YANGON, 21 Apr - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom on the occasion of Her Majesty's Birthday which falls on 21 April 1999.

YANGON, 21 Apr - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Ezer Weizman, President of the State of Israel, on the occasion of the Independence Day of the State of Israel which falls on 21 April 1999.

(3)  Secretary-1 calls for dedicated efforts for border area development

YANGON, 20 Apr - The Special Refresher Course No 1 for Primary Teachers in Border Areas concluded in Nawarat Hall at Central Institute of Civil Service in Hlegu Township, Yangon Division, this morning, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt Gen Khin Nyunt presented men's and women's model trainee awards to Primary Assistant Teacher U Soe Hla Min of Kamamaung Basic Education High School in Papon Township, Kayin State and Primary Assistant Teacher Daw Aye Aye Mon of BEPS No 4 of Panga Village in Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State and awards for diligence to PAT U Aung Kyaw Win of Kyaukyonthazi BEPS in Rathetaung Township, Rakhine State, PAT Daw Myo Myo Khaing of Phaungtaw BEPS in Yebyu Township, Taninthayi Division and PAT Daw Hnin Moe Oo of Wammaing BEPS of Mongtung Township, Shan State.

Then, the Secretary-1 presented model hostel awards to the trainees of No 6 Hostel of No 7 Men's Company and the trainees of No-1 Extension Hostel of No 10 Women's Company and certificates to all trainees through their respective leaders. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt cordially met with trainees.

(4)  Shwedagon Pagoda Shwehtidaw hoisting, gold plates offering to be consecrated on Full-moon Day of Kason

YANGON, 20 Apr - A meeting was held this evening in Ancient Museum Tazaung at Shwedagon Pagoda for holding a consecration ceremony marking the hoisting of the Shwehtidaw and offering of gold plates to the pagoda, with an address by Patron of Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 said arrangements are being made to invite 5,000 members of the Sangha to the ceremony which will be held in accord with the traditions as in the past. It was a rare opportunity for those who had participated in making donations, renovating the Shwehtidaw and offering gold plates to the pagoda.

He urged all to strive for successful holding of the ceremony.

Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa explained plans to invite 5,000 members of the Sangha and holding of the merit sharing ceremony in Maha Pasana Cave.

Chairman of the Leading Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung reported on arrangements to hold the consecration ceremony on the pagoda platform on the Full-moon Day of Kason (Buddha Day) 1361ME, to offer dawn meal to 1,800 members of the Sangha and donate provisions to members of the Sangha.

Chairman of the Work Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint presented progress in making arrangements to hold the consecration ceremony.

(5)  Secretary-1 receives WHO Director of SEA Region Office

YANGON, 20 Apr - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Director Dr Utom Muchtar Rafei of South-East Asian Region Office of the World Health Organization who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

The WHO director of the SEA Region Office was accompanied by Resident Representative of WHO Dr Klaus Wagner.

(6)  Oil palm, rubber and paddy and cultivation work in Taninthayi Division coordinated

YANGON, 20 Apr - A coordination meeting on projects to cultivate oil palm, rubber and paddy in Taninthayi Division was held at the Prime Minister's Office on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon.

Making a speech at the meeting, the Secretary-2 said there is a large number of acres of and on which cultivation works are not carried out in the country, and national entrepreneurs who have capital and management capability are now undertaking the agricultural works there.

The national entrepreneurs are preparing to cultivate not only oil palm and rubber but also paddy in Taninthayi Division, he said adding the meeting was to attend to the needs before the rainy season as Taninthayi Division is a region with its own weather conditions.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung explained allotment of acres of cultivable land to the entrepreneurs, saying arrangements are being made for ensuring convenience of the national entrepreneurs.

He spoke of the need for the entrepreneurs to actually undertake the agricultural works on the acres allotted to them.

The national entrepreneurs presented arrangements for oil palm, rubber and paddy cultivation and requirements.

Deputy Minister Commodore Myo Tint explained matters relating to import of farming machinery.

It was followed by officials' suggestions for success of cultivation of oil palm and rubber.

The Secretary-2 made arrangements to meet the needs.

(7)  24th Session of WHO Southeast Asia Advisory Committee on Health Research begins

YANGON, 20 Apr - The 24th Session of WHO Southeast Asia Advisory Committee on Health Research began at Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning with an opening address of Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

It was also attended by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Director-General of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, heads of department and advisers under the Ministry of Health, WHO Resident Representative Dr Klaus Wagner member of WHO Southeast Asia Advisory Committee and officials of WHO Head Office in Geneva and Southeast Asia Office and guests.

YANGON, 20 Apr - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met Ambassador of Republic of Korea Mr Chung Jung-Gum who called at his office at 4.30 pm today.

YANGON, 20 Apr - Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met Ambassador of Malaysia Dato' Muhammad Bin Noh who called at his office at 3 pm today.

YANGON, 20 Apr - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Japanese entrepreneurs led by Chairman Mr Noboru Kurosaki of San Ei Regulator Ltd who called at his office this morning.

Also present on the occasion were directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry.

(11)  Myanmar delegation leaves for Vietnam

YANGON, 20 Apr - A Myanmar delegation led by Director-General Dr Mya Maung of Agriculture Planning Department left for Vietnam by air yesterday morning to attend Senior Officers Meeting of the 19th Meeting of ASEAN Ministers for Agriculture and Forestry which will be held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from 20 to 22 April.

Members of the delegation are Deputy Director General of Fisheries Department U Than Tun of Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and Deputy Director U Myo Myat of Planning and Statistics Department of the Ministry of Forestry.

(12)  Taninthayi Township gets TV re-transmission station

YANGON, 20 Apr - A television re-transmission station in Taninthayi Township, Taninthayi Division, has been built with the funds of the Department for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and under the supervision of Myanmar Radio and Television.

The construction work was completed on 26 March 1999.

The station is re-transmitting MRTV programmes with 50 watt capacity on channel 8 beginning 27 March morning.

YANGON, 20 Apr - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Managing Director of Leo Property Management Pte Ltd of Singapore Mr Andrew Choo who called at his office at 3 pm today.

YANGON, 20 Apr - Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Director Mr Hiroshi Higashiura of Asian and Pacific Region of Federation of Intentional Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Associations who called at his office this afternoon.

(15)  Thaton Township NLD

YANGON, 20 Apr - Thirty members resigned from the al League for Democracy of Thaton Township, Mon State.

Thirty members of Thaton Township NLD, Mon State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Thaton Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 17 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(16)  12 members resign from Kyaukse Township NLD

YANGON, 20 Apr - Twelve members resigned from National League for Democracy of Kyaukse Township, by Division member of Kyaukse Township NLD, Mandalay of his own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyaukse Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 4 March seven, one and three members followed suit on 17 March 25 March and 6 April 1999 as they no longer wished rate in party politic of NLD.
