(1)  Secretary-1 attends coordination meeting on holding of 17th meeting of Health Ministers of South East Asia regional countries of WHO

YANGON, 8 May - A coordination meeting on holding of the 17th meeting of Health Ministers of South East Asia regional countries of World Health Organization was held at the meeting hall of Medical Research Department on Ziwaka Road this afternoon, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

It was also attended by the ministers, the deputy ministers, the Vice-Mayor, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads and officials.

The Secretary-1 noted that in fact Myanmar is the most Peaceful and secure nation. He said as the saying goes "Seeing is believing", more foreign visitors are to arrive in Myanmar to witness the true situation and disseminate the correct news.

Chairman of Central Committee for Holding of Meeting Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein reported on matters relating to holding of the 17th meeting of Health Ministers of South East Asia regional countries and Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo on requirements.

Those present took part in the discussions.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the Secretary-1.

(2)  Secretary-1 pays homage to trainee members of Sangha of First Summer Dhammacariya Course

YANGON, 8 May - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Aung Myay Bawdi Yeiktha Alodawpyi Kyaungtaik (Yangon) on Tamwaylaywin, Shwenyaung Street in Tamway Township at 2.30 pm today and they were welcomed by Director-General of Religious Affairs Department U Arnt Maung and officials.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party paid homage to Alodawpyi Sayadaw Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Pariyattihitadhara Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party also paid homage to members of the Sangha who were attending the First Summer Dhammacariya Course sponsored by Aung Myay Bawdi Yeiktha Alodawpyikyaungtaik (Yangon).

Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party also paid homage to course instructor Sayadaw Bhaddanta Susittabhivamsa and left there.

A total of 380 members of the Sangha and 85 nuns are attending the one month course.

(3)  Active participation of MWEA in national development laude Fourth annual meeting of Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs Association held

YANGON, 8 May - The fourth annual meeting of Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs Association for 1998-99 was held at Yuzana Garden Hotel on Alanpya Phaya Road this evening, with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife, the ministers and their wife's, the deputy ministers and their wives, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials, members of Panel of patron of MWEA, members of Advisory Board, Chairperson Daw Sein Sein and EC members and guests.

The Secretary-1 said Myanmar women social association consisting of Myanmar brilliant women in economic sector came into being and holding of the fourth annual meeting of MWEA represents honourable and dynamic capabilities of the entire Myanmar women as well as formation of a force to be relied on development of economic life of the State.

As is known to all, the State Peace and Development Council is building a nation based on genuine strength of national force on self-reliance for fulfilling social foundations of food, clothing and shelter needs of the national people and development in keeping abreast in the nations at the world he said.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged the association to strive for prosperity of the nation through outstanding performance of women's entrepreneurs dealing in economic sector, to make efforts for ensuring uplift of socio-economic life of Myanmar women and improvement of efficiency of the entire Myanmar women, to make efforts to preserve the traditional culture and safeguard the lineage so that Myanmar girls will be aware of destructive elements which cause influence of foreign culture to Myanmar girls, to achieve prosperity of MWEA which stands magnificently and to make more efforts in the interest of the State and the people.

Afterwards, MWEA Patron Agga Maga Thirithuddhama Theingi Daw Hse and Chairperson Thiha Thuddhama Theingi Daw Sein Sein spoke.

Secretary Daw Nu Nu Yi presented the annual report for 1998-99 to the meeting.

Retired professor Daw Yi Yi Myint, founding member and member of the advisory board of the association, reported on the association.

(4)  Shwehtidaw, Seinphudaw hoisted atop Dhamma Theikdi (Kalaihtaw) Pagoda in Mingaladon

YANGON, 8 May - The Htidaw hoisting and the consecration ceremony of Dhamma Theikdi (Kalaihtaw) Pagoda in Htaukkyant in Mingaladon Township was held at the pandal of the pagoda this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Joint-Secretary Sayadaw of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Candima of Meiktila administered the Nine Precepts. Members of the Sangha recited the parittas.

Patron of the Committee for Renovation of the Dhamma Theikdi (Kalaihtaw) Pagoda Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han supplicated on the history and renovation of the pagoda.

(5)  Myanmar to host 13th Labour Meeting 14-15 May

YANGON, 8 May - Myanmar will host the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting on 14 and 15 May at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road.

It will be the first time for Myanmar to host the meeting.

The meeting will be held in accordance with the main objectives of the ASEAN which are: to promote the economic, social and cultural development of the region through cooperation programme; to safeguard the political and economic stability of the region against big power rivalry; to serve as a forum for the resolution of the intra-regional differences.

Before holding the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting, the Sixth Meeting of ASEAN Sub-Committee on Labour Affairs (ASCLA) will take place at the same venue on 10 and 11 May and the Meeting of Senior Labour Affairs on 12 and 13 May.

The meetings will be attended by members of ASCLA high-ranking labour officials and ASEAN labour ministers of ASEAN member countries-Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam-and the Secretary General of ASEAN.

(6)  Air Chief Marshal of Royal Thai Air Force, wife and delegation conclude visit

YANGON, 8 May - Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan of Royal Thai Air Force and wife Mrs Khunying Phannee Niamtan and delegation left here by air this evening at the end of goodwill visit here at the invitation of member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than.

Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and wife Daw Khin Swe Nyunt met Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan of Royal Thai Air Force and wife Mrs Khunying Phannee Niamtan at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 6.45 pm today.

(7)  Air Chief Marshal of Royal Thai Air Force, wife visit Hlinethaya Industrial City

YANGON, 8 May - Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan of Royal Thai Air Force and wife Mrs Khunying Phannee Niamtan and delegation, currently here at the invitation of member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, visited Hlinethaya Industrial City this morning.

They, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and officials, went to Shoes Factory of Tai Yi International to Ltd in Hlinethaya Industrial City and were welcomed by Managing Director U Sein Oo and officials who conducted them round the factory.

Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan signed in the visitors' book.

Managing Director U Sein Oo presented souvenirs to Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan and wife Mrs Khunying Phannee Niamtan.

The Air Chief Marshal and wife and part then arrived at Garment Factory of Myanmar Apparel Co Ltd and Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan signed in the visitors' book at the factory.

Afterwards, they visited Housing Project of FMI Padaythabin City and left there in the evening.

(8)  Public Works, China Shipbuilding Trading sign contract to buy bridge frames

YANGON, 8 May - The Public Works signed a contract with China Shipbuilding Trading Co Ltd at the Head Office of Public Works yesterday afternoon to purchase bridge frames for Minchaung Bridge Project.

Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun made a speech on the occasion.

Deputy Managing Director (Works) U Thant Zin of Public Works and Mr Zhang Wanbai signed the contract and exchanged the agreed notes.

(9)  World Red Cross Day observed

YANGON, 8 May - The World Red Cross Day was observed at the Institute of Nursing on Bogyoke Aung San Street toady with the sponsorship of Myanmar Red Cross Society.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, departmental heads, chairmen and officials of social organizations, diplomats, resident representatives of the UN agencies in Myanmar, Resident Representative of the International Red Cross Committee Mr Leon de Riedmatten, Resident Representative of the Federation of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Associations Mr Floyd Barnaby, members of MRCS Central Council, President of MRCS Dr Kyaw Win and CEC members, members of Yangon Division Red Cross Supervisory Committee, chairmen of Township Red Cross Societies, outstanding Red Cross youths and well-wishers.

(10)  Special Refresher Course for Primary Teachers in Border Areas of UDNR concludes

YANGON, 8 May - The Special Refresher Course for Primary Teachers in Border Areas of University for Development of National Races concluded in Pinlong Hall of the university yesterday morning, with an address by Chairman of the Council of UDNR Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win.

Chairman of the University Council Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win delivered an address.

He urged the trainees to discharge their duty to preserve good conditions already achieved and safeguard national sovereignty.

In conclusion, he said the trainees who attended the course of UDNR are not only teachers for academic courses but also organizers for development of Union spirit.

(11)  Minister inspects excavation of glazed kilns in Twantay

YANGON, 8 May - Minister for Culture U Win Sein, accompanied by Adviser to the Archaeology Department Dr Myo Thant Tin, ancient glaze expert for Asian countries Mrs Virginia Damdicroco and officials, inspected excavation of Kyaukphyasan ancient glazed kilns near Kangyikon Village, Twantay Township, this morning.

The minister and party inspected maintenance of the bank of Twantay Canal, Hsutaungpyay Yoakson Pagoda and ancient glazed kilns in the compound of U Chit Pu in Zawti Village.

Minister U Win Sein paid obeisance to Maungtee Pagoda renovated by Archaeology Department in San Village.

(12)  2.98 kilos of heroin seized in Muse

YANGON, 8 May - According to information that drug trafficking would take place at map reference P-178997 in Muse Township, Shan State (North), on 13 April, a combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Tatmadaw member, combed the area and stopped the two suspects men at map reference P-190995. But the two men escaped and left 11 packets of heroin weighing 2.98 kilos kept in a rucksack.

Action is taken against ownerless heroin under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(13)  64 members resign from Myittha Township NLD

YANGON, 8 May - Sixty-four members resigned from National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division.

Sixty-six members of Myittha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 22 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(14)  46 members resign from Myeik Township NLD

YANGON, 8 May - Forty-six members resigned from National League for Democracy of Myeik Township, Taninthayi Division.

Forty-six members of Myeik Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myeik Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 15 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
