YANGON, 7 May - Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt made a speech at the Seminar on Promotion of Basic Education Sector (Phase II) at the Central Institute of Civil Service in Hlegu Township today.
In his address, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said that for modernization of Myanmar
education standard as well as for development of the education system to nurture
human resources required for building a peaceful, modern and developed nation in
accord with the political, economic and social objectives. the first Phase of
the seminar was held at the CICS on 11-16 May 1998, and the participants
discussed the matters to their heart's content.

(2) Secretary-1 attends Red Cross get-together dinner
YANGON, 7 May - Dinner was hosted in honour of the get-together of outstanding Red Cross youths at Myanyilar Hall of Basic Education High School No 2 in Latha Township at 6.30 pm today, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
The dinner was also attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Tatmadaw officers.

(3) Secretary-2 attends opening of Computer Exposition
YANGON, 7 May - The opening ceremony of "Yangon International Computer Exposition '99" sponsored by Office of the Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute of the Ministry of Defence was held at Tatmadaw Hall on U Wisara Road this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Ministers U Thaung and U Than Aung and in-charge of the exposition U Win Naing Oo formally opened the "Yangon International Computer Exposition '99".
U Win Naing Oo explained about the Exposition '99 and U Min Zeya Hlaing of Eagle Group Co Ltd extended the greetings.
Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, ministers and party inspected the Exposition '99.
Altogether 41 local computer companies and Eagle Group Co Ltd displayed the computer exhibitions and modern computer news communications.
Computer experts and computer technicians will talk about the computer technology with the help of audiovisual aids.
The Exposition '99 will display from 9 am to 5 pm until 9 May.
Admission is free.

(4) Heroin seized in Sangyoung, Kamayut Townships
YANGON, 6 May - A combined team comprising regional intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force seized 73.89 kilos of heroin from Aung Naing, son of U Khin Maung Win, of Wailuwun Housing Complex-1, on Hanthawady Road Sangyoung Township, on 17 April.

Likewise, another combined team consisting of regional intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force seized 33.88 kilos of heroin from Daw Khin Nyein, aged 50, daughter of U Nyi Nge, of Sikauk Village, Pyinmana Township, on Ohntaw Phaya Street, No 5 Ward, Kamayut Township, on 24 April.
The police stations of respective townships have taken action against the two according to Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(5) 947 members of resign from Kyauktan Township NLD
YANGON, 7 May - A ceremony to submit resignations of 947 members of Kyauktan Township National League for Democracy, Yangon Division, was held at the monastery of Kamakaloak Village in Kyauktan Township yesterday morning.
A total of 947 members of NLD in Kyauktan Township who were 116 members from Kamakaloak Village, 302 from Chaungwa Village, 150 from Pandaw Village, 102 from Zwebakondan Village, 91 from Ywathitgale Village, 86 from Meepya Village, 60 from Zwegana Village, 15 from Kuhni Village, 13 from Bawgalut Village and 12 from Thanatpin Village, of their own volition, notified letters of resignations to the party concerned as they no longer wish to participate in the party politic of NLD.
On 6 May morning, a ceremony to submit resignations of the members of NLD was held at the monastery of Kamakaloak Village in Kyauktan Township.
U Han Tun of Kamakaloak Village and U Hsan Lwin of Zwebakondan Village explained the reason and handed over the letters of resignation to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Lu Maw.

(6) Armed Forces Day Literary and Art Competitions and Exhibition Organizing Committee reviews tasks
YANGON, 7 May - The Committee for Organizing the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Literary and Art Competitions and Exhibition held a review meeting at the Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute, attended by Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo. He called for discussions on the experiences in organizing the competitions and exhibition and future plans.
Chairman of the Committee for Organizing the Literary and Art Competitions and Exhibition Chief of Staff (Air) Brig-Gen Myint Swe reported on the previous competitions and exhibition and the needs to be fulfilled.
Chairman of the Work Committee for Organizing Literary and Art Competitions Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein spoke about the preparations for the competitions, and plans for the future competitions.
Later, officials reported on various tasks carried out for organizing the competitions and exhibition.
Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave suggestions on publishing of record books by respective Committees.

YANGON, 7 May - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met President of Myanmar Tokiwa Corporation of Japan Mr Naoyuki Soga and party who called at his office at 2.30 pm today.

(10) Talks for outstanding Red Cross youths
YANGON, 7 May - Talks for outstanding Red Cross youths from States/Divisions who are attending the get-together of outstanding Red Cross youths for 1999 were held at Basic Education High School No 2 in Latha Township, this morning.
In the morning session, Professor Dr Than Myint gave talks on first aid and Joint-Secretary-2 Daw Khin Win Kyu of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association on MMCWA.
Secretary of Yangon Division Union Solidarity and Development Association U Aye Myint gave talks on objectives and future works of the USDAs, Dr Tin Tin Nwe of Yangon General Hospital on aids to respirations and Professor Dr May Mya Win of Sanpya Hospital on prevention of snake's danger in the afternoon session.
Myanmar Red Cross Society issued the Red Cross journal to mark the get-together of outstanding Red Cross youths for 1999 and World Red Cross Day which falls on 8 May.

(11) Commander opens medical seminar in Pathein
YANGON, 7 May - A ceremony to open first medical seminar of Myanmar Medical Association (Pathein branch) was held at Division General Hospital in Pathein yesterday morning.
The commander made an opening speech.
Patron of Pathein branch Dr U Bo Kywe explained about the seminar.
The commander and the patron of Pathein branch formally opened 39 medicinal sale rooms.
The seminar will continue on 7 May.

(12) Donations for renovation and Htidaw hoisting of ancient pagodas in Bagan
YANGON, 7 May - The donation ceremony for renovation of ancient pagodas and hoisting the Htidaw of Setanagyi Pagoda in Bagan was held at Ministry of Culture, on Kaba Aye Pagoda this afternoon.
Minister U Win Sein accepted the donations.
The donations included K 22.7 million for renovation of pagoda Nos 761, 843, 1094 and 1095, K 10 million for-offering gold plates of Lawkananda Pagoda and K 5 million for renovation of the compound of Hsinbyushin Pagoda donated by Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay-Daw Khin Khin and staff families under the patronage of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, K 13 million for renovation of pagoda No 820 and Mahathera Okkyaung by Singapore Golden Pagoda Buddhist Temple Ven Shi Fa Zhao and disciples, K 3 million by East Wind family, K 1 million by staff family of Engineering Department (Buildings), K 800,000 by Head of Engineering Department (Buildings) U San Tun Daw Dr Daw Aye Aye Nu and family, K 600,000 by minister for Homes and Religious (Retd) Sithu U Ko Ko (Naing-Ngan Gonyi Grade-1)-Daw Mi Mi Khin and family.

(13) 21st Asia-Pacific Junior Golf Championship 1999 concludes
YANGON, 7 May - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win attended the prize presentation ceremony of 21st Asia-Pacific Junior Golf Championship 1999 which took place at Royal City Hotel this evening.
Patron of Organizing Committee for the 21st Asia-Pacific Junior Golf Championship Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay made a speech.
Secretary-General of Asia-Pacific Junior Golf Confederation Mrs Amalia Montecillo also gave a speech.
Mayor U Ko Lay presented gifts to Secretary-General Mrs Amalia Montecillo.
