(1)  Senior General Than Shwe inspects Ngamin Dam Project, Paunglaung Multi-Purpose Dam Project

YANGON, 18 Apr - Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected Ngamin Dam Project and Paunglaung Multi-purpose Dam Project today.

At the Tatmadaw Guest House in Bagan-NyaungU this morning, the Senior General heard reports on the farming work on alluvial lands along the Ayeyawady River in Magway Division and vacant sand banks, cultivation of groundnut, sesamum, beans, onion, watermelon, cucumber and Virginia tobacco on 10-acre sand bank near the Tatmadaw Guest House, and gave guidance.

There are over 36,000 acres of vacant sand banks in Magway Division, and based on the result of the 10-acre farm, crops will be cultivated on them if feasible.

Accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, ministers, officials, and national entrepreneurs, the Senior General left for Ngamin Dam in Taungdwingyi Township, Magway Division, by helicopter.

They were welcomed they y Tactical Operations Commander of No 88 Light Infantry Division Col Sein Than, Secretary of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Aung and officials.

At the briefing hall, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported to the Senior General and entourage on the chain of dams projects to the east of Magway and the irrigated acreage, Director-General of Irrigation Department U Myo Myint on the works to be carried by the end of April for completion of Ngamin Dam, and Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Thein Zaw on the cultivated acreage and cultivation of crops in Taungdwingyi and nearby areas.

After hearing the reports, the Senior General said dams are being built to irrigate farms in the dry zone and spoke of the need to irrigate fully to the farms as targeted.

Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of the Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported to the Senior General on Magway-Minbu Ayeyawady River Bridge Project.

The Senior General later inspected Ngamin Dam and presented gifts to the personnel of Irrigation Department Construction Division-3.

After completion of Ngamin, Natmauk, Palin, Sunchaung, Saddan, Yinmale, Kinpuntaung, Bangon and Yanpei Dam Projects on the eastern section of the Ayeyawady River, they will irrigate over 76,000 acres.

Today, Natmauk, Saddan, Kinpuntaung and Bangon Dams have been completed.

The Senior General and entourage proceeded to the Metallurgy Research and Development Centre of the Ministry of Science and Technology in Ela, Lewe Township, where they were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of the Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye and officials.

In the meeting hall of the department, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko reported to the Senior General and entourage on the functions and activities of departments under the ministry, and Director-General of Myanma Science and Technological Research Centre Col Tin Htut on the research works of the Centre.

Minister U Thaung presented a supplementary report.

Afterwards, the Senior General inspected the research and development works there before proceeding to Paunglaung Multi purpose Dam Project in Pyinmana Township.

Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint reported to the Senior General and entourage on the project, Chief Engineer U Win Kyaw of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise on the hydro-electric power generating project, Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint on the project works and requirement of machinery, and Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin on the plans to send heavy machines to the project site.

After giving guidance, the Senior General presented gifts to the technicians and experts of the project.

They later inspected the project works.

On completion, the dam will be irrigating 50,000 acres of farms and its hydel power works will generate 280 mega-watts.

(2)  Secretary-1 inspects Maha Bandoola Bridge Project

YANGON, 18 Apr - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, inspected Maha Bandoola Bridge Construction Project in Pazundaung and Dawbon Townships today.

Superintending Engineer 47 members a Dabayin Tow U Khin Maung Aye and Deputy Superintending Engineer U Ohn Han of Maha Bandoola Bridge Construction Project reported to the Secretary-l on progress of work in the project and completion of the approach road.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint presented a supplementary report.

Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on the plans for shipment of iron beams and frames to the project, and Deputy Minister U Pe Than on the waterway in Pazundaung Creek.

The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions. Deputy Chief Engineer (Architect) U Aung Kyee Myint presented a report on the bridge designing work.

Later, the Secretary-l was conducted round the project site. The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to the project site in Dawbon Township.

Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee Col Myint Aung reported to him on progress of work in Dawbon Housing Project Phase-8 and repaying of six-lane Yamonna Road in the township.

Maha Bandoola Bridge spanning Pazundaung Creek linking Pazundaung with Dawbon will be a suspension iron bridge.

The main bridge structure swill be 787.2 feet long, with 1,412-foot-long approach road on Pazundaung side and 1,443-foot-long approach road on Dawbon side. There will be 72-foot-wide six-lane motor-way with six-foot-wide pedestrian lane on each side.

(3)  Mayor leaves for Singapore, China

YANGON, 18 Apr - Myanmar delegation led by Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay left here by air this morning for Singapore to attend the "World Conference on Model Cities" to be held from 19 to 21 April in Singapore and 1999 International Horticultural Exposition, Kunming to be opened on 1 May in Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung and officials, Ambassador of Singapore Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow, Ambassador of People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong and officials and relatives.

Mayor U Ko Lay was accompanied by Joint-Secretary of YCDC U Kyi Win, Head of City Planning and Land Administration Department U Tun Than Tun and Head of Office U Tint Wai of YCDC as members.

(4)  1999 National Yachting Championship concludes

YANGON, 18 Apr - A prize distribution ceremony of 1999 National Yachting Championship sponsored by Myanmar Yachting Federation was held at Yangon Yachting Club, Innya Lake, yesterday evening, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win and officials presented prizes to the winners in Optimist Open Class, Optimist A Class, Optimist B Class, Rater Class, International Laser Class, Sharpie A Class, Sharpie B Class, Sharpie C Class and International 420 Class.

(5)  Youth leadership training course of Youth Apostolate (Yangon) concludes

YANGON, 18 Apr - Youth leadership training course of Youth Apostolate (Yangon) concluded at St. Augustine Church on Inya Road this afternoon.

Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin delivered a speech. Trainees sang the opening song, and master of ceremonies Julia Aye Thanda Shwe extended greetings. Youth Apostolate Secretary Christine Min Min Shwe said prayers. Youth Apostolate Chairperson Ms Geraldine Williams explained the purpose of the course. The deputy minister spoke words of counsel. Then, entertainment programmes followed.

Youth Chaplain Father Edwin David expressed thanks and brought the ceremony to a close.

(6)  Two more heroin refineries exposed

YANGON, 18 Apr - Acting on information, a local Tatmadaw column combed an area between Heymoelon and Namsu at map reference (P 193993) in Muse Township, Shan State (North) and found a hut used in refining heroin and seized paraphernalia which included 17 plastic containers of chemical liquid (162 litres), six plastic containers of ether (54 litres),two plastic containers of spirit (36 litres) and other paraphernalia including 15 retorts.

Similarly, a combined team including members of local intelligence unit, Myanmar Police Force and Tatmadaw members, acting on information, searched Ta Mong Nge Village in Kutkai Township, Shan State (North) and stopped and searched a car (Ah/ 2575) which was on its way from Kutkai to Ta Mong Nge.

They arrested Yanshi Hlyan, 20, son of U Yan Lauk of Tetkanine Village, Kutkai Township, together with two steel retorts used in refining narcotic drugs.

Upon further information, the team searched Hophet Village in Kutkai Township and found a point to be used in refining drugs at map reference (0-956483) and seized paraphernalia including 28 barrels of spirit (5,040 litres), 28 containers of chemical liquid (630 litres), ten barrels of liquid ether (1,8(00 litres), 196 plastic containers of sulphuric acid (3,528 litres), four barrels and 36 plastic containers of kerosene (1,350 litres), 14 small plastic containers of sodium hydride, 18 medium plastic containers of sodium hydride and other paraphernalia.

Eight camps used in refining narcotic drugs were destroyed in remote areas by the Tatmadaw members led by Tatmadaw columns from 1 January 1999 up to today.

(7)  Myanmar women paddlers to take part in '99 Miyoshi Cup Competition

YANGON, 18 Apr - Myanmar women paddlers Ma Khin Mar Oo and Ma Aye Mi Khine of Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation led by Executive Dr Pandora Aung Gyi left for Nagoya, Japan, by Thai Airways at 7.30 pm tonight to take part in the '99 Miyoshi Cup Ladies International Kayak Competition from 21 to 25 April.

The Myanmar paddlers will enter four events-200 and 500 metres singles and pairs.

They were seen off at the airport by federation executives and families.

(8)  Over 41,000 eligible voters of Patheingyi submit petitions expressing no confidence in representative-elect U San Hla Raw of NLD

YANGON, 18 Apr - Eligible voters of Patheingyi Township Constituency-2, submitted signed petitions expressing no confidence in U San Hla Baw who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy at the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Patheingyi Township Constituency-2, and no support for him at the ceremonies held at Yankintaung, Letkaung, Kyaukmi and Ohnchaw regions of the township, on 3 April morning. A total of 11,120 local people from two wards and 15 villages attended the ceremony in Yankintaung region.

U Thet Khaing of Yekyi Village, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U San Hla Baw and no support for him. Then, U Mu Too of Yekyi Village, on behalf of the voters, presented petitions of no confidence in U San Hla Baw and no support for him signed by 11,449 local people to Chairman of Patheingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Than Myint.

A similar ceremony was held at Letkaung region, attended by 6,311 local people from 13 villages.

U Bo of Thalegon Village, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U San Hla Baw and no support for him. Then, U Aung Yi of Botetkon Village presented petitions of no confidence in U San Hla Baw and no support for him signed by 6,517 local people to member of Patheingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Tun Shwe.

At Kyaukmi region, him. U Pyu of the village presented petitions of no confidence in U San Hla Baw and no support for him signed by 12,046 local people to member of Patheingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Tin Han.

Likewise, 11,000 local people of 11 villages attended the ceremony which took place at Ohnchaw region.

U Pho Swe of Sedaw Village, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U San Hla Baw and no support for him. U Kyi of Kywenapha Village presented petitions of no confidence in U San Hla Baw and no support for him signed by 11,049 local people to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission member U Htay Win.

Out of 34,087 eligible voters of Patheingyi Township Constituency-2, 13,870 or 40.69 per cent voted for U San Hla Baw of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election. The number of voters who presented signed petitions of no confidence in U San Hla Baw and no support for him totaled 41,061.

(9)  47 members resign from Dabayin Township NLD

YANGON, 18 Apr - Forty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Dabayin Township, Sagaing Division.

Forty-seven members of Dabayin Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Dabayin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 16 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  34 members resign from Ngazun Township NLD

YANGON, 18 Apr - Thirty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngazun Township, Sagaing Division.

Thirty-four members of Ngazun Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngazun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 9 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party Politics of NLD.
