(1)  Secretary-1 inspects preparations for Htidaw hoisting ceremony at Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 3 Apr - Patron of the Committee for All-round perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Southern Stairway of the Pagoda at 3 pm today.

They were welcomed by Chairman of Work Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, work committee members, Myanmar Engineers and members of the Board of Trustees.

First, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt paid homage to Jade Buddha image at the Old Museum Tazaung.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected preparations for Htidaw hoisting ceremony and paid obeisance to Buddha images at Dhamma Zedi Tazaung.

Afterwards Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt paid homage to Hsutaungpyi Padamya Myetshin Buddha image on the upper terrace of the pagoda.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt also inspected renovation. of Tazaung where gold replica of Shwedagon Pagoda and jade Buddha image are to be kept and left there in the evening.

(2)  MV Jaya Transporter built by Myanma Shipyards handed over to Singapore company

YANGON, 3 Apr - A ceremony to hand over 50-metre vehicle carrier, MV Jaya Transporter built by Myanma Shipyards to Jaya Marine Lines Pte Ltd of Singapore was held at Nan Thida Jetty this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Ministers at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel and Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister. for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore Kyi Min senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the directors-general and managing, directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Transport, departmental officials, Commercial Manager Mr B H Lau of Jaya Marine Lines Pte Ltd of Singapore and officials.

The Secretary-1 and party were conducted round MV Jaya Transporter by Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and the managing director of Myanma Shipyards.

Managing Director of MS U Percy Maung Maung and Commercial Manager Mr B H Lau of Singapore then signed the related documents and exchanged them.

MS and Jaya Marine Lines Pte Ltd of Singapore signed the contract to build two 50-metre long carriers on 26 May 1997. Building of the carriers started on 15 August the same year and one of them was launched on 20 November 1998.

(3)  Secretary-1 attends opening ceremony of MWEA Tower

YANGON, 3 Apr - MWEA Tower was opened on Shwedagon Pagoda Road here this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The tower was built by the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development and the Myanmar Women's Entrepreneurs Association (MWEA) on mutual benefit.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, senior military officers, the Ambassador of Lao People's Democratic Republic, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, officials of women's well-wisher organizations, patrons, advisers, the chairperson and executives of MWEA, members and guests.

The Secretary-l unveiled the signboard of the tower.

Director-General U Arnt Kyaw of DHSHD, the Chairperson of MWEA and Chairman of Catena Construction U Hla Kyi formally opened the tower.

Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than also opened "Myanmar Shwepwedaw - 1360" there.

Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe made a speech on the occasion, saying DHSHD is undertaking establishment of industrial zones and cities and implementation of modern housing projects. Mainly, it is making Yangon to become a modern city, applying three ways and means.

The three are; removing squatters and building new towns to relocate them, implementing hut-to-apartment project for improvement of living standard of the people and replacing old buildings and residential wards with modern ones which conform to the characteristics of a city, the deputy minister explained.

By using the third way, DHSHD and MWEA jointly built the tower on the plot of former Dagon Township Peace and Development Council Office, he said, expressing his appreciation of success of Myanmar women in implementing that project.

The 12-storey MWEA Tower is built on a plot of 0.394 acres where a two-storey building was formerly located. The ground and first floors are designated for business undertakings and the rest are for offices and apartments. The building has a car park with space for 47 cars. The tower was equipped with two lifts and generator for emergency use.

The housing complex is owned by residents.

The deputy minister also expressed thanks to officials concerned who helped complete the tower.

Afterwards, Chairperson of MWEA Daw Sein Sein explained emergence of the tower and then handed documents related to the building to U Arnt Kyaw.

(4)  Secretary-2 inspects projects in Letpadan and Minhla Township

YANGON, 3 Apr - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo today inspected Myitmakha Bridge Project, land reclamation works in wetlands and agriculture projects in Letpadan and Minhla Townships in Bago Division.

Accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of the Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, deputy ministers, Commander of No 66 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Aung Min. Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint, and departmental heads, the Secretary-2 arrived at 250-ton Rice Mill in Letpadan.

Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan reported to him on the salient points about the rice mill, efforts to produce firewood substitute paddy husk briquettes and other works.

Later, the Secretary-2 inspected production of paddy husk briquettes and other activities.

He gage instructions on disseminating technology on production of paddy husk briquettes in May and organizing an exhibition on the activities for production of firewood substitute fuel.

'The Secretary-2 and party later proceeded to the bridge being built over Myitmakha River on Letpadan-Tharawaw Road.

Deputy Superintending Engineer U Soe Myint of Public Works Bridge Project Special Group 13 reported to the m on the work in progress.

Managing Director of Public Works U Shwe Win and Chairman of Thayawady District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ohn Myint also reported on the provisions for the bridge project.

(5)  Daw Kyaing Kyaing attends fifth special market festival at Women's Development Centre

YANGON, 3 Apr - The fifth special market festival sponsored by Social Welfare Department of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and Myanmar Hwa Phu International co Ltd was held at Women's Development Centre on Thanlwin Road in Kamayut Township this morning, attended by Daw Kyaing Kyaing, wife of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe.

Accompanied by Daw Mya Mya San, wife of Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, and Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Daw Kyaing Kyaing arrived at the Women's Development Centre at 8.30 am today.

They were welcomed by Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Daw Khin Cho Oo, wife of Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, wives of members of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Ministers and Ministers, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and wife Daw Aye Pyi Wai Khin and officials.

Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and wife presented gifts to Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party.

Then, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and Daw Mya Mya San signed in the visitors book. Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party inspected garments produced by Hwa Phu International Co Ltd and jewellery, handicrafts and Myanmar traditional food by jewellery work shop, Women's Vocational Training School, Mary Chapman's School for the Deaf, Women' s Training School, Kaba Aye Youth Training School, Home Science Training School for Girls, Yangon School for the Blind (Khawegyan) and School for the Blind (Kyimyindine) of Social Welfare Department at the special market festival.

Modern music band of Yangon School for the Blind (Khawegyan) entertained the visitors with the songs at the festival.

(6)  Excavation of ancient kilns inspected in Twantay

YANGON, 3 Apr - Minister for Culture U Win Sein, accompanied by Director-General of the Department of Archaeology U Nyunt Han, Adviser at the Department of Archaeology Dr Myo Thant Tin and officials, inspected excavation of the ancient kilns for making glazed utensils near Kangyigon Village in Twantay Township, Yangon Division, today.

On arrival at the site, the minister and party were welcomed by Commanding Officer of the Regional Battalion Maj Maung Maung Aye, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Aye Kyaing and members, Secretary of Township Union Solidarity and Development Association U Thein Zaw Myint and members, and officials of the Department of Archaeology.

The minister inspected the site.

At the site office, Adviser Dr Myo Thant Tin reported to Minister for Culture U Win Sein on the history of glaze industry in foreign countries and in Myanmar and glaze technology in Myanmar, and Staff Officer Daw Baby on the kilns being excavated there.

(7)  Eight members resign from Singu Township NLD

YANGON, 3 Apr - Eight members resigned from National League for Democracy of Singu Township, Mandalay Division.

Four members of Singu Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Singu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 20 January 1999 and four members did so on 27 January 1999, totaling eight, as they no longer wished to participate in party Politics of NLD.

(8)  32 members resign from Singaing Township NLD

YANGON, 3 Apr - Thirty-two members resigned from National League for Democracy of Singaing Township, Mandalay Division.

Thirty-two members of Singaing Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Singaing Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 26 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  Japanese cultural delegation arrives

YANGON, 3 Apr - Under the Myanmar-Japan cultural exchange programme, a nine member Japanese Takarazuka Kagekidan troupe arrived here by air this evening to present their performances in Myanmar.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Director-General U Tin Htoo of Pine Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture and officials of the Japanese Embassy.

(10)  Secretary-2 attends ancient PhaungdawU Pagoda Htidaw-hoisting ceremony in Letpadan Township

YANGON, 3 Apr - The Shwehtidaw-hoisting ceremony of the ancient PhaungdawU Pagoda was held at the Pagoda in Kyeedaw Village, Letpadan Township, Bago Division, today.

Present at the ceremony were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of the Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister at the Prime Minister' s office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Thein Aung, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Commander of No 66 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Aung Min. (11)  Shwedagon Pagoda Htidaw hoisting ceremony live on TV

YANGON, 3 Apr - The Shwehtidaw hoisting ceremony of Shwedagon Pagoda will be held from 4 to 6 April. A ceremony to hoist the steel frame of first tier atop the pagoda will be telecast live on TV Myanmar beginning 7 am on 4 April morning.

(12)  Energy delegation back from Singapore

YANGON, 3 Apr - Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi left for Singapore to inspect preparation for construction of FSO vessel and natural gas production platform of Yedagun Natural Gas Project on 2 April.

Myanmar delegation visited Sembawang Marine and Gas Offshore Engineering where they were welcomed by Manager Mr. Neil Cross of Premier Petroleum Myanmar Ltd and Senior Vice-President Mr. Prarn Raj of Sembawang Marine and Offshore Engineering.

Officials reported on construction of natural gas production platform, basic delta about design, quality of material, correctness of engineering facts and durability.

The minister asked about arrangements for transport of the platform to Myanmar.

The minister visited Keppel Shipyard where he was welcomed by Mr Neil Cross, Mr A Dutter of SBM Inc and Managing Director Mr Loh Wing Siew of Keppel Corporation.

Officials reported on construction of FSO and Turret System.

The minister inquired economic advantages by hiring of FSO Vessel and inspected progress of work on board MV Metsocon.

The minister and delegation members Director-General of Energy Planning Department U Soe Myint, Managing Director of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise U Kyaw Nyein and Deputy Director U Myint Htoo arrived back this evening.
