(1)  Expenditure on building roads and bridges in Rakhine State greatest in Myanmar

YANGON, 4 May - A ceremony to share merits for donation of Sasana Vipula Ordination Hall was held at Aungmye Bodi Sasana Yeiktha Alodawpyikyaung in Buthidaung Township, Rakhine State on if May, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present on the occasion were members of the Sangha led by Border Areas Missionary Miaha Gandhavacaka Pandita Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Pariyatti Sasana Hitadhara Kamma Htanacariya Alodawpyi Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa, Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, the ministers, the deputy minister the Chief of Staff (Air), senior military officers, departmental officials, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, service personnel, members, of religious and social associations, well-wishers, disciples and guests.

The Secretary-1 and party presented offertories to the members of the Sangha.

Next, Alodawpyi Sayadaw Ariyavamsa delivered a sermon.

The Secretary-1 and party shared merits for donation.

The Secretary-1, the commander, the ministers, deputy ministers and well-wishers offered alms to members of the Sangha who came out of the ordination hall.

The Secretary-1 performed rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected development projects in Buthidaung Township.

They then proceeded to Maungtaw Township.

A cornerstone laying ceremony of Maungtaw MyoU Shwezigon Hsandawmyat Pagoda was held at the pagoda at 9 am.

The Secretary-1 laid the foundation and accepted the donations.

The Secretary-1, the commander and Minister U Thaung laid the stone plaque.

The Secretary-1 and party performed rituals of gold and silver showers.

They then inspected No 1 checkpoint in Maungtaw.

They proceeded to Border Areas Immigration Control Headquarters in Kyeeganpyin Village where they were welcomed by Deputy Head of Border Areas Immigration Control Headquarters U Zaw Thet Naing and service personnel.

Head of Border Areas Immigration Control Headquarters U Thet Htut and officials reported on regional development including stability in the region and prevalence of law and order, immigration in border areas, agriculture and live stock breeding.

Lt-Col Tin Hla Oo reported on cultivation of monsoon and summer paddy, oil crops, beans and pulses and kitchen crops, arrangements for extended acreage for rice sufficiency and availability of water for cultivation, repair of Buthidaung Maungtaw Road, and education and health matters.

After hearing reports, the Secretary-1 said that Head of State Senior General Than Shwe and officials frequently carry out inspection tours of Buthidaung, Maungtaw and Rathedaung Townships and attended to requirements for regional development.

Since the time of the State Law and Order Restoration Council, roads and bridges have been built in Rakhine State, and during the time of the State Peace and Development Council, efforts are being speeded UD to build them.

Accompanied by the commander, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Minbya this morning.

Shwehtidaw hoisting ceremony of Ziwhatawdattaw Pagoda on Kyeintaung (Kalagiri Hill) was held in the compound of the pagoda.

Present to pay respects to 108 Sayadaws led by Alodawpyi Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa were the Secretary-1 and party, local authorities, departmental personnel, members of religious and Social associations, cultural troupes, donors of the Shwehtidaw Maj Naing Htay, Daw Moe Moe Ei and family and members of the board of trustees.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa administered the Nine Precepts.

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented the Seinphudaw And Maj-Gen Aung Htwe the Hngetmyatnadaw to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa.

Sayadaws recited parittas.

The Secretary-1 and party presented offertories to Sayadaws.

At Yangon-Sittway Highway Project, the Secretary-1 heard a report on progress in construction of Min Creek Bridge, Kissapanadi Bridge and Ramaung Bridge, condition of Pitauk, Yaw Creek and Dalet Creek bridges which are ready to open and Yoe Creek, Myaungbwe, Kin Creek and Ohnti bridges-which have already been inaugurated presented by Superintending Engineer U Soe Myint.

Superintending Engineer U Kyaw Tint also reported on completion in asphalt laying of 128 miles of the 202-mile Ann-Sittway section and progress in rock laying.

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave suggestions.

Later, the Secretary-1 and party inspected implementing of town development projects in Sittway.

They also inspected Sittway Hotel. They arrived back here by air from Sittway in the evening.

(2)  Teakteam Ltd opens furniture factory in Hlinethaya

YANGON, 4 May - Teakteam Ltd of Malaysia opened furniture factory in Hlinethaya Industrial Zone section-3 of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, departmental heads, Managing Director of Teakteam Ltd Mr Jorn H Ravn and officials.

Director-General of DHSHD U Arnt Kyaw and Managing Director Mr Jorn H Ravn formally opened the factory.

(3)  Minister inspects No 1 Farm Machinery Factory

YANGON, 4 May - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by departmental officials, arrived at No 1 Farm Machinery Factory at 9th-mile, Pyay Road, this morning.

The minister inspected production process of AMR-99 paddy harvesters of Agriculture Mechanization Department. He also inspected assembling and molding engines and parts, spare parts and bodies.

The AMR-99 harvester is based on engine and some parts made in the Republic of Korea and it is assembled with machine parts and bodies produced by Farm Machinery Factory. It can harvest four acres of paddy in eight hours. One acre of paddy field will be harvested by only one person.

The departments and private farm land reclamation groups purchase the machines.

The minister and party proceeded to Rubber Production Technological Development Department of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise in Mayangon Township. He inspected production and research in personal goods made of rubber and gave instructions on works.

(4)  Information Minister urges staff to follow guidance of Head of State in serving people's interests

YANGON, 4 May - The Ministry of Information held the meeting to review work done in 1998-99 and to coordinate work to be done in 1999-2000 at the office of The New Light of Myanmar Daily this morning, attended by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung.

Head of Office U Khin Maung Myint acted as master of ceremonies at the meeting.

The minister explained the guidance given by the Head of State, gave directives with reference to work in fiscal 1998-99 and work plans for fiscal 1999-2000. In accord with the Head of State's guidance-to exert efforts for the flourishing of the Union spirit to ensure non-disintegration of the Union, non-disintegration of national solidarity and perpetuation of sovereignty-the entire service personnel should live with the Union spirit, he stressed.

Service personnel must practice the three do's and avoid the four don'ts as exhorted by Senior General Than Shwe.

They must always appraise their work for development, to practices thrift, to abstain from abusing authority and to have unity among them, he said.

They should combine the ministry's motto-to inform, to entertain and to impart knowledge-with their ideas in serving the interests of the people.

(5)  Disposable syringes donated to MMCWA (Central)

YANGON, 4 May - A ceremony to donate medicines to Myanmar Maternal and Children Association (Central) by well-wishers Mr Amano and Mr Shiobara of Japan was held at MMCWA (Central) multi-purpose building at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads this afternoon.

Mr Amano and Mr Shiobara presented 3,000 5-ml disposable syringes to Chairperson of MMCWA (Central) Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe. The chairperson presented certificates of honour to them and spoke words of thanks.

(6)  Greater Mekong Subregion Tourism Sector Working Group 9th Meeting begins

YANGON, 4 May - The Ninth Meeting of the Working Group on the Greater Mekong Subregion Tourism Sector began at Inya Lake Hotel this morning.

It was attended by Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Kin Maung Latt, heads of departments concerned and representatives of Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Asia Development Bank and Agency for Coordinating Mekong Tourism Activities (AMTA) and nations in Mekong region.

The programmes on making Mekong region known to the world as tourism centre will be discussed at the meeting which will continue till 5 May. The meeting is hosted by Myanmar, the People's Republic of China (Yunnan Province), Lao PDR, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia in rotation.

(7)  Competitions held to mark Myanmar Mothers and Children's Day

YANGON, 4 May - An essay competition and a storytelling competition to mark Myanmar Mothers and Children's Day were held at the pre-primary school in Tatkon, Mandalay Division, on 30 April.

The children of the pre-primary school performed a variety dance show.

Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Sein Hla and members, departmental personnel, Chairperson of Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association Daw Khin Khin San and members presented prizes to outstanding children.

YANGON, 4 May - Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo met Regional Manager of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Dr B Djermouni who called at his office at 2 pm today. Also present on the occasion were officials of the ministry.

(9)  K 10 m donated for construction of five-storey ordination hall

YANGON, 4 May - Theravada Buddhist Monk Venerable Suwunna of Myaukminsi Temple, Meisai, Thailand donated K 10 million for construction of a five-storey ordination hall for Nikaya Sarthintaik in Ward 26, Dagon Myothit (South), this morning for the third time.

Venerable Suwunna and disciples handed K 10 million to the Secretary-1.

The Secretary-1 also handed alms donated by Mongphone Sayadaw of Tachilek Ashin Nasanvara to the Chairman Sayadaw through Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.

(10)  Minister arrives back after attending Meeting of ADB Board of Governors

YANGON, 4 May - The Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein arrived back here by air this evening after attending the Asian Development Bank Board of Governors' Thirty-Second Annual Meeting held in Manila, the Philippines, from 30 April to 2 May.

(11)  57 members resign from Thaton Township NLD

YANGON, 4 May - Fifty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Thaton Township, Mon State.

Fifty-seven members of Thaton Township NLD, Mon State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Thaton Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 21 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12)  34 members resign from Kyaukse township NLD

YANGON, 4 May - Thirty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kyaukse Township, Mandalay Division.

Thirty-four members of Kyaukse Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyaukse Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 7 April 1999 as they no longer wished to Participate in party politics of NLD.
