(1) Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye meets Air Chief Marshal of Royal Thai Air Force

YANGON, 6 May - Vice Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye received Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan of Royal Thai Air Force and delegation at Zeya Thiri Beikhman on Konmyinttha at 2 pm today.

The guests were accompanied by Army and Air Attache of Thai Embassy Col Chaiwat Satondee and officials.

(2) Secretary-1 meets Deputy Foreign Minister of Thailand

YANGON, 6 May - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Deputy Foreign Minister of Thailand Mr Sukhumbhand Paribatra and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 5 pm today.

The guests were accompanied by Ambassador o Thailand to Myanmar M Pensak Chalarak.

(3) Briquettes becoming more popular Producers, distributors urged  to expand market

YANGON, 6 May - The Leading Committee for Organizing Extensive Use of Firewood Substitute Fuel held its meeting No 1/99 at the Forest Department on Bayintnaung Road today, attended by Patron of the Leading Committee Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

In his address, Lt-Gen Tin Oo said that formerly, the firewood substitute fuel utilization committee was just a subcommittee under Myanma Industrial Development Work Committee, and that in order to expedite works, the Leading Committee was formed with the Minister for Forestry as the chairman and ministers of respective committees as members.

(4) Myanmar-Thailand Joint Boundary Committee Fourth Meeting held

YANGON, 6 May - The Thai delegation led by Mr Sukhumbhand Paribatra, Deputy Foreign Minister of Thailand, arrived in Yangon by air this morning to attend the Fourth Meeting of the Myanmar-Thailand Joint Boundary Committee.

In the afternoon, the Thai Deputy Foreign Minister called on Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then attended the Fourth Meeting of the Myanmar-Thailand Joint Boundary Committee held at the ministry. The two delegations led by respective Deputy Foreign Ministers held open and cordial discussions on boundary matters between the two countries.

At the end of the meeting, the two leaders signed the agreed minutes of the meeting.

The Thai delegation leader then paid a courtesy call on Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung at the latter's guest room at the ministry.

Prior to the Fourth Meeting of the Myanmar-Thailand Joint Boundary Committee, the two sides held senior officials meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 4 and 5 May. Senior officials from Thai side were led by Mr Vasin Teeravechyan, Director-General of the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and those from Myanmar side were led by U Nyunt Maung Shein, Director-General of the Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both delegations discussed boundary matters between the two countries in a very open and constructive manner.

Leader of the Myanmar delegation Deputy Foreign Minister U Khin Maung Win hosted a dinner for the Thai delegation at Karaweik Palace in the evening.

(5) Meeting held to coordinate holding of ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting

YANGON, 6 May - Chairman of the Panel of Patrons of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than addressed the coordination meeting on holding ASEAN-CCI 56th Council Meeting in Yangon in the meeting hall of the federation on Merchant Street this afternoon.

The minister spoke of holding the meeting on a grand scale, and added that working committees need to work hard in making necessary preparations.

He also called on officials concerned to provide assistance for the guests from abroad, and stressed the importance of cooperation among working committees.

President of UMFCCI U Win Myint, Vice-President U Htain Win and Secretary U Zaw Min Win reported on arrangements being carried out for holding the meeting.

The minister gave instructions on preparations for the meeting.

(6) First-aid capability, military parade drills competitions of outstanding Red Cross youths held

YANGON, 5 May - The opening ceremony of the 1999 World Red Cross Day commemorative first-aid capability and military parade drills competitions of State/Division Red Cross brigade members and outstanding Red Cross youths was held in the gymnasium of Latha Township Basic Education High School 1 today.

Executive Director of Myanmar Red Cross Society Col Aung Than made a speech and opened the competitions.

The first-aid capability took place in the gymnasium, and military parade drills competition in the football ground.

President of MRCS Dr Kyaw Win, Executive Director Col Aung Than and officials observe the competitions.

Prizes will be given away to the winners at the World Red Cross Day commemorative ceremony scheduled to be held at the Institute of Nursing on 8 May.

In Myanyilar Hall of Latha BEHS 2 departmental officials gave lectures to them on natural disaster preparedness, relief works, social welfare works, the role of Red Cross  people, and fire prevention measures.

(7) Thailand leading 21st Asia Pacific Junior Golf Championship after third round

YANGON, 6 May - Thailand is leading in the 21st Asia Pacific Junior Golf Championship 1999 being held at Silvery Course of Yangon City Development Committee with 646 strokes after the third round.

Host Myanmar is at the second place with 677 strokes while Chinese Taipei is at the third with the same strokes.

Korea is at the fourth with 677, India at the fifth with 699, Malaysia at the sixth with 707 and the Philippines at the seventh with 712 strokes.

In Boy A Class, Myanmar's Win Htwe Hlaing is at the first with 211 ahead of Thai Ronna Chai who is at the second with 215 strokes after the third round. Other Thai Wisut is at the third with 219.

In Boy B Class, Pron of Thailand is leading with 212 while Choi Jim Ho of Korea is at the second place with 223 and Thai Kittinan at the third with 230.

Among the spectators who watched the third round today were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay, President of Myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and officials.

(8) 57 members resign from Monghpyak Township NLD

YANGON, 6 May - Fifty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Monghpyak Township, Shan State (East).

Fifty-seven members of Monghpyak Township NLD, Shan State (East), of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monghpyak Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 9 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9) UMEHL gems sales on 18 June

YANGON, 6 May - Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited will sell jade and gems on bargain and auction systems on 18 June 1999 at Myanma Gems Mart on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road.

Registered buyers may check the stones to be sold at the 11th Gem and Jade Sale of UMEHL from 13 to 17 June.

Registration fee for local merchants is K 4,000 per head and foreigners US $ 20 per head.

(10) Wife of Air Chief Marshal of Royal Thai Air Force visits Myanma Gems Museum, Women's Development Centre

YANGON, 6 May - Mrs Khunying Phannee Niamtan, wife of Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan of Royal Thai Air Force together with Daw Khin Swe Nyunt, wife of member of State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, and officials arrived at Myanma Gems Museum on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 2 pm today.

They were welcomed by Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo and officials who conducted them round the museum.

Mrs Khunying Phannee Niamtan and party went to Women's Development Centre of Social Welfare Department on Thanlwin Road.

They were welcomed by Vice-Chairperson of Working Committee for Myanmar Women's Affairs Professor Daw May May Yi and officials.

(11) RTAF Air Chief Marshal and wife visit Memorial to Fallen Heroes, Shwedagon Pagoda, Defence Services Museum

YANGON, 6 May - Air Chief Marshal Tananit Niamtan of Royal Thai Air Force and goodwill delegation, visiting here at the invitation of member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, together with Commander of Maintenance Air Base Col Khin Maung Aye, Army and Air Attache of Thai Embassy Col Chaiwat Satondee and officials, visited the Memorial to Fallen Heroes in the afternoon.

The Air Chief Marshal and the delegation laid a basket of flowers and saluted the fallen heroes.

Then, the Air Chief Marshal of Royal Thai Air Force signed in the visitors' book.

The Air Chief Marshal of Royal Thai Air Force and the delegation were conducted around the Memorial to Fallen Heroes by officials.

They later proceeded to the Defence Services Museum.

On arrival there, they were welcomed by Commandant of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut.

The Air Chief Marshal of Royal Thai Air Force signed in the visitors' book and presented a souvenir to Col Ye Htut.

(12) Minister meets Ambassador of Malaysia

YANGON, 6 May - Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met Ambassador of Malaysia Mr Dato Muhammad Bin Noh who called at his office at 1 pm today.

Also Present at the call were Deputy Minister U Aung Thein, Director-General U Kyaw Lwin of Directorate of Livestock and Fisheries, Director-General U Soe Win of Fisheries Department, deputy directors-general and Head of Office U Myint Shwe.

(13)  PRC industrialists meet MIPA members

YANGON, 6 May - Industrialists from the People's Republic of China met with Myanmar counterparts here this afternoon, coordinating means to extend industrial cooperation on mutual basis.

Led by Deputy Director Mr Hu Zuzhen of Foreign Affairs Office of Jinan Municipal People's Government, Shangton Province, they held talks with Central Executive Committee members of Myanmar Industrial Producers Association led by MIPA Chairman U Htein Win.
