(1)  The Graduation Parade of the 40th Intake of the Defence Services Academy held

YANGON, 7 Apr - The Graduation Parade of the 40th Intake of the Defence Services Academy was held at the DSA Parade Ground in PyinOoLwin this morning, with and address by Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe.

(2)  Senior General Than Shwe meets officials of Mandalay, Sagaing, Magway Divisions

YANGON, 7 Apr - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe met officials of Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway Divisions at the meeting hall of Central Command in Mandalay at 8.10 am yesterday.

He gave guidance on progress of agriculture.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the Council, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers, senior military officers, the Mayor of Mandalay, heads of department, chairmen of District Peace and Development Councils of Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway Divisions, members of the Division Agricultural Supervisory Committees and chairmen of Township Peace and Development Councils.

The Senior General said as agriculture is the nation's main economic structure, all should strive for the development of agriculture as the base and all-round progress of other sectors of the economy as well in accord with the economic objective.

There was significant progress in the agriculture as the four-year plan from 1992-93 to 1995-96 had been laid down and implemented.

(3)  Secretary-1 attends sixth cash donation ceremony for construction of Thabyinnyu Pagoda

YANGON, 7 Apr - The sixth cash donation ceremony for the construction of Thabyinnyu Pagoda was held at Dhammay Thaka Sarthintaik on Ward 5 in Mayangon Township, Yangon Division, this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Dhammay Thaka Sarthintaik Padana Nayaka Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Sayagyi Daw Dhammaythi, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and well-wishers.

Before the ceremony, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the foundation laying ceremony for the construction of Thabyinnyu Pagoda and sprinkled scented water on the foundation.

(4)  12,000 eligible voters of Thongwa submit petitions expressing no confidence in U Lwin, representative-elect of NLD

YANGON, 7 Apr - Eligible voters of No 1 Myoma Station of Thongwa Township, Yangon Division, submitted signed petitions expressing no confidence in U Lwin who was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy at the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Thongwa Township Constituency-1, and no support to him at the ceremony held at the independence sports ground in Ward 1, Thongwa Township, on 2 April morning.

Present on the occasion were over 12,000 eligible voters of Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 11 and 12, Sabeigyaung, Kyonkyeik, Latpannan Khale and Tagaw Villages of No 1 Myoma Station area, Thongwa Township.

Members of the panel of chairmen of the ceremony were retired head of Paddy Purchase Centre of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading, (Technician Grade 4) U Thaung Shwe, retired head of Cooperative Department U Kyaw Min and retired headmaster of Basic Education Primary School of Ward 1 U Kyaw Nyein, Daw Thin Thin Nwe and Daw Phyu Phyu Khaing acted as masters of ceremonies.

(5)  9,466.06 acres of illicit poppy plantations destroyed Nov '98 to 14 Mar '99

YANGON, 7 Apr - The State Peace and Development Council is resolved to eradicate narcotic drugs as national duty, and the combined teams comprising members of Tatmadaw columns, local intelligence units, Myanmar Police Force and residents since November 1998 have been destroying poppy plantations illegally grown in remote areas of Shan State.

In February and March 1999, a total of 2,371.60 acres of poppy plantations-247 acres in Muse Township, 832.03 acres in Tangyang Township, 113.80 acres in Hopang Township, 679.50 acres in Kunlong Township, 94.47 acres in Kutkai Township, 23.80 acres in Laukkai Township, 244.75 acres in Kongyan Township and 74 acres in Namkham Township in Shan State (North), 23.25 acres in Waingmaw Township, 35.5 acres in Machanbaw Township, two acres in Tanaing Township and 1.5 acres in Putao Township in Kachin State-were destroyed.

Acreage of illicit poppy plantation destroyed from November 1998 to 14 March 1999 are as follows:

A total of 9,466.06 acres or 3,833.757 hectares of poppy plantations illegally grown in Shan State (North), Shan State (South), Shan State (East), Kayah and Kachin States and Sagaing Division have been destroyed in poppy cultivation season, and efforts continue to search and destroy the illegal poppy plantations.

(6)  Secretary-1 attends review meeting on success of Shwehtidaw hoisting ceremony at Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 7 Apr - Patron of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Southern Stairway of the Pagoda at 4.30 pm today.

They were welcomed by Chairman of Work Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and members of the work committee, Myanmar Engineers and members of the Board of Trustees.

First, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt paid homage to Buddha images at the Old Museum Tazaung.

Then, a review meeting on success of- Shwehtidaw hoisting ceremony at Shwedagon Pagoda and offering of gold plates to Shwedagon Pagoda was held at the Old Museum Tazaung.

Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, Myanmar engineers, members of the Board of Trustees and officials reported tithe Secretary-1 on successful Shwehtidaw hoisting ceremony, works to be done, offering of gold plates (Shwethingan) and gold foils to Shwedagon Pagoda, renovation of religious buildings and to hold the consecration ceremony.

In giving instructions on the reports, after the Shwehtidaw hoisting ceremony, monks and people have pleasure and participants of work committees have carried out their assigned duties with the nobel generosity and unity, said, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

(7)  World Health Day observed

YANGON, 7 Apr - World Health Day was observed at Ottara Hall of Karaweik Palace this morning, with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Present on the occasion a were Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, the directors-general of departments under the ministry, rectors, medical superintendents, personnel of UN agency, chairmen of Non-Governmental Organizations and officials.

The minister said health is medicine of longevity, a brick layer of foundation for progress of the nation and source of community welfare service. In order to fully enjoy health, the World Health Organization is making endeavours in cooperation with our country. The World Health Day is held on 7 April yearly after approval of the basic principles of WHO on that day, he said.

(8)  Workshop on Scientific Instrumentation held

YANGON, 7 Apr - The Workshop on Scientific Instrumentation jointly sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology and the Embassy of Republic of India was held at Hotel Equatorial on Alanpya Pagoda Road this morning.

It was attended by officials of the Embassy of the Republic of India and ministries of the Union of Myanmar and persons of various Myanmar business organizations.

Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing-Win and Ambassador of India Mr. Shyam Saran gave speeches.

Director of Central Scientific Instrumentation Organization Professor S Mohan explained reason of the workshop and answered the queries raised.

(9)  ANG International Ltd donates air-conditioner, garments to MMCWA

YANGON, 7 Apr - A ceremony to present donations worth K 140,000 to Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association by ANG International Ltd (Distributor of Nestle Foods Ltd.) of Thailand was held at MMCWA building at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthuma Road in South Okkalapa Township at 11 am today.

Present on the occasion were Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, members of Central Executive Committee and well-wishers.

Daw Sabei, wife of Chief Executive Officer of ANG International Ltd Mr Babu Noor, presented an air-conditioner, Sale Operation Manager U Naing Myo Mon of Nestle Foods Thailand Ltd 100 garments with bear brand for children and Nutritional Adviser Dr Khin Mya Aye 50 garments with bear brand used in cooking.

Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the well-wishers.

Business Development Manager Mr Trevor Reckerman of Nestle Foods (Thailand) explained the purpose of the donations.

YANGON, 7 Apr - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Executive Director of Asian Development Bank Mr Prasit Ungirt what called at his office at 11 am today.

Present at the call were Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar U Than Lwin and Director-General U Soe Linn of Foreign Economic Relations Department.

(11)  45 members resign from Mawlamyinegyun Township NLD

YANGON, 7 Apr - Forty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mawlamyinegyun Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Forty-five members of Mawlamyinegyun Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mawlamyinegyun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 19 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12)  Nine members resign from Mogok Township NLD

YANGON, 7 Apr - Nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mogok Township, Mandalay Division.

Four members of Mogok Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mogok Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 24 December 1998 and five members followed suit on 13 January 1999 totaling nine as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
