YANGON, 10 May - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected Swa Creek Reservoir Project in Yedashe Township Yesterday.
The Senior General and party proceeded to Swa Creek Reservoir Project being implemented on Swa Creek near Baungtoak Village in Yedashe Township by helicopter.
The Senior General and party were welcomed there by Deputy Commander of Southern Command Brig-Gen Thura Maung Ni and officials.
In the briefing hall of the project, the Senior General heard a report by Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin on the location of Swa Creek Reservoir and acres of fields which can be irrigated on completion of the project.
Director-General of the Irrigation Department U Myo Myint reported on implementation of the project and progress of work.
Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party went to No 2 Basic Education High School in Toungoo, and met Headmaster U Tun Kyi and teaching staff.
The Secretary-2 said that basic education schools will soon be opened; duties are to be divided systematically among the teachers and they need to call out renovation and repair of school buildings and furniture and works for keeping environs of the school clean and pleasant.
Members of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Soe Tha, Col Thein Nyunt and U Thaung, accompanying the Senior General met secretaries, executives and members of Bago Division, Toungoo District and Toungoo Township USDAs in the meeting hall of Southern Command at 8.30 pm.

(2) ASEAN Steering Committee holds meeting 1/99
YANGON, 10 May - ASEAN Steering Committee held its meeting 1/99 at the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) this morning with an address by Chairman of ASC Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
The Secretary-1 said members of ASC should know and understand the discussions, agreements and announcements made at the Sixth ASEAN Summit which was held in Vietnam in December 1998 to implement them in accord with the nation's policy.
As Cambodia has become a member of the ASEAN the association's original objective all 10 South-East Asian countries to become ASEAN members has been fulfilled.
Experts skilled in the respective fields should be sent to take part in the subjective wise meetings on ASEAN for the benefit of the nation and the region.
He expressed hope that ministries will be skilled in their respective subjects as Myanmar has now passed a certain period as an ASEAN member, speaking of the need to make efforts for consequential implementation of the resolutions concerning the ASEAN.
Active participation is required in basic-level and subject-wise discussions to make correct resolutions at the ASEAN Summit, he stressed.
Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung explained the Sixth ASEAN Summit, the ceremony to accept Cambodia as a new member and other meetings which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had attended and Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel economic affairs discussed at the ASEAN Summit, formation of ASEAN Services Subcommittee and the ASEAN economic meetings. Other ministers and deputy ministers joined in the discussions.
In his concluding address, the Secretary-1 stressed the need to make efforts for speedy implementation of tasks Concerning the ASEAN. Hosting of meetings on ASEAN will enhance experiences and the opportunity to show in nation's true conditions.

(3) Secretary-1 attends coordination meeting on goodwill and cooperation between Myanmar and Lao PDR
YANGON, 10 May - A coordination meeting on goodwill Myanmar and Lao was held at the meeting hall of Office of Commander-in-Chief (Army) of the Ministry of Defence this afternoon, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Also present on the occasion were the ministers, the chief of the deputy minister and officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council and officials.
The Secretary-l said Myanmar and Lao maintain goodwill relations according to historical traditions, adding that Head of State Senior General Than Shwe paid a goodwill visit to Lao and the President, the Prime Minister and the Party General Secretary of Lao also visited Myanmar.
Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung reported on the agreements of mutual visit of delegations between the two countries, agricultural and irrigation, forest, livestock and fisheries, trade, tourism, communications, mineral, education, culture and information, labour and social welfare, judicial, youth, religious and home affairs sectors, anti-narcotic drugs campaign and goodwill and cooperation.
Those present took part in the discussions.
The Secretary-1 then gave instructions on speedy implementation of works.

(4) ESCAP's 55th Anniversary meeting in Bangkok
YANGON, 10 May - Myanmar delegation led by Ambassador to Thailand U Hla Maung attended the 55th Anniversary meeting of Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) held in Bangkok from 22 to 28 April.
The delegation members are Minister Counsellor U Nyan Lin, Counsellor U Ngo Kho Paung and First Secretary U Tun Myint.
Leaders of the delegations made their speeches. Ambassador U Hla Maung also delivered an address on 26 April. In his address, the ambassador spoke at length on development on political, economic and social sectors, use of E-mail and Internet in information technology in Myanmar according to global and regional changing conditions and achievements in environment.
He said Myanmar is implementing the anti-narcotic project as the national duty and achievements have been made in it.
He called for cooperation at State, regional and global levels in anti-narcotic campaign.

(5) Sixth Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Labour Affairs held
YANGON, 10 May - The Sixth Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Labour Affairs was held as a preliminary meeting for the 14-15 May 13th ASEAN, Labour Ministers Meeting at Traders Hotel today.
It is the first time for Myanmar to host the ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting. Present at the meeting were Secretary General of the Ministry of Human Resources of Malaysia Dato' Zainol Abindin B Abd Rashid, Assistant Director of the ASEAN Secretariat Mr Cho Kah Sin, and members of the Sub-Committee from ASEAN members- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam - and the ASEAN Secretariat, and high-ranking labour officials.
Meeting chairman Mr Thapabutr Jamasevi of Thailand made a speech.
After the meeting had approved the agenda, discussions were held on the cooperation among ASEAN members for economic, social, cultural, health, educational and human resources development, actions to achieve political and economic stability and overcome the problems and difficulties, and ILO matters.
The meeting continues tomorrow.

YANGON, 10 May - Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung signed the Book of Condolences at the Royal Nepalese Embassy at 2.30 pm today in memory of the late Mr Manmohan Adhikari, former Prime Minister and the President of Nepal Communist Party (UML).

YANGON, 10 May - At the invitation of Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Ministry of Hotels and Tourism left here this morning by air for Macau, to attend Seminar on education of the first Asia and the Pacific Region Tourism Service and the second Executive Committee Meeting, sponsored by Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and World Tourism Organization (WTO) to be held in Macau from 11 to 14 May.

(8) Donations for renovation of ancient pagodas in Bagan
YANGON, 10 May - A ceremony to donate K 800,000 for renovation of ancient pagodas in Bagan by Ambassador of Myanmar to Thailand U Hla Maung-Daw Thanda Khin and embassy staff was held at Ministry of Culture on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.
Minister for Culture U Win Sein accepted the donations.

(9) Minister inspects Gas Plant, Match Factory, Biscuit Factory
YANGON, 10 May - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung inspected No 1 Gas Plant on Thanlyetsun Road in Botahtaung Township this morning.
The minister inspected lathes, warehouses, production of acetylene, the crasher for calcium carbide and gas containers to be repaired.
The gas plant distributes oxygen, nitrogen and acetylene gases to hospitals, ministries and industries.
The minister proceeded to No 2 Match Factory on Upper Pazundaung Road in Setsan, Mingala Taungnyunt Township. He inspected production of the factory and gave instructions on innovation and production of qualified matches. Afterwards, the minister inspected paper production of the factory.

(10) Chief justice meets state, division judges
YANGON, 10 May - A coordination meeting on administration of justice was held at the Supreme Court today.
Present at the meeting were Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Supreme Court Justices, the director-general, directors, advisers, deputy directors, and state and division judges.
In his address, Chief Justice U Aung Toe said that in accord with the system of administration of justice promulgated in 1988, the courts at various levels have to pass judgement judiciously and promptly, and that the purpose of the meeting was to review the tasks.
He urged all those present to discuss judicial, legal and administrative matters, construction of buildings, requirements, and future plans.
A general round of discussions followed.

(11) Law officers urged to strictly follow directives and laws
YANGON, 10 May - The 15th work coordination meeting between the Attorney-General and law officers of states and divisions was held in the meeting hall of the Attorney-General's Office this morning.
Present at the meeting were Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Vice-Attorney-General U Khin Maung Aye, Director of Attorney-General's Office Dr Tun Shin, directors, deputy directors, law officers of states and divisions and the Head of the Attorney-General's Office.
Law officers need to do their duties in accord with the law, and they are also to strictly follow directives and laws in giving legal advice before sending the cases to the court and prosecuting the cases; it is necessary for them to be well-versed in law and to be qualified.
Then, the law officers of states and divisions reported on their works.

YANGON, 10 May - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Miyako Taxi Co Ltd Mr Tadamitsu Tsutsui of Japan donated 30 wheelchairs to Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
On behalf of Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, officials of the Office of Strategic Studies, presented 15 wheelchairs worth K 600,000 to Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein at Medical Research Department on Ziwaka Road this afternoon.
The minister presented a certificate of honour to them. Also present on the occasion were officials of the Ministry of Health and the Office of Strategic Studies.

(13) Myanmar bodybuilding team wins two golds, three silvers, one bronze
YANGON, 10 May - The selected Myanmar bodybuilding team took part in the III South-East Asia Bodybuilding Championship in Bangkok, Thailand, from 8 to 9 May.
Aung Naing won a gold medal in 60-kilo Class Zaw Thein Naing also won a gold medal in 75-kilo Class.
Naing Win Aung, Win Lwin and Tun Tun Oo won a silver medal each in 55-kilo Class, 60-kilo Class and 65-kilo Class respectively. Naing Lin won a bronze medal in 90-kilo Class.
Khin Maung Htwe was fourth in 70-kilo Class, Saw Ko Ko Aung fifth in 70-kilo Class and Min Zaw Oo fifth in 80-kilo Class. Myanmar team secured second in the championship.
Altogether 64 bodybuilders from Singapore, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand took part in the championship.

YANGON, 10 May - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung met with President Mr Li Zhiming of Complant Group, President Mrs Zhang Lianju of Complant Yunnan Co and party together with officials of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China at his office this afternoon.
Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Thura U Thaung Lwin, Managing Director of Myanma Railways U Kyaw Hsan, Director-General of Transport Planning Department U Aye Mu and Head of Office U Hla Myint.

(15) 190 members of Thakayta Township NLD resign
YANGON 10 May - One hundred and ninety members of National League for Democracy of Thakayta Township, Yangon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to the party concerned and to the Township Multiparty Democracy Election Commission as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
A ceremony to collectively present letters of resignation by 190 members of Thakayta Township NLD, Yangon Division, was held at Thakayta Township Peace and Development Council Office on 7 May 1999.
On behalf of the party members, U Htay Myint and U Nwe Oo explained the
reasons, followed by presentation of resignations to Chairman of Township
Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Kyaw Kyaw Win.
