(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to South Africa

YANGON, 27 Apr - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Nelson E Mandela, President of the Republic of South Africa on the occasion of the Freedom Day of the Republic of South Africa.

(2)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Yugoslavia

YANGON, 27 Apr - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent messages of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Slobodan Milosevic, President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and to His Excellency Mr Momir Bulatovic, President of the Federal Government of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, on the occasion of the National Day of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia which falls on 27 April, 1999.

(3)  Meeting held to implement Head of State's guidance

YANGON, 26 Apr - A meeting was held this afternoon at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation to realize the guidance given by the Head of State during his inspection tour in Anya (up country).

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo said Head of State Senior General Than Shwe went on a 15-day inspection tour of Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway Divisions in Anya region and places in Shan State (North) from 5 April to 19 April.

(4)  Secretary-2 meets EC members of UMFCCI

YANGON, 26 Apr - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo met members of the Executive Committee of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry in its meeting hall on Merchant Street this morning.

President of UMFCCI U Win Myint reported on condition of the federation and arrangements to strive for accomplishment of its objectives.

In his address, the Secretary-2 said the Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry was upgraded to a federation level, and the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry was formed the reform was carried out with the goodwill and permission of the Head of State to enable it to keep pace with other nations.

As the aim of the Government is to ensure the participation of every entrepreneur of the country in the federation, entrepreneurs from various businesses, officials of economic organizations under the ministries and joint-ventures and intellectuals are going to participate-in the federation.

UMFCCI is a non-governmental organization which plays a crucial role in the economic front of the entire nation.

As the market-oriented economic system is taking its shape, the private economic sector is growing extensively and gradually improving.

According to the guidance of the Head of State, the nation at entrepreneurs are to lead the economy of the State, and the Government wilt give encouragement and advice, regulate their business undertakings with law, provide protection, levy tax and collect revenue.

Therefore, the national entrepreneurs need to actively and industriously carry out business undertakings on the basis of goodwill and encouragement of the Government.

(5)  Deputy Prime Minister meets ROK Ambassador

YANGON, 26 Apr - Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Ambassador of Republic of Korea Mr Chung Jung-Gum who called at his office at 10.30 am today.

They discussed friendly relations and investment opportunities.

(6)  Heroin seized in Mayangon, South Okkalapa

YANGON, 26 Apr - Acting on information, a combined team including members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, waited near Chawdwingon Traffic Light on Parami Road in Mayangon, on 12 April and arrested Win Kyaing, son of U San Tun of Htamalon Village, Thanlyin, who was there for narcotic dug trafficking, together with 17.894 grams of heroin.

Similarly, Tint Lwin, son of U Tun Tin of No 23 Bogyoke Street Bama-Aye Ward Dawbon, was nabbed on 14 April together with 23.7477 grams of heroin by a combined team including members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, Lying in wait at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthuma Road according to information where the suspect was arrived by a white taxi Pa/3296 for drug trafficking.

Action is being taken against the two according to law.

(7)  Commander inspects bridge and land reclamation projects in Yangon Division

YANGON, 26 Apr - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected bridge construction projects and reclamation of wetlands today in Hmawby, Taikkyi and Htantabin townships in Yangon North District today.

Accompanied by Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint and officials, the commander arrived at Yedwingon-Myochaung Road Construction Project in Hmawby Township.

Together with Brig-Gen Saw Hla Min of Phugyi Station and officials, the commander and party inspected progress in implementing the project and digging of feeder and drainage canals to grow summer paddy along the road.

(8)  55 members resign from Monghpyak Township NLD

YANGON, 96 Apr - Fifty-five members resigned from National League for Democracy of Monghpyak Township, Eastern Shan State.

Fifty-five members of Monghpyak Township NLD, Eastern Shan State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monghpyak Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 9 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  Voters of Thayawady submit declarations expressing no confidence in representatives-elect U San Win and U Maung Aye of NLD

YANGON, 26 Apr - Eligible voters of Thayawady Township Constituency-1 and Constituency-2, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U San Win and U Maung Aye who were elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy at the 1990 Multi-party Democracy General Election from Thayawady Township Constituency-1 and Constituency-2 and no support for them at the rallies held at Ngaphyugale, Thebyu and Kyaunghnyagon villages of Thayawady on 9 April.

A ceremony to present declarations expressing no confidence in U San Win who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy at the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Thayawady Township Constituency-1 was held at Ngaphyugale Village. A total of 36,103 local people of 27 village-tracts and 13 wards attended the rally.

(10)  UMFCCI explains preparatory work to host 56th ASEAN-CCI Council Meeting

YANGON, 26 Apr - The Union of Myanmar Federation of Commerce and Industry met the Press on the premises of the UMFCCI on Merchant Street today to explain the preparatory work for hosting the 56th ASEAN-CCI (ASEAN Chambers of Commerce and Industry) Council Meeting in Yangon. Afterwards, Vice-Chairman of the UMFCCI U Htein Win spoke about the background of the ASEAN-CCI, membership, objectives, activities, organization, conference, set-up of the conference, Working Committee, and holding of Business Council meetings and EXCO meetings.

Secretary of the UMFCCI U Zaw Min Win explained the preparatory work and the work to be done for hosting the 56th ASEAN-CCI Council Meeting.

The chairman, the vice chairman and the secretary of the UMFCCI responded to the questions raised by the journalists.

Delegates, officials, observers and entrepreneurs of the eight members of the ASEAN-CCI Council, as well as entrepreneurs of the Asian region and the Europe arc expected to attend the 56th ASEAN-CCI Council Meeting.

(11)  Myanmar Embassy in South Africa observes Thingyan

YANGON, 26 Apr - Staff members of Myanmar Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, observed Myanmar Traditional Maha Thingyan at the residence of the Myanmar Ambassador from 10 am to 1 pm on 17 April.

Ambassador of Myanmar to South Africa U Kyaw Thu extended greetings.

Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Africa, staff families of the embassies based in South Africa and Myanmar families in the country took part in the Myanmar Traditional Maha Thingyan.

Daw Le Le Kyi, wife of me Ambassador of Myanmar, sprinkled scented water on the guests.

The ambassador and family presented Myanma lacquer-ware to seven lucky draw winning foreigners. Then, the guests were served with Myanmar traditional foods.

(12)  Donations for MMCWA

YANGON, 26 Apr - A ceremony to present donations to Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association by well-wishers was held at MMCWA at the corner of Thanthuma Road and Parami Road in South Okkalapa Township, this afternoon, attended by Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, CEC members and donors.

K 24,000 by Country Manager Mr Debauches Ghosh of Core Healthcare Ltd and Nyanyi Nyanthwe publications worth K 18,000 by Nyanyi Nyanthwe Co Ltd were presented to Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Shwe who presented certificates of honour to the donors.
