(1)  54-mega-watt capacity Hlawga Combined Recycle Power Plant opens; Power consumption rises to 750 mega-watts from 330 in 1988

YANGON, 1 May - Hlawga Combined Recycle Power Plant of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise of the Ministry of Electric Power opened in the compound of Natural Gas Power Station and Sub-Main Power Station in Mingaladon Township this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut said eight natural gas power stations and six hydroelectric power stations in main power system generate 680 mega-watts daily, compared to the present power consumption of 750 mega watts to the maximum load of 330 in 1988.

In order to meet the daily power demand, a contract to install 54 mega-watts combined recycle power plant was signed by the government and Marubeni Corporation on 24 March 1997 under the permission of the Government of the Union of Myanmar, he said.

(2)  Damco Wood Products Factory opened, cash donated for construction of school building

YANGON, 1 May - Damco Wood Products Factory of Diamond Mercury Wood Products Ltd was opened in Shwepyitha Industrial Zone this afternoon in conjunction with a ceremony to make cash donations for the Basic Education Department.

The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard of the factory.

Deputy Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Soe Myint, Chairman of Forest Products Joint-venture Corporation U Bo Ni and U Sein Lwin formally opened the factory.

U Sein Lwin explained establishment of the factory and products to be manufactured.

On the occasion, cash donations were made by well-wishers for construction of a new school building for Phayagyi BEHS.

Afterwards, on behalf of the well-wishers, old student U Sein Lwin explained history of Phayagyi Basic Education High School of Bago Division, the purpose of the donation, condition of raising funds and arrangements for construction of school buildings.

(3)  Monetary assistance for in-service disabled Tatmadaw members

YANGON, 1 May - The Ministry of Commerce held a coordination meeting on implementation of tasks in 1998-99 and plans and targets for 1999-2000 financial year was held at the ministry today, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

In his address, Lt-Gen Tin Oo said that among the ministries implementing tasks for national economic development, the role of the Ministry of Commerce is crucial, and spoke of the ministry's accomplishments in the previous financial year.

(4)  Narcotic drugs seized in Shan State (North)

YANGON, 1 May - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Anti-drug Squad led by Officiating Commanding Officer Major Yu Lwin of local battalion, acting on information, found a heroin refinery in the ravine of Panglon mountain range near Monsi Village in Kutkai Township, Shan State (North) on 26 April.

On arrival at map reference P-101494, the combined troops exchanged fire with sentries of the refinery for five minutes and captured two enemies with one M-22. They then combed the surrounding area and seized 15.5 kilos of heroin, 30.20 kilos of opium, 26.95 kilos of brown opium powder, two kilos of ephedrine powder, 225 litres of ether, 450 litres of acid which is being examined, two grenades, one mine, 18 bars of TNT, 107 rounds of M-16 ammunition, 30 rounds of M-22 ammunition and chemicals and a lot of paraphernalia from six plastic tents.

Similarly, a Tatmadaw column led by Tactical Operations Commander Col Tin Tun discharged duty at map reference P-280998 in Kyukok-Pangsai Township, Shan State (North), on 22 April.

They seized about eight kilos of brown opium powder, 675 litres of ether, one litre of hydrochloric acid, 10 bags of lime, chemical and paraphernalia from a building.

The Tatmadaw is resolved to eradicate narcotic drugs as national duty. It destroyed 10 secret narcotic drug refineries in remote area of Shan State from 1 January 1999 till today.

(5)  Commander-in-Chief (Navy) arrives back from Thailand

YANGON, 1 May - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein left here by air for Thailand on 27 April on good-will visit there at the invitation of Commander-Chief (Navy) of Royal Thai Navy Admiral Thira Hao Charen.

Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein and party arrived at Bangkok International Airport at 6.10 pm local time and were welcomed by Assistant Commander-in-Chief (Navy) of Royal Thai Navy Admiral Griangsak Sripum and party.

(6)  Minister meets foreign entrepreneur

YANGON, 1 May - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than met Regional Manager Mr Mario Bernasconi of Asia/Australia of Andre Group, Andre and CIE (Singapore) Pte Ltd who called at his office at 3 pm yesterday.

They discussed economic matters.

Also present at the call were advisers, Director-General U Nyunt Aye of Directorate of Trade, Managing Director U Saw Aung of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading and officials.

(7)  Review meeting of Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development continues

YANGON, 1 May - A meeting to review tasks and expenditures in 1998-99 financial year and coordinate the tasks and budget for 1999-2000 of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development continued for the second day today at the National Archives Department on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Road.

Present on the occasion were Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, directors-general, deputy directors-general, officials and planning officers of States and Divisions.

The State and Division planning officers reported on progress of economic development of States and Divisions according to the implementation and development rates of regional economic sector in 1998-99 financial year, improvement of work quality, training and education for staff members, staff welfare and tasks to be carried out in 1999-2000.

(8)  58 members resign from Pyapon Township NLD

YANGON, 1 May - Fifty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyapon Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Fifty-eight members of Pyapon Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyapon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 23 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  Youth golfers arrive for 21st Asia Pacific Junior Golf C'ships

YANGON, 1 May - The youth golfers from Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Malaysia and India arrived here by air today to take part in the 21st Asia-Pacific Junior Golf Championships 1999 which will be held at Ngwe Thawda Golf Course of Yangon City Development Committee from 4 to 7 May.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of Reception and Accommodation Work Committee for the 21st Asia-Pacific Junior Golf Championship 1999 Deputy Quartermaster-General Col Zaw Lin, Leading Organizing Committee of the championship Secretary-General of Myanmar Golf Federation U Aung Kyi, Daw Aye Myint of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation and Secretary of the Work Committee Capt Kyi Min Htoo and members.

A total of 52 golfers - 30 from Thailand, 13 from Malaysia and nine from Chinese Taipei-arrived here.

(10)  58 members resign from Mongphyat Township NLD

YANGON, 1 May - Fifty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mongphyat Township, Shan State.

Fifty-eight members of Mongphyat Township NLD, Shan State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mongphyat Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 9 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11)  Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation honour outstanding athletes

YANGON, 1 May - Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation honoured the athletes of the ministry who won medals in the local and international sports events in 1998-99 at a ceremony at Myanma Farms Enterprise yesterday.

Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin made a speech and presented prizes.

(12)  Foreign Affairs Minister arrives back from SRV

YANGON, 1 May - Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung yesterday arrived back from the Socialist Republic of Vietnam this evening after attending the ceremony to mark Cambodia's entry into ASEAN held in Hanoi, Vietnam, at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr Nguyen Manh Cam.

Minister U Win Aung was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and officials of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Director-General of the Political Department U Nyunt Maung Shein arrived back with the minister.
