(1)  Senior General Than Shwe inspects border trade in Muse

YANGON, 10 Apr - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance in meeting with officers and Tatmadawmen and families of battalions and units in Lashio Station at the hall of North-East Command on 9 April.

Senior General Than Shwe, accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Ministers and officials, left for Tarmoenyae Village in Kutkai Township by helicopter.

The Senior General and party were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander Col Soe Yi and officials, personnel, teachers, students, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and locals.

The Senior General toured the village.

Col Soe Yi reported on efforts for development of Tarmoenyae and its environs, cultivation of crops and construction of Tarmoenyae-Monsi-Tarpar Road.

The Senior General then gave guidance. He cordially met service personnel and local people at Basic Education High School. He gave guidance on living in unison with Union spirit and working for regional development.

The Senior General and party went to the 105-Mile commodities checkpoint in Muse Township by helicopter. They were welcomed by officials of departments.

Tactical Operations Commander Col Soe Yi reported on construction of the checkpoint and arrangements for import and export undertakings and Director-General of Border Trade Department Col Min Hla Aung on border trade in Muse Township, conditions of border trade, development of import and export and collection of taxes.

Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than and Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo took part in the discussions. Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance.

Senior General Than Shwe and party inspected export and import checkpoints.

The Senior General and party proceeded to Muse where they were welcomed by Chairman of Muse District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myint Thein, Secretary of Township Peace and Development Council U Soe Lin and officials.

(2)  Senior General Than Shwe visits Namtu Mines

YANGON, 10 Apr - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe visited Namtu Mines today.

On his inspection tour, the Senior General was accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers and officials.

They left Lashio for Namtu by helicopter at 8.30 am.

They were welcomed there by Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Officiating Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Aung Min, departmental officials and personnel, teachers, students, and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades.

Afterwards, the Senior General .and entourage inspected functions of the lead and zinc refineries of Namtu Mines, and pure lead, silver, antimony, copper and nickel metals.

At the guest house, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint briefed the Senior General and entourage on the salient points about the history of Namtu Mines, underground deposits, and refining of ores.

Managing Director of No 1 Mining Enterprise U Saw Lwin also reported on the functions of the workshops and mills, locations of lead and zinc mines, strength of workers and personnel, and staff welfare.

The Senior General gave suggestions on maintenance of the machines and workshops of Namtu Mines and exploration of new deposits.

Member of the USDA Central Executive Committee U Thaung inspected the computer courses conducted in Lashio by the USDA.

(3)  Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing donate provisions to monasteries in Lashio

YANGON, 10 Apr - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family donated provisions to monasteries in Lashio at Thirimingala Mansushan Kyaung in town at 6.15 am today.

Present on the occasion were member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee from monasteries in Lashio, members of State Central Working Committee of the Sangha, Ovadacariya Sayadaws, Vice-Chairman Sayadaw and members of Shan State Sangha Nayaka Committee, Chairman Sayadaw and members of Lashio Township Sangha Nayaka Committee, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and members of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers, heads of department, Shan State level departmental officials, Lashio District and Township officials and guests.

First, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family offered Aryon 'soon' to members of the Sangha.

Lashio Township Myole Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kavindacara administered the Five Precepts.

Members of the Sangha recited the Parittas.

Then, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family donated provisions to Myole Kyaungtaik Sayadaw for 38 monasteries in Lashio.

Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family also presented offertories to the Sayadaw.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and party presented offertories to the Sayadaws.

Afterwards, Myole Kyaungtaik Sayadaw delivered a sermon.

Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family shared merits.

After the ceremony, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family laid the corner stones for the construction of a Sangha hospital in the Kyaungtaik and sprinkled scented water on the corner stone.

Then, Senior General Than Shwe and party inspected construction of Maha Myatmuni Gandakudi Kyaungtaik in Lashio and paid homage to Maha Myatmuni Bronze Buddha image.

(4)  Heroin seized in Mongshu South Okkalapa

YANGON, 10 Apr - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit, Myanmar Police Force and departmental personnel, acting on information, waited on at Sawbwa Road at Ward 4, Mongshu, Shan State (South). They then searched Aung Aung, 30, son of U Chit Swe who lived in Ward 4, Mongshu, and seized 1.7147 kilos of heroin from his plastic bag.

Similarly, members of local combined team, waited at a point on Thitsa Road of Ward 8 in South Okkalapa Township after receiving information that sale of drugs would take place there on I April. They then arrested Ma Myint Myint Yi, 45, daughter of U Maung Mya of No 220/120, Hainghsin Duwah Gyi Road, Ward 12, Dagon Myothit (East) Township, with 0.08573 kilo of heroin.

Upon further investigation, the team searched the house of Min Oo, 30, son of U Maung Maung Gyi, at 422, Aungzeya Street, Ward 13, Yankin Township and seized 0.14349 kilo of heroin with K 200,000 realized from the sales of narcotic drugs.

Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(5)  Commander observes Dhammacariya and Pali Pahtamabyan Exam

YANGON, 10 Apr - Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win observed Dhammacariya and Pali Pahtamabyan Examination at Sasana Beikman in Myitkyina on 5 April.

He paid obeisance to Member of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw of Wuntho Kyaungtaik, Myitkyina, Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita, Agga Maha Saddhama Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Silavamsa, Chairman of Kachin State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw of Aungnan Yeiktha Kyaungtaik Agga Maha Karnmahtanacariya Bhadanta Pannasara and members of Township Sangha Nayaka Committee.

The commander asked the Sayadaws about the exam and attended to their needs.

In the afternoon, the commander attended the ceremony to present permits to jade entrepreneurs for reclamation of vacant and virgin lands.

On the occasion, the Northern Command commander presented permits to 81 entrepreneurs to reclaim allotted 43,820 acres.

(6)  Over 23,000 eligible voters of Myinmu submit petitions expressing no confidence in U Ba Ba, representative elect of NLD

YANGON, 10 Apr - Eligible voters of Myinmu Township Constituency, Sagaing Division, submitted the signed petitions expressing no confidence in U Ba Ba who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multi-party Democracy General Election from Myinmu Township Constituency ant no support to him at the ceremonies held in Htihsaung region and Nyaungbinkan region, Myinmu Township, on 28 February morning.

A total of 11,250 people from 18 village-tracts attended the ceremony in Htihsaung region of Myinmu Township.

U Aung Din of Inma Village, on behalf of the eligible voters of Htihsaung region, expressed no confidence in U Ba Ba and no support to him.

U Htay of Htihsaung Village presented petitions of no confidence in U Ba Ba and no support to him signed by 12,717 people of 18 village-tracts to member of Myinmu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommittee U Ba Thin.

Similarly, a ceremony was held at Nyaungbinkan region, attended by 9,285 local people of 14 village-tracts.

(7)  Four-storey building donated to Thayettaw Kyaungtaik Hman-Kyaung

YANGON, 10 Apr - Merits were shared for donation of a four-storey building to Thayettaw Kyaungtaik Hman-Kyaung in Lanmadaw Township this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Ministers for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, heads of department concerned and officials.

Those present received the Five Precept from Secretary Sayadaw of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maharatthaguru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara.

The minister supplicated on donation of the building.

The building was constructed by Maintenance Factory at a cost of K 16.4 million donated by entrepreneurs dealing with enterprises under the Ministry of Industry-land well-wishers.

The minister and wife Daw Khin Khin Yi, officials and well-wishers offered alms to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha.

Then, they shared merits for the donation.

(8)  More members resign from Kyaikmaraw, Thaton Township NLD

YANGON, 10 Apr - Seven members resigned from National League for Democracy of Kyaikmaraw Township, Mon State.

Seven members of Kyaikmaraw Township NLD, Mon State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyaikmaraw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 6 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Thaton

Likewise, fifty-members resigned from National League for Democracy of Thaton Township, Mon State.

Fifty members of Thaton Township NLD, Mon State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Thaton Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 7 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  Mayor inspects City Farm Resort

YANGON, 10 Apr - Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, accompanied by Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung and officials, inspected Udo farm near Meethwekyin Village, City Farm Resort near Sabagaing Village and construction of recreation centre and reclamation of lands in Kya-inn Village Tract in Taikkyi Township this morning.

They were welcomed by Chairman of Agricultural Work Committee Col Thaung Wai, Secretary of Agricultural Work Committee U Myint Swe and committee members.

The mayor inspected construction project of recreation centre and scale model, cultivation of summer paddy and construction of canals.

Mayor U Ko Lay made a speech on the occasion.

Then, Mayor U Ko Lay and party inspected the construction of city rice mill and Kyontamyin bridge on Udo-Kya-inn Road, reclamation of lands on Tawlati-Kya-inn Road and Taikkyi-Kya-inn Road.

(10)  Homage to be paid to retired teachers of universities

YANGON, 10 Apr - The Executive Committee of the Universities Buddhist Association (Yangon) held its meeting at the Universities Dhammayon yesterday.

The meeting decided to organize a ceremony to pay homage to the retired teachers, who are now 75 years old and above, on Myanmar New Year Day, 17 April.

Those wishing to donate for the ceremony may do so at the offices of the rectors and administrators of the universities and colleges.

(11)  Deputy Minister for Forestry tours Magway Division

YANGON, 10 Apr - Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun inspected works for greening of Tantkyitaung on 7 April.

The Assistant Director of Pakokku District reported to him on progress of work.

The deputy minister said that in keeping with the guidance of the Head of State, edible oil Thabye is to be cultivated in vacant places, and that it is also essential to plant all-weather trees there.

He said the 1.6 million gallon capacity Emerald Lake must be kept carefully and used effectively for greening of the environs.

He later inspected the tasks for irrigation through water-spraying system.

He proceeded to the Thabye Forest Reserve Station of the Department for Greening of Dry Zone in Seikphyu Township, Pakokku District, and inspected the new water pond.

He later toured the forest reserves in Hsaw Township.

On 8 April, he inspected works for conservation and greening of Tetmataung Forest.
