(1) Secretary-l gives guidance on implementation of plans for Ministry of Forestry

YANGON, 9 May - Secretary-l of the State Peace and development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt made a speech at the coordination meeting on implementation of the projects of the Ministry of Forestry for the 1999-2000 financial year at the International Business Centre of Myanma Timber Enterprise today.

The Secretary-l spoke on plantation of forest and tree for conservation of forest resources and natural environment and organizing the people for participation in forest conservation and dissemination of use of firewood substitute fuel, producing of new generation forest experts and timber extraction experts and conducting research for forest development.

He cited that there was less rain in the whole country compared to those of previous time and it is necessary to seek ways and means for solving that from the point of view of forest.

The Secretary-l urged staff of the ministry and all service personnel to strive for emergence of a genuine sovereign State free from influence of others in the world and to discharge their main duties with clear national outlook and strong national determination for national development.

In conclusion, he also urged them to implement the tasks in accord with the motto, to endeavor to be financially strong through forest sector, to conserve forest resources, to implement objectives on greening of arid zone, to make efforts for promotion of export and to conduct research widely and to make systematic arrangements for producing forest experts.

(2) BEMS-8, Hline, gets new school building

YANGON, 9 May - A ceremony to hand over and open a new school building of No 8 Basic Education Middle School in Hline Township was held at the school this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. The new building was constructed by Aye Yeik Mon Housing Project which is jointly implemented by the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development under the Ministry of Construction and Olympic Company Ltd.

(3) Secretary-1 attends opening of Pencil and Cosmetic Factory

YANGON, 9 May - The inauguration ceremony of Pencil and Cosmetic Factory of Myanmar Tokiwa Corporation was held at the factory in Pyinmabin Industrial Zone, Mingaladon Township this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt pressed the button to unveil the signboard of the factory.

Then, Minister for Education U Than Aung and President of Tokiwa Corporation Mr Naoyuki Jeff Soga formally opened the factory.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected the operation of the factory.

Later, the opening ceremony of the factory was held at the briefing hall of the factory.

President of Tokiwa Corporation Mr Naoyuki Jeff Soga spoke on the occasion.

He said the opening of Pencil and Cosmetic Factory is a milestone in economic cooperation between Myanmar and Japan.

After receiving the permits to run the factory within one year, Yangon and Mandalay factories were running with full capacity, he said.

A total of $ 7.2 million was invested in the factories project and totaling over 400 workers were appointed in the factories, he said. The factory will produce 100 million pencils year.

President of Tokiwa Corporation Mr Naoyuki Jeff Soga presented 12,000 dozens of pencils to Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt for Myanmar Education Committee.

Then, Minister for Education U Than Aung spoke words of thanks.

Afterwards, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt signed in the visitor's book.

(4) Myainghaywun Condominium, AWB Branch and Supermarket opened

YANGON, 9 May - Myainghaywun Condominium, Mayangon Bank Branch of Asia Wealth Bank and Junction 8 Supermarket were opened at Myainghaywun condominium building on Kyaikwaing Pagoda Road in Mayangon Township this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint said although the project site was owned by the government, there were squatters in successive periods, adding most of the buildings were of low standard.

He spoke on implementation of Myainghaywun Garden Housing Project including 6 six-storey eight-unit buildings, one four units and 40 single unit and 14-storey-Myainghaywun Condominium.

Vice-Chairman U Aik Tun reported on implementation of work.

The Secretary-l and party visited the condominium. The Junction 8 Supermarket including 13 stalls was build at a cost of  K one billion.

(5) Japanese well-wishers donate pianos, electronic organs

YANGON, 9 May - Japanese well-wishers Mr Jimbo Keiichi and wife Mrs Yuko, and Mr Matsuoka Takashi presented nine pianos and four electronic organs valued at K 50 million to the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

The donation ceremony took place at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street yesterday.

Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, and Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt made speeches.

Mr Jimbo Keiichi spoke about the donation.

(6) Khin Swe Oo, Soe Soe Mar win golds

YANGON, 9 May - Ma Khin Swe Oo of selected Myanmar Taekwondo team won a gold in Pinweight Class of the International Invitational Taekwondo Competition held in Hanoi, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, from 6 to 9 May.

She beat the athlete of Hanoi-Vietnam 5-0 in the first match, that of China 1-0 in the second match and that of Vietnam 2-1 in the third match.

In Flyweight Class, Ma Soe Soe Mar also won a gold after beating Malaysia 3-2 and Hong Kong 7-0. She beat Vietnam 5-3 in the final match.

Teams of 10 countries took part in the competition.

(7) Products of garment factories introduced

YANGON, 9 May - Fashion show on clothes manufactured by Myanmar garment factories today took place at Traders Hotel in conjunction with the clarification of Fashion 1st programmes by Myanmar DHL Ltd that would help exporters.

It was co-sponsored by Myanma Posts and Telecommunications and Myanmar DHL Ltd.

Present on the occasion were officials of departments and garment factories under the Ministry of Industry-l and private garment factories.

(8) USDA CEC member tours townships in Shan State (North)

YANGON, 9 May - A ceremony to open organization camp of Holi Village Union Solidarity and Development Association, Kunlong Township, Kunlong District, Shan State (North), was held at the venue on 4 May evening

The CEC member formally opened the building and presented TV, VCR, magazines and books on USDA Code of Conduct and brooches to the officials.

The chairman of Village-tract Peace and Development Council spoke words of thanks.

USDA CEC member Minister Col Tin Hlaing, accompanied by secretaries and EC members of state, District and Township USDAs, toured Nawnghkio, Hsipaw, Kyaukme, Tangyan, Mongyai, Lashio, Kutkai, Muse, Kunlong and Hopang Townships in Shan State (North) from 1 to 7 May.

He met organizers and members of USDA and gave necessary instructions. He presented magazines and brooches to them and fulfilled their
requirements.

(9) ASEAN delegates arrive

YANGON, 9 May - Representatives of ASEAN countries-Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Socialist Republic of Vietnam and those of ASEAN Secretariat arrived here by air today to attend the 6th ASEAN Sub-Committee on Labour Affairs Meeting to be held from 10 to 11 May in Traders Hotel and Senior Labour Affairs Meeting (SLA) to be held from 12 to 13 May there before the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting.

The 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting will be held from 14 to 15 May.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by departmental officials.

(10) Interested persons to contact to attend ASEAN-CCI Meeting

YANGON, 9 May - The union of Myanmar Federation Chambers of Commerce & Industry will hold ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting at Sedona Hotel from 25 to May. The federation will hold ASEAN-CCI Business Forum with co-sponsorship of the Secretariat of ASEAN-CCI and Hanns Seidel Foundation and ZDH Partnership Programme at the same venue on 26 May.

It will be attended by ASEAN member countries, economic entrepreneurs and economists from the partnership countries of ASEAN and guests, totaling about 250.

(11) Over 30 kilo of heroin seized in Kunlong

YANGON, 9 May - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force searched a car driven by Whan Kyin Shu, 22, son of U Kyu Kyi Shin, at Kaungkha check point in Kunlong on 25 April.

The team seized 93 blocks of heroin weighing 30.411 kilograms from the car.

Action is taken against Whan Kyin Shu under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(12) 184 members resign from Yamethin Township NLD

YANGON, 9 May - One hundred and eighty-four members resigned from National League for Democracy of Yamethin Township, Mandalay Division.

Twenty-two members of Yamethin Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending Letters of resignation to Yamethin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 18 January 1999 and 30 members and 132 members followed suit on 19 January 1999 and 20 January 1999 respectively as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(13) 11 members resign from Pathein Township NLD

YANGON, 9 May - Eleven members resigned from National League for Democracy of Pathein Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Eleven members of Pathein Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pathein Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 20 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party Politics of NLD.
