(1)  Senior General Than Shwe called for efforts for expansion of agriculture sector in northern Shan State states, Divisions should be far-sighted in making efforts for regional sufficiency of rice

YANGON, 9 April - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance on boosting of production in agriculture sector in Lashio yesterday.

Accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development it, Council, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers and officials, the Senior General left PyinOoLwin for Kyaukme in Shan State (North) by helicopter at 9.30 am yesterday.

The Senior General and entourage were welcomed at Kyaukme by Brig-Gen Soe Htay, Chairman of Kyaukme District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Kyi, departmental officials and personnel of Kyaukme, Nawanghkio and Hsipaw, Tatmadawmen and their families, and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades.

Later, the Senior General cordially met with Tatmadawmen and families of Kyaukme Station and Namlang Station, and departmental of finials and personnel of Kyaukme District and Kyaukme, Nawnghkio and Hsipaw townships and gave necessary instructions.

The ministers, who were on the tour, explained and fulfilled the requirements of the three townships of Kyaukme District.

The Senior General and entourage proceeded to Lashio, where they were welcomed by Commander of No 101 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Aung Thein Lin, Commander of the Tactical Operations Command of North-East Command Col Khin Soe, Tactical Operations Commander Col Soe Win Myint, Secretary of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Win Han and departmental officials, families, and local people.

In his meeting with the members of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council, agriculture at provisory committee, and chairmen of District Peace and Development Councils at the meeting hall of the North-East Command, the Senior General said the northern of Shan State still does not have adequate supply of rice though there are plenty of arable land for cultivation and noted that if the states and divisions could not work for the regional sufficiency of rice, the entire nation would not get rice in surplus.

(2)  Topmost central pivot fixed atop Shwebontha Muni Pagoda

YANGON, 9 Apr - The topmost central pivot was conveyed and fixed atop Shwebontha Muni Pagoda in Padaung, Bago Division, this morning.

Present on the occasion were Sayadaw of Zagartaung Kyaungtaik, Pyay, State Ovadacariya Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Vilasagara and members of the Sangha, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and of the Council Members Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and -Development Council Commander Maj Gen Thura Shwe Mann and Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj Gen Tin Aye, Chairman of Close Supervisory Committee for All-round Renovation of Shwebontha Muni Pagoda Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, ministers, the mayor of Yangon, deputy ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), the commander of No 66 LID, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department , members of Division/District/Township Peace and Development Councils members of Committee for All-round Renovation of the Pagoda, officials of social organizations and devotees.

The-Secretary-l, dignitaries and those present received the Nine Precepts from the State Ovadacariya Sayadaw.

The Sayadaw and members of the Sangha then recited parities.

The Secretary-1 and party presented the central pivot to Sayadaw of Zawtikayon Pali Tekkatho Kyaungtaik Joint Secretary Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Bhaddanta Kundalajoti. Afterwards, the Secretary-l and party offered alms to the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha.

The Joint Secretary Sayadaw delivered a sermon, and then those present shared merits.

On the occasion, the Secretary-1 accepted jewellery from Maung Zay Thiha and Ma Zay Zin Lat that from U Pan Aung, on behalf of Lt-Gen Min Thein family and that from U Thein and Daw Khin Khin of Kyar Garment Factory of Shwedaung.

YANGON, 9 Apr - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Thein Aung, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Chief of Staff (Air) Brig-Gen Myint Swe, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads and officials, left here by Tatmadaw aircraft on 8 April morning and arrived at Pyay, Bago Division, at 9.00 am.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed at Khittaya Airport in Pyay by member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Commander of No 66 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Aung Min, military officers and civilian officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross, Auxiliary Fire Brigade and Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, families and officials.

(4)  MIC Secretary meets entrepreneurs

YANGON, 9 Apr - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung met national entrepreneurs at lie Ministry of Commerce this afternoon.

The minister said some of the entrepreneurs who have been permitted by MIC to make investments are starting their businesses. They should strive to reach the expected production capacity so as to export their products as targeted, to fulfil local markets and to benefit the nation.

Companies should keep accounts systematically and pay the tax fully.

Departmental officials and entrepreneurs were also present.

YANGON, 9 Apr - Deputy Prime Minister Lt Gen Tin Tun received Ambassador of Republic of Korea Mr. Chung Jung-Gum who called at his office at l pm today. Present at the call were officials of the Government Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

(6)  48,321 eligible voters of Wetlet submit petitions expressing no confidence in U lawn Myaing, representative-elect of NLD

YANGON, 9 Apr - Eligible voters of Wetlet Township Constituency-1, Sagaing Division, submitted signed pettifogs expressing no confidence, in U Tun Myaing who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National league for Democracy at the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Wetlet Township Constituency-l, and no support to him at lie ceremony held at Mokhsoechon, Ingyinbin and Paukkan Stations in Wetlet Township on 25 February morning.

A total of 38,642 people from 37 wards/village- tracts attended the ceremony in Wetlet Township.

Altogether 14,397 people of Mokhsoechon Station attended the ceremony at Mokhsoechon Station.

U Paw, Agriculture Department employee (Retired) of Mokhsoechon Village, on behalf of the voters of Mokhsoechon Ywama of Wetlet Township Constituency-l, expressed no confidence in U Tun Myaing and no support to him.

Farmer U Myint Wai of Mokhsoechon Village, on behalf of the 11,216 voters from 2 village-tracts, presented petitions of no confidence in U Tun Myaing and no support to him signed by the eligible voters to member of Wetlet Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Submission Assistant Township Education Officer U Mya Ttuein.

A similar ceremony was held at Ingyinbin Station.

Present on the occasion were 11,520 people of two wards and 15 villages in Wetlet Township.

Farmer U Kyaw Win of Ingyinbin Village, on behalf of the voters of the village in Wetlet Township Constituency-1, expressed no confidence in U Tun Myaing and no support to him.

Farmer U Kyaw Lin of Ingyinbin Village, on behalf of the 21,401 people from two wards and 15 villages, presented petitions of no confidence in U Tun Myaing and no support to him signed by the eligible voters to member of Wetlet Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Tun Khin.

Altogether 12,725 people of 11 villages of Wetlet Township attended the ceremony at Paukkhan Station.

Farmer U Thein Oo of Paukkan Village, on behalf of the voters of the villages in Wetlet Township Constituency-l, expressed no confidence in U Tun Myaing and no support to him.

Farmer U Hsaing of Paukkan Village, on behalf of the- 15,704 voters from 11 village-tracts, presented petitions of no confidence in U Tun Myaing and no support to signed by the eligible voters to member of Wetlet Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kyaw Toe.

A total of 38,642 people of 37 village-tracts-of Wetlet Township Constituency-l attended the ceremonies.

Out of 54,742 eligible voters of Wetlet Township Constituency-1, 23,986 or 43.81 per cent voted for U Tun Myaing of National League for Democracy in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election. The number of voters who presented signed petitions of no confidence in U Tun Myaing totaled 48,321 or 88.27 percent.

(7)  Minister inspects development projects in Mon Kanyin States

YANGON, 9 Apr - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, accompanied by Director-General Col Myo Myint of Development Affairs Department and officials, arrived at Kyaikto on 7 April and gave necessary instructions to the Executive Officer of Township Development Committee and officials.

The minister heard reports on rural and urban roads and township development presented by the executive officer of Thaton Town ship Development Committee.

They proceeded to Hpaan in Kayin State and met officials of Kayin State and Township Development Committees. He gave instructions on rural development tasks, linking roads and development projects.

(8)  Myanmar Five Star Line and Jardine Feeder Services Ltd sign agreement

YANGON, 9 Apr - Myanmar Five Star Line of Ministry of Transport and Jardine Feeder Services Ltd signed an agreement on Myanmar Container Services agreement extension at Karaweik Palace at noon today, attended by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, Managing Director of Myanma Five Star Line U Khin Maung Kyi, directors general, managing directors, principals, heads of department and officials of the ministry and guests.

Managing Director U Khin Maung Kyi and Director of Jardine Feeder Services Ltd Mr Siaw Hool Chuan explained the works.

They signed the agreement of Myanmar Container Services agreement extension and exchanged the documents.

(9)  Basic Printing Technology Course No 2/98 concludes

YANGON, 9 Apr - Basic Pinning Technology Course No 2/98 of Printing and Publishing Enterprise under the Ministry of Information concluded at the training hall of GTC Printing Factory in Aung San, Insein Township, yesterday morning with an address by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein.

Also present were Director-General of Myanma Radio and Television U Khin Maung Htay, Director-General of Information and Public Relations Department U Chit Naing, General Manager of PPE U Saw Myint, Head of Office of the Ministry of Information U Khin Maung Myint, Advisers to the ministry U Kyi Lwin and U Kyaw Sunn, course instructors, trainees and guests.

(10)  Information, Entertainment, Record Subcommittee meets

YANGON, 9 Apr - Information, Entertainment and Record Subcommittee of the Committee for Perpetual All-round Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda held a meeting at Myanma Radio and TV the afternoon.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of the Subcommittee Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein said though Shwehtidaw Hoisting Ceremony of the Pagoda had been completed successfully, formation of subcommittees is required to continue to carry out the task for perpetual all-round renovation of the pagoda sector wise.

YANGON, 9 Apr - Thirty-eight members resigned from National League for Democracy of North Dapein Village, Hlegu Township, Yangon Division.

Thirty-eight members of North Dapein Village NLD, Hlegu Township, Yangon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Hlegu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 7 April 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD

(12)  10 members resign from Sangyoung Township NLD

YANGON, 9 Apr - Ten members resigned from National League for Democracy of Sangyoung Townships Yangon Division.

Ten members of Sangyoung Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Sangyoung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 30 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
