(1)  Secretary-1 inspects casting of gold replica of Shwedagon

YANGON, 22 Apr - Patron of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Chairman of Work Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Myanma Gems Enterprise at 5.30 pm today.

They were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo and officials.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party paid obeisance to gold replica pagoda of Shwedagon Pagoda to be kept in Shwedagon Pagoda.

Then, officials reported to Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and officials on completion on casting of gold replica pagoda of Shwedagon Pagoda.

The Secretary-l inspected the pagoda and gave necessary instructions. Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt left there at 6 pm.

(2)  Silver Jubilee of Tipitaka Maha Gandayon Sarthintaik celebrated, religious title recipient Sayadaws honoured

YANGON, 22 Apr - The ceremonies to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Kaba Aye Tipitaka Maha Gandayon Sarthintaik, and honour and pay respects to the treatise compiler Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Pannnissarabhivamsa and Tipitakadhara Dhammabhandagarika Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sumangala Lankara, and six members of the Sangha of Tipitaka Maha Gandayon Sarthintaik who had passed this year's Tipitakadhara examination were held at Tipitaka Maha Gandayon Sarthintaik today, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Afterwards, songs and verses extolling the virtues of the Sayadaws were chanted.

The Secretary-l, ministers and well-wishers offered alms to the Sayadaws.

The Secretary-l accepted K 5 million donated by well-wisher Mr Anusorn Supmanu of Thailand to the Tipitaka Maha Gandayon Sarthintaik.

Padana Nayaka of Amarapura Maha Gandhayon Taik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Maha Dhammakathiha Bahujanahitadhara Bhaddanta Kundhalabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

(3)  Deputy Prime Minister receives Regional Business Manager of China Light & Power International

YANGON, 22 Apr - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Regional Business Manager of China Light & Power International of Hongkong Mr Joseph K L Cheung and party who called at his office at 2 pm today.

Present at the call were Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung and official of the Government Office Settlement and Housing Development. They discussed investment opportunities on power generation in Myanmar.

(4)  Coord meeting on hosting 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting

YANGON, 22 Apr - A coordination meeting on hosting the 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting was held at the Labour Department this afternoon.

It was attended by Chairman of Central Committee for Hosting 13th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Work Committee Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein and officials.

Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe made a speech on the occasion, calling for collaborative efforts of officials to successfully host the meeting which will economically and politically benefit the nation.

He also called for preparatory work for hosting the meeting.

A general round of discussions on preparation for the meeting then followed.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Win Sein and officials took part in the discussions.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.

YANGON, 22 Apr - Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung met Managing Director of Itochu Steel Asia Pte Ltd of Singapore Mr Mitsuru Tanaka and party who called at his office at 2.30 pm today.

Present at the call were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(6)  Deputy Prime Minister receives Ambassador of Malaysia

YANGON, 22 Apr - Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Ambassador of Malaysia Dato' Muhammad Bin Noh who called at his office at 3 pm today. They discussed friendly relations and investment opportunities.

(7)  USDA Secretariat member hosts dinner for Pa-O study group from Hsihseng

YANGON, 22 April - Member of the Secretariat of Union Solidarity and Development Association U Khin Maung Thein hosted dinner in honour of members of Pa-O study group from Hissing in Shan State (South) at Central Bank of Myanmar this evening Also present were Patrons of USDA Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Secretary General U Than Aung, Central Executive Committee members U Than Shwe, U Soe Tha and Brig-Gen Thein Aung, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun and officials. U Khin Maung Thein extended greetings.

He then exchanged gifts with members of the study group. Members of the study group performed traditional dances. U Khin Maung Thein presented a flower basket to them.

(8)  WHO 24th Session of Southeast Asia Advisory Committee on Health Research continues

YANGON, 22 Apr - The 24th Session of WHO Southeast Asia Advisory Committee on Health Research continued for the third day today at Sedona Hotel.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Director Dr Utom Muchtar Rafei and officials of South-East Asian Region Office of WHO, advisory committee members of India, Indonesia, Nepal, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar and guests.

Officials presented reports on Contribution of Health Research to Evidence Based Policy and Decision Making and Role of Vaccine Research in Disease Prevention and Control in the 21st Century in the morning and Policies and Strategies to Support WHO in Health Research, Partnerships in Health Research in the evening.

Then, the participants visited Medical Research Department. Acting Director-General of Medical Research Department Dr Myint Lwin and officials conducted them round the department. The session will continue tomorrow.

(9)  55 members resign from Monghpyak Township NLD

YANGON, 22 Apr - Fifty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Monghpyak Township, Shan State (East).

Fifty-five members of Monghpyak Township NLD, Shan State (East), of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monghpyak Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 9 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  22 members resign from Kamayut Township NLD

YANGON, 22 Apr - Twenty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kamayut Township, Yangon Division.

One member of Kamayut Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kamayut Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 26 January 1999, six, six, eight and one members followed suit on 7 February 1999, 1 February 1999, 24 February 1999 and 26 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11)  WHO Director leaves

YANGON, 22 Apr - Director Dr Utom Muchtar Rafei and officials of South-East Asian Region Office of WHO attended the 24th Session of WHO Southeast Asia Advisory Committee on' Health Research, left here by air this afternoon.

They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Resident Representative of WHO Dr Klaus Wagner and officials, directors-general and officials of Ministry of Health.

(12)  Tailoring and cookery courses conclude

YANGON, 22 Apr - Tailoring Course No 4/99 and Cookery Course No 3/99 sponsored by Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association concluded at the multipurpose building of MMCWA at the corner of Parami and Thanthuma Roads in South Okkalapa Township this morning.

Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe made a speech.

Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Vice Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented certificates to the trainees and awards to outstanding trainees.

Also present on the occasion were members of the executive committee of MMCWA. Next courses will be opened on 17 May l999 again, and similar courses conducted bi-monthly.
