1999-2000 fiscal year.

Managing Director of Inland Water Transport U Tun Aung Myint, Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay, Managing Director of Myanma Shipyards U Percy Maung Maung, Managing Director of Myanma Five Star Line U Khin Maung Kyi and General Manager of Myanma Airways U Phone Maung reported on organizational set-up, functions, strength of service personnel, work undertaken and project to be implemented for 1999-2000.

The Secretary-l spoke on building of roads under the arrangement of border areas development programme toward consolidation of national solidarity, border trade and tourism, promotion of water transport and building of roads and bridges in Rakhine, Kayin and Mon States and Taninthayi Division, extension of runways, airports and terminal buildings in air transport, upgrading of Yangon Airport to meet international standard and construction of Mandalay International Airport and Hanthawady International Airport.

(3) Secretary-1 receives Charge d' Affaires ai of US

YANGON, 12 May - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Charge d'Affaires ai of United States of America Mr Kent M Wiedemann at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 11 am today.

Also present together with the Secretary-l were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and officials.

(4) Secretary-1 receives Ambassador of PRC

YANGON, 12 May - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Ambassador of People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10 am today.

Also present together with the Secretary-1 were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and officials.

(5) Deputy Prime Minister meets Chairman of Golden Glory Company

YANGON, 12 May - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin met Chairman of Golden Glory Company Mr Low Kim Yong and party who called at his office at 4.30 pm today.

Also present at the call were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office and Secretary of MIC Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials of MIC Office.

(6) Senior labour officials of ASEAN member countries meet

YANGON, 12 May - Senior Labour Officials Meeting for the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting took peace at Traders Hotel this morning.

It was attended by Assistant Director of ASEAN Secretariat Mr Cho Kan Sin and senior officials of ASEAN member countries-Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Director-General U Sein Myint of Labour Department, leader of Myanmar delegation, acted as chairman at the meeting and Under-secretary for Labour and Employment Ms Rosalinda D Baldoz as deputy chairman and Mr Cho Kan Sin as technician.

Giving a speech on the occasion, U Sein Myint said it was the first time for Myanmar to hold such a meeting and extended greetings to delegates from ASEAN member countries including new member Cambodia on behalf of the ministry.

The results achieved from the present meeting will be carried up to the ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting, he said and expressed his belief that all participants should proceed at the meeting with mutual understanding and in the spirit of ASEAN brotherhood.

Afterwards, the participants adopted an agenda and made business arrangements.

The meeting adopted the report of the 6th Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-committee on Labour.

The participants took part in discussions on cooperation of ASEAN member countries in economic, social and cultural affairs and health and education activities, matter, related to the ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting and ILO's action on labour affairs.

The meeting continues tomorrow.

(7) Victorious Myanmar bodybuilding and taekwondo teams arrive back

YANGON, 12 May - Myanmar victorious Bodybuilding team led by Chairman of Myanmar Body Building and Physical Culture Federation Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung arrived back here by air from Thailand yesterday after taking part in the III South-East Asia Bodybuilding Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 8 to 9 May and Myanmar victorious Taekwondo team led by EC of Myanmar Taekwondo Federation U Lay Tin also arrived back here by air from Hanoi the same day after taking part in the International Invitational Taekwondo Competition held in Hanoi, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, from 6 to 9 May.

(8) Toshiba Centre opened

YANGON, 12 May - A ceremony to open Toshiba Centre was held at 170/176 in Bo Aung Kyaw Street in Botahtaung Township this morning.

Then, Minister Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Ambassador of Singapore Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow and Managing Director of Toshiba Asia & Pacific Pte Ltd Mr A Kawabata formally opened the Centre.

Managing Director of Toshiba Singapore Pte Ltd Mr T Kanaoka and Chairman of Golden Glory Industries Ltd Mr Low Kim Yong pressed the button to unveil the signboard of Toshiba Centre.

Dinner was held at Summit Parkview Hotel to mark the opening of Toshiba Centre this evening.

Officials made a donation to Jivitadhana Sangha Hospital and departments.

(9) National Workshop on Precursor Control for Chemical Industry begins

YANGON, 12 May - National Workshop on Precursor Control for the Chemical Industry sponsored by Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control of Myanmar and UNDCP was held at Hotel Equatorial on Alanpya Pagoda Road this morning.

It was attended by CCDAC Member Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Secretary Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and UNDCP Project Coordinator Precursor Control in East Asia Project Mr Wong Hoy Yuen.

Cooperation of chemical companies, government organizations, control and disciplinary units in preventing precursors used in making drugs and psychotropic substances moving from legal trade into illegal trade will be discussed.

(10) Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs meets

YANGON, 12 May - Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs held a co-ordination meeting on health care for aged hailing the Intentional Day for Aged was held at Social Welfare Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 9 am today.

Daw May May Yi delivered an opening address. The meeting ended with the decision.

Members of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs and doctors of Women Group of MMA will care for aged persons from Home for the Aged in Yangon on 29 May hailing the International Day for Aged.

(11) MPT to issue new stamps

YANGON, 12 May - Myanma Posts and Telecommunications MPT issuing high-valued definitive stamps will sell a new K 30 stamp on 17 May at State Division/District/Township post offices beginning 9.30 am.

As a special programme for stamp collectors, First Day Cover, Maximum Card and key change bearing post stamp will be sold at Yangon and Mandalay General Post Offices and FDCs and MCs be canceled.

Those in other cities may contact Yangon GPO or 01-285477 or Mandalay GPO or 02-21506 to buy them.

MPT will continue to issue K 50 and K 100 stamps with the design of Myanma musical instruments.

(12) Gambling, heroin gang exposed

YANGON, 12 May - The authorities exposed Laygaungyin gambling and heroin pushing gang in North Okkalapa Township and arrested the gang leader and gangsters with heroin weighing 493.49518 g, K 1.2 million, proceeds from heroin sales, one car used in pushing heroin and 46 items of club, knife, spear and harpoon. On 27 April, acting on the information, a team comprising Defence Services Intelligence members, South Okkalapa Township Myanmar Police Force members and Ward Peace and Development Council members arrested Win Oo, son of U Kyaw Aye, of 358, 8th Street, Ward 10, South Okkalapa, who came to the junction of Thanthuma and Gandama Streets to buy heroin, with 25.66488 g of heroin.

On further investigation, the authorities raided the house of Thein Win, leader of the gang, at 202, Thumitta 6th Street, Ward 1, North Okkalapa, found 166.20398 g of heroin, K 1.2 million, proceeds from heroin sales, Toyota Super-roof 5 Kagyi/ 4866 and the weapons and arrested Thein Win.

The authorities also arrested Thura Win (a) Thura, son of U Nyo Win, of 203, Thumitta 7th Street, North Okkalapa, with 3.00416 g of heroin at his residence and one Khin Cho Cho (a) Ma Cho with 298.62216g, of heroin on PanUyin Street, Ward 5, Mayangon Township.

Those who participated in heroin sales together with Thura and Ma Cho were also arrested by the authorities. They are Thagyi (a) Zaw Win Tun, son of U Tun Win of 202, Thumitta 6th Street, North Okkalapa, Tun Thein (a) Kyeegan, son of U Tun Khin, of 42, Chanthapyison Street, Ward 5, Mayangon Township, Myint Aye, son of U Po Kyi, of 128, Shwebonpwint Dhammayon Street, Mayangon Township, Aung Aung Myint (a) Aung Gyi, son of U Hla Myint, of 182, Thumitta 6th Street of Ward 1, North Okkalapa, Kyi Lwin, son of U Aye Kyi, of 249, Thumitta 6th Street, Ward 1 North Okkalapa, Thiha Tun (a)Thiha, son of U Thaung Nyunt, of Thumitta 4th Street, North Okkalapa Effective action will be taken against the ten under the law.

(13) 27 members resign from Twantay Township NLD

YANGON, 12 May - Twenty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Twantay Township, Yangon Division.

Nine members of Twantay Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Twantay Township Multi-party Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 16 March 1999 and eighteen members followed suit on 30 April 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
