(1)  General Maung Aye fixes gold bells, gold leaves to Seinphudaw, Hngetmyatnadaw, tiers of Htidaw at Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 1 Apr - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Patron of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, arrived at Southern Stairway of the Pagoda at 6 am today.

They were welcomed by Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chairman of Leading Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Deputy Minister for Home affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Chairman of Work Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, Brig-Gen Saw Hla Min of Phugyi Station, work committee members Myanmar Engineers and members of the Board of Trustees.

(2)  Secretary-2 attends meeting on distribution and utilization of fuel oil

YANGON, 1 Apr - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended a coordination meeting on distribution and utilization of fuel oil in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Energy this morning.

Also present at the meeting were Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Soe Myint, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, Deputy Ministers for Energy U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen Thein Aung, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and department heads and guests.

(3)  Monbusho research students leave for Japan

YANGON, 1 Apr - The nine Monbusho research students from various ministries in Myanmar left here by air for Japan at 7 pm today.

They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha and Director (News) U Hla Tun Directors of Supreme Court U Tin Aye and U Thet Tun and relatives of research students.

The nine Monbusho research students are Assistant Medical Officer Dr Moe Kyaw of Ministry of Heath, Assistant Lecturers U Soe Myint Maung and Daw Mya Mya Khin of Ministry of Education, Head of Division U Aung Kyaw Soe of Ministry of Industry-l, Factory Manager Daw Tin Tin Htoo of Ministry of Industry-2, Deputy Staff Officer Daw Tin Nwe Soe of Supreme Court, Editor Daw Nu Nu Htwe of NPE, Ministry of Information, Demonstrator Daw Yu Yu Hlaing of Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and Mechanical Technician-1 U Min Lwin Tun of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications.

(4)  321 members resign from Kyauktan Township NLD

YANGON, 1 Apr - Three-hundred-twenty-one members of Kyauktan Township National League for Democracy, Yangon Division, collectively tendered their resignations of their own volition on 30 March 1999 at Ywale Monastery in Khanaung village in the township.

Three-hundred-twenty-one members of Kyauktan Township National League for Democracy, Yangon Division, collectively tendered their resignations as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

U Win Shwe, on behalf of 120 members of Khanaung village, U Myint Lwin, on behalf of 71 members of Mingalun village, U Thein Zaw, on behalf of 59 members of Naywechaung village, U San Htay, on behalf of 26 members of Myagaing village, U Hla Myint, on behalf of 26 members of Ase village, and U Khin Hla, on behalf of 19 members of Poba village, presented the letters of resignation to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Lu Maw.

(5)  Beverage Enterprise holds review meeting

YANGON, 1 Apr - A meeting to review the Beverage Enterprise's accomplishments of tasks in 1998-99 and discuss future plans was held at the Head office of the Beverage Enterprise of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism today with an address by Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.

The minister pointed out the need for the enterprise to constantly review the performance to exceed the income target of the ministry and to make adequate supply at the wine shops.

He also called on the officials to review the accomplishments and weaknesses and make ten per cent increase in the plan target for the forthcoming financial year.

He also gave suggestions on systematic use of electricity, prevention of loss and wastage and effective supervision of tasks.

Managing Director of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services U Kyi Tun and General Manager U Tint Swe of Beverage Enterprise discussed accomplishments of tasks in 1998-99.

Also present at the meeting were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and Director-General U Khin Maung Latt.

(6)  Chief of Staff (Army) inspects Armed Forces Day Commemorative Literary and Art Exhibition

YANGON, 1 Apr - Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, Chief of Bureau of Special Operations, Chief of Staff (Army) and Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Literary and Art Exhibition at Tatmadaw Hall on U Wisara Road in Dagon Township this evening.

The Secretary-2 was accompanied by Minister for National Planning and and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore Kyi Min, Chairman of the Committee for Organizing the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Literary and Art Exhibition Chief of Staff (Air) Brig-Gen Myint Swe, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Director of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint, Commander of No-3 Military Region Lt-Col Win Maung, officials of Observance Committee and Work Committee and departmental officials.

(7)  Myanmar following with great concern current situation in Yugoslavia Calls on all parties concerned to try and resolve issue through peaceful means

YANGON, 1 Apr - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today issued a Press release in connection with the current situation in Yugoslavia.

The following is the full text:

The Government of the Union of Myanmar has been following with great concern the current situation in Yugoslavia which has resulted in loss of lives of many innocent men, women and children.

Recent events have also shown that the conflict has the potential to spread to other countries in the region as well.

The Myanmar Government therefore calls on all parties concerned to try and resolve the issue through peaceful means, respect for the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and respect for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

(8)  MOC Chairman's Trophy Golf begins

YANGON, 1 Apr - Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman's Trophy Amateur Golf Tournament opened at Myanmar Golf Club, 9th Mile, Pyay Road, today.

Present at the opening ceremony were Chairman of MOC Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Member of MOC Chairman of Myanmar Golf Club Supervisors Committee Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Vice-Chairman of MOC Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, General Secretary of MOC Director-General of the Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw and officials, General Secretary of Myanmar Golf Federation U Aung Kyi and guests.

Brig-Gen Sein Win teed off to open the tournament.

In handicaps play, Tin Win was leading the game with 62 strokes, Lin Lin scored 65 strokes, Thein Aung 66 strokes, Nay Win Hlaing 66 strokes, Soe Moe Aung 67 strokes, Win Myint 67 strokes, Myo Myint Aung 67 strokes and Phyo Wai Aung 69 strokes.

In scratch play, Tun Hlaing scored 74 strokes, Zaw Paing 75 strokes and Ohn Myint 76 strokes.

In women's event, Thu Thu scored 71 strokes, Khin Mar Nyunt 79 strokes, Lay Lay 80 strokes and Myint Myint Zaw 81 strokes.

YANGON, 1 Apr - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met the seven-member delegation of Project Formulation Study Mission of Japan led by Mr Hiroshi Matsuura at his office this afternoon.

Present at the call were Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo and officials.

(10)  Coord meeting on holding Yangon Mayor's Maha Thingyan Festival

YANGON, 1 Apr - A coordination meeting on holding Yangon Mayor's Maha Thingyan Festival was held at the City Hall this morning, attended by Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay.

Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, YCDC Secretary Col Myint Aung, Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint, chairmen of District Peace and Development Councils, military region commanders and officials were also present.

Mayor U Ko Lay made a speech, followed by a general round of discussions about the festival.

Well-wishers presented K 19 million for providing cash and kind to social organizations on Thingyan Akyo Day.

The donations included K 10 million by Yangon City Bank Ltd, K 1 million by Shwethanlwin Co, K 500,000 each by U Maung Maung of Asia Express and U Shwe Kyaing of Wa Wa Win Construction, 2000 US dollars by Ganad Co.

(11)  22 members resign from Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township NLD

YANGON, 1 Apr - Twenty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township, Yangon Division.

Twenty-two members of Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township NLD, Yangon Division, on their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 31 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12)  Bicycles for MPF

YANGON, 1 Apr - A ceremony to donate fifty Hero bicycles to be used for crime prevention and investigation works to Myanmar Police Force by Evergreen Industries Limited was held at the Headquarters of MPF at 9 am today.

Managing Director of Evergreen Industries Limited Mr Akhtar explained about the donation.

Afterwards, Managing Director of Hero Cycle Limited (India) Mr Vijay Mujal presented fifty Hero bicycles to Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win who accepted the donation and thanked the donor.

Present on the occasion were Police Chief of Staff, Police Quartermaster-General, Police Adjutant-General, Police Battalions Control Commanders, Police officers, Police Commander of Yangon Division MPF, Police Commanders of Yangon North district MPF and Yangon West District MPF and officials of Evergreen Industries Limited.
