(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Poland

YANGON, 3 May - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Aleksander Kwasmewski, President of the Republic of Poland, on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Poland which falls on 3 May 1999.

(2)  Secretary-2 attends fourth novitiation ceremony of Thamada Thingantaik

YANGON, 2 May - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the Fourth Novitiation Ceremony of Thamada Thingantaik Family held at Mettawadi Hinthada (Parahita) Kyaungtaik in Ward 16, Hline Township, today.

Altogether 680 Bamars of townships in Yangon Division, 23 Padaungs, 20 Palaungs, 17 Shans, 15 Kayans, 12 Was, seven Kayins, one Chin, one Rakhine and 39 Kayahs, totaling 1,000, were novitiated as novices and monks, at the Fourth Novitiation Ceremony sponsored by Thamada Thingantaik Family.

Afterwards, the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha recited parittas.

Deputy Ministers U Aung Khin and Col Thaik Tun supplicated on religious affairs.

(3)  Minister attends ceremony to admit Cambodia into ASEAN

YANGON, 2 May - At the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Manh Cam, Myanmar delegation headed by U Win Aung, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, visited SRV and arrived back here yesterday, after attending the Admission Ceremony of the Kingdom of Cambodia into ASEAN held in Hanoi on 30 April 1999.

During his stay in Hanoi, Minister U Win Aung together with the Foreign Ministers from other ASEAN countries paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai. He also had bilateral meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Manh Cam, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar and Senior Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia Mr Hor Namhong.

Minister U Win Aung delivered a statement welcoming Cambodia as a full member of ASEAN. He said that with the admission of Cambodia, the vision of the founding fathers of ASEAN to unite ten Southeast Asian nations into one family has been finally fulfilled and that the family has been strengthened and united. As a successful regional grouping ASEAN has an important role to play in regional affairs, while gaining momentum towards a higher-plane of cooperation to face the age of globalization. Myanmar and Cambodia sharing the same religion, culture and traditions enjoy warm and close relations since ancient times, he stated. He concluded by urging all ASEAN countries to work harder in facing the challenges stemming from uneven development of member states and cooperate closely to strengthen the unity and solidarity of the family.

(4)  Mayor arrives back from Singapore, PRC

YANGON, 2 May - Myanmar delegation led by Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay arrived back here by air today after attending the World Conference on Model Cities held in Singapore from 19 to 21 April and the 1999 International Horticultural Exposition held yesterday in Kunming, Yunnan Province, the People's Republic of China.

The delegation was welcomed back at the airport by Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung, Ambassador of PRC and officials.

(5)  Phensedyl seized in Maungtaw

YANGON, 2 May - A combined team comprising members of Defence Services Intelligence Unit, Maungtaw Township Myanmar Police Force and Ward Peace and Development Council, acting on information, searched the house of Ma Da Hla, daughter of U Maung Yin Oo of Datywa Street, Ward 1, Maungtaw, on 18 April evening. They seized 21 100 ml bottles of Phensedyl made in India kept in a box hidden in her house.

According to further information, the authorities found nine 100-ml bottles of Phensedyl hidden under the fuel wood of Ma Ar Zu Ba's house, daughter of U Wa Rip of East Gonna Ward, Shweza Village-tract, Maungtaw, and two 100-ml bottles of Phensedyl hidden underground behind the house of Frenna (a) Eliya, son of Arliamauk of Gonna Village.

Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(6)  Missionary Sayadaw and disciples of Las Vegas offer gold plates to Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 2 May - Sayadaw U Zeyasuta residing in Las Vegas City in the United States of America and his disciples donated 34 ticals of gold plates to Shwedagon Pagoda at a ceremony at Wiponlakari Ordination Hall of Aungzedi Sasanabeikman Kyaungtaik in Insein Township this morning.

Then, disciples of Sayadaw U Zeyasuta presented 34 ticals of gold plates to Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo for Shwedagon Pagoda.

Afterwards, Sayadaw U Zeyasuta delivered a sermon.

(7)  Commander inspects water supply for agriculture

YANGON, 2 May - Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, together with officials, met the chairman and members of Nyaungshwe Township Peace and Development Council and ward and village authorities, departmental personnel and farmers of nearby villages exceeding 500 at Taungpougyi embankment in Nyaungshwe Township on 29 April morning.

He added that as Taungpougyi embankment has been built, monsoon paddy can be cultivated on 2,000 acres of land where cultivation work could not be carried out in the previous rainy seasons; therefore, farmers need to cultivate summer and monsoon paddy without leaving a patch vacant.

(8)  MCF members can apply for computer scholarship courses

YANGON, 2 May - Myanmar Computer Federation today invited applications to attend computer scholarship courses in Japan with the sponsorship of the MCF and the CICC (Centre of the International Cooperation for Computerization) of Japan in January in the year 2000.

The applicants must be, between 25 years and 40 years, graduates of any university and members of Myanmar Computer Federation.

They can apply for the courses not Later than 7 May, and the written test for selection will be held on 9 May.

(9)  Over 1.15m acres of paddy harvested in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 2 May - Ayeyawady Division cultivated summer paddy on 1,411,982 acres against the target of 1,411,727 acres in 1998-99.

A total of 1,159,121 acres of summer paddy or 82.09 per cent had been harvested up to 1 May. Summer paddy in the division yielded an average 73.97 baskets per acre.

(10)  46 members resign from TadaU Township NLD

YANGON, 2 May - Forty-six members resigned from the National League for Democracy of TadaU Township, Mandalay Division.

Forty-six members of TadaU Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to TadaU Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 15 April 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11)  More golfers arrive for 21st Asia-Pacific Junior Golf C'ship

YANGON, 2 May - More golfers from the Philippines, Hong Kong, the Republic of Korea, India and Singapore arrived here by air today to take part in the 4-7 May 21st Asia-Pacific Junior Golf Championship 1999.

The tournament is scheduled at the Ngwethawda Golf Club of the City Golf Resort of Yangon City Development Committee.

The golfers who arrived today included 13 from the Philippines, 10 from Hong Kong, 10 from the Republic of Korea, six from India and two from Singapore.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by officials of Myanmar Golf Federation.
