(1)  Secretary-1 inspects development projects in Rakhine State

YANGON, 3 May - The Secretary-1 State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt Ministers member and heads of departments and officials, left here for sittway yesterday morning.

The Secretary-l inspected extension of Sittway Airport Terminal.

The Secretary-l and party, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, went to Ponnagyun Township where they were welcomed by members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of USDA and members of Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades and Maternal and Child Welfare Association.A ceremony to hoist Htidaw of Samyondawdat Pagoda and to share merits for donation of Aryongan Tazaung was held at Mingala Mandat near the pagoda.

The Secretary-l and party offered 'soon' to the members of the Sangha.The Secretary-l and party went to Maha Muni Buddha Image in Kyauktaw.

They were welcomed there by Brig-Gen Hla Myint of Kyauktaw Station, officials and families and members of the pagoda board of trustees.The Secretary-l and party paid homage to Maha Muni Buddha Image built by King Sanda Thuriya of Dhanyawady.

The Secretary-l signed in the visitors' book, and donated cash for the pagoda funds.Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa also donated religious and cultural books.Then, the Secretary-l and party visited the Maha Muni Museum.

Afterwards, they released fish at Let-taw-say lake.

Later, the Secretary-l and party went to Kissapanadi Bridge Construction Project at Peinnechaung Village in Kyauktaw Township.

They were welcomed there by members of Township Peace and Development Council, departmental personnel, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross Brigade, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare. Association and Township Women's Affairs Committee, local national people, Deputy Superintending Engineer of the project U Onsaba and employees.

The Secretary-l and party inspected progress of work of the project. At the worksite office, the Secretary-l heard a report by Deputy Superintending Engineer of Special Division-4 of Bridge Construction Project under the Public Works U Onsaba on construction of the main bridge, installation of the iron frame and building of approach road and bridge.

The Secretary-l gave instructions on construction works. Then, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Paletwa.

In the meeting hall of Township Peace and Development Council, the Secretary-l discussed construction of Sittway-Paletwa motor road and development works of Paletwa region with Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, ministers, deputy ministers and officials.

In Kimo Hall at Paletwa, the Secretary-l also met members of Paletwa Township Peace and Development council departmental personnel and USDA members.

Acting Chairman of Paletwa Township Peace and Development Council U Soe Hlaing and officials reported on matters pertaining to availability of water, education, health and installation of telephone lines, power supplied and agriculture.

After hearing reports, the Secretary-l coordinated the tasks with the officials.

(2)  Myitmakha River Bridge linking Ayeyawady and Bago Divisions opened New bridge provides better transport links for people of Ayeyawdy, Bago Divisions

YANGON, 3 May - The Myitmakha River Bridge on Letpadan-Tharawaw-Hinthada Road was inaugurated near Tawthala village, Letpadan Township, Bago Division, this morning.

Linking Bago Division and Ayeyawady Division, the main structure of the bridge is 1,520 feet long, with two 400-foot approach roads, one on Letpadan bank and another on Tharawaw bank.

Built by Special Bridge Group 13 of Public Works, the bridge with a 12-foot wide motorway can withstand up to 36-ton loads. The bridge has two 2.5-foot pedestrian lanes on either side.

Addressing the ceremony, Chairman of the Central Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo said it took time in building the bridge due to changes in the river course. In accord with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, waterways on the river is being developed to ensure speedy and secure transport of passengers and goods along the river.

(3)  Secretary-2 inspects reclamation of wetlands in Bago and Yangon Divisions

YANGON, 3 May - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected reclamation of wetlands being carried out by national entrepreneurs in Bago and Yangon Divisions today.

They inspected progress of work in reclaiming wetlands and cultivation of summer paddy.

In the briefing hall, Managing Director of Myan-naing-myint Agricultural Group U Maung Maung Myint reported on reclamation of wetlands, efforts to cultivate paddy 1,200 acres and requirements.

(4)  Medicinal raw materials and technological development discussed

YANGON, 3 May - A coordination meeting on Myanmar Medicinal Raw Materials and Technological Development was held at Ministry of Industry-l this afternoon.

Minister U Aung Thaung said the meeting is held to discuss matters related to cultivating import substitute medicinal plants and developing production of medicines in accord with the guidance given by the Head of State. Myanma Pharmaceutical Factory is manufacturing 184 kinds of medicines, he added. The ministry is coordinating with local entrepreneurs to build a pharmaceutical factory near Anisakhan in PyiOoLwin, he said. He urged those present to give good ideas for availability of medicinal raw materials.

(5)  Deputy PM receives officials of Japan

YANGON, 3 May - Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun received Chairman of Daimex Inc Mr Takenaga Shunichi and Project Director Mr Akahori of Japan at his office at 10 arm today.

Also present on the occasion were officials of Government's Office.

(6)  Lease of State-owned property explained

YANGON, 3 May - Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung explained lease of State-owned land, buildings, factories and equipment this afternoon at MIC Office.

At the meeting with officials of the respective departments, the minister clarified work procedures and principles in leasing State-owned land, buildings, factories and equipment to local and foreign enterprises and in forming joint-ventures on mutual benefits.

Also present at the meeting were deputy ministers, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises, other officials and personnel concerned of MIC Office.

(7)  Well-wishers donate books to libraries of IPRD
 

YANGON, 3 May - A ceremony to donate various kinds of books for libraries of Information and Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Information was held at IPRD Head Office this afternoon, attended by Deputy Minister for Information Brig- Gen Aung Thein.

The well-wishers explained the purpose of the donations.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein presented certificates of honour to the well-wishers and thanked them.

(8)  Gifts for 2 MH

YANGON, 3 May - Chairman of Board of Directors of Miyako Taxi Co Ltd in Japan Mr Tadamitsu Tsutsui donated 30 wheelchairs to Chairman of Myanmar National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Out of 30 wheelchairs, 15 were handed over to Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han by officials of Office of Strategic Studies, on behalf of Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, at No 2 Military Hospital (500-Bed) at 2 pm today.

Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han presented certificate of honour and expressed words of thanks.

Also present on the occasion were officials of OSS and Directorate of Medical Services.

(9)  Ministry of Education holds review meeting

YANGON, 3 May - A meeting to review tasks and expenditures in 1998-99 financial year and to coordinate the tasks and budget for 19992000 of the Ministry of Education was held in the meeting hall of Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) this afternoon, attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung.
 

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister Dr Than Nyunt, directors-general and chairmen of departments and boards, officials, rectors and principals of universities, degree colleges and colleges and State and Division education officers.

First, Minister U Than Aung gave an opening speech. The meeting ended in the evening.

(10)  First English-English/Myanmar dictionary CD ROM to be launched

YANGON, 3 May - Students' English-English/Myanmar Dictionary published by the Ministry of Commerce will be entered into CD-ROM.

The Ministry of Commerce and Myanmar Inforithm Ltd will launch the first English-English/Myanmar dictionary CD-ROM.

This was decided at a meeting held at the Ministry of Commerce this morning attended by Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint.

Managing Director of Myanmar Inforithm Ltd U Chit Htun Pe explained that users will be able to find definitions of English or Myamnar words easily. Moreover, pronunciations, illustrations and video presentations plus cross-references will be provided, he said.

(11)  52 members resign from Padaung Township NLD

YANGON, 3 May - Fifty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Padaung Township, Bago Division.

Fifty-two members of Padaung Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Padaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 16 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12)  43 members resign from Myeik Township NLD

YANGON, 3 May - Forty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myeik Township Taninthayi Division.

Forty-three members of Myeik Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myeik Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 15 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party Politics of NLD.

(13)  21st Asia-Pacific Junior Golf Championship 1999 opens

YANGON, 3 May - The 21st Asia-Pacific Junior Golf Championship 1999 was opened at the Yangon City Golf Resort (Ngwethawda Golf Club) today.

Later, Chairman of MOC Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win and president of myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen Win Hlaing greeted the managers and golfers of the competing teams.

Brig-Gen Sein Win opened the tournment by striking the smoke ball.
