(1)  Senior General Than Shwe receives Singapore Deputy Prime Minister, delegation

YANGON, 30 Mar - Chairman or the state peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Sensor General Than Shwe received the visiting Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore Brig-Gen Lee Hsien Loong and goodwill delegation in the Credentials Hall of Pyithu Hluttaw at 3 pm today.

With the Senior General were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Ambassador of Myanmar to Singapore U Myo Myint and departmental heads.

With Brig-Gen Lee Hsien Loong and delegation was Ambassador of Singapore to Myanmar Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow.

(2)  Secretary-1 receives Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore

YANGON, 30 Mar - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received goodwill delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore Brig-Gen Lee Hsien Loong, who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 2 pm today.

Present on the occasion together with Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affair U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Ambassador of the Union of Myanmar to Singapore U Myo Myint and together with the visiting delegation was Ambassador of Singapore Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow.

(3)  Secretary-1 attends launching of 2nd National Sanitation Week

YANGON, 30 Mar - The launching ceremony of the Second National Sanitation Week 1999 was held at the International Business Centre this morning, with an address by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sons, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, members of National Health Committee, the deputy ministers, members of Central Work Committee for Second National Sanitation Week, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the directors-general and the managing directors of departments and enterprises, heads of departments under the Ministry of Health, the ambassadors, resident representatives of WHO, UNICEF and UN Agencies, officials of Non-Governmental Social Organizations and guests.

(4)  Singapore Deputy Prime Minister given presentation on Myanmar economy

YANGON, 30 Mar - An economic briefing for the visiting Deputy Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore and wife and delegation was held at Hotel Equatorial at 4 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Ministers at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman is Office Brig-Gen Abel and Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Ambassador of Myanmar to Singapore U Myo Myint, departmental officials and Ambassador of Singapore Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow.

Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin extended greetings to the guests, followed by a speech made by Brig-Gen Lee Hsien Loong.

Minister U Soe Tha briefed the visiting Deputy Prime Minister on Myanmar's economic strategy, Minister Brig-Gen Abel on infrastructure development in Myanmar and Brig-Gen Maung Maung on trade and investment opportunities.

The ministers also replied to questions of the guest.

(5)  Minister meets swimming team

YANGON, 30 Mar - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win met Myanmar swimming team which will participate in the 26th South East Asian Swimming Competition to be held in the Philippines from 2 to 4 April, at National Indoor Stadium-l in Thuwunna this evening.

The minister gave instructions on good performance for winning of medals. The team includes Assistant Director of Sports and Physical Education Institute U Nyunt Soe as leader and three swimmers.

Present also on the occasion were General Secretary of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, Adviser Col Ngo Ciin Pau and officials of Myanmar Swimming Federation.

Subject: Permission given to U Kyaw Khaing to resign as Pyithu Hluttaw representative elected from Taungup Township Constituency in Rakhine State

l.    U Kyaw Khaing of the National League for Democracy, Pyithu Hluttaw representative elected at the Multiparty Democracy General Election from Taungup Township Constituency in Rakhine State, submitted of his own volition to this Commission that he be permitted to resign because of his old age and health and he no longer wished to participate in party politics.

2.    Upon the above-mentioned submission, this Commission hereby announces that U Kyaw Khaing has been permitted to resign from being Hluttaw representative-elect of Taungup Constituency effective today under Section 11 (e) of the Pyithu Hluttaw Election Law.

YANGON, 30 Mar - Fifty-nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Thaton Township, Mon State.

Fifty-nine members of Thaton Township NLD, Mon State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Thaton Township Multiparty Democracy

General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 5 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(8)  Former Diet member, delegation meet Chairman of Election Commission

YANGON, 30 Mar - A delegation led by former Diet member of Japan Mr Shigeto Nagano met Chairman of Multiparty Party Democracy Election Commission U Ba Htay and members at his office this morning.

With Mr Nagano of USA-Japan Policy Co-ordination Project of PHP Research Institute were former Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia Mr Yukio Imagawa, former Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar Mr Youichi Yamaguchi, Director Dr David Steinberg of Asian Affairs Department of Georgetown University, Washington DC, and party.

Also present together with Chairman U Ba Htay were members U San Maung and U Kyaw Nyunt and Secretary U Aye Maung.

The chairman and members replied to questions of the delegation.

(9)  Books, magazines donated to IPRD libraries

YANGON, 30 Mar - A ceremony to donate various kinds of books and magazines for the libraries of Information and Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Information by well-wishers was held at IPRD Head Office this afternoon.

The donations included 320 books worth K 32,000 by construction contractor U Soe Naing of Hline Township, 330 religious books worth K 13,700 by writer Kyaw Nanda Aung of Pazundaung, 500 copies of Lapyiwun magazine worth K 50,000 by U Aung Hla of Pan Aung Sarpay, Kyaukmyaung, Tamway, 350 copies of Kyipwayay magazine worth K 38,500 by U Myat Khaing of Kyipwayay journal, Pabedan, 386 copies of Myanmar magazines and 530 various kinds of books in English version worth K 1,593,960 by Librarian Daw Tin Phone Nwe of Universities Central Library, 320 books worth K 44,800 by U Thein Toe, on behalf of UE Myanmar Ltd of Seikkantha Street, Kyauktada, 320 books worth K 80,000 by U Hla Toe, on behalf of dentist Dr Aung Kyaw of Taunggyi, 4,004 books and magazines by Chief Editor U Win Pe (Monywa Win Pe) of Sarpay Beikman and staff, 100 books worth K 3,000 by U Khin Maung Myint of Hlegu and 500 poetry books worth K 17,500 by Lt-Col Ohn Maung (Retd) (Myinmu Maung Naing Moe).

Director-General U Chit Naing accepted the donations.

(10)  Exhibition at Defence Services Museum continues

YANGON, 30 Mar - The exhibition in commemoration of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day continued at the Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road today.

The showrooms of Twelve Objectives, Nation Building endeavors, military commands, ministries and directorates of the Ministry of Defence are staged at the museum.

Progress of tasks in years describing with the aid of charts, documentary photographs related to social, economic, culture and education affairs are shown at the showrooms of South-West Command, Ministry of Cooperatives, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Industry-2 in the museum.

Members of Dalla Township Union Solidarity and Development Association, members of Sangha, people and students visited the booths of the Defence Services Museum today.

The Defence Services Museum will remain open to the public from 9 am to 6 pm daily till 4 April. Admission is free.

(11)  K 6.49m market opened in Panlong

YANGON, 30 Mar - A newly built market was opened in Panlong, Loilem District, southern Shan State on 27 March.

The market. with 504 shops was built at a cost of K 6.49 million.

Brig-Gen Thein Lwin of Loilem Station, officials concerned and local people attended the opening ceremony.

(12)  12 members resign from Kyaukse Township NLD

YANGON, 30 Mar - Twelve members resigned from die National League for Democracy of Kyaukse Township, Mandalay Division.

Twelve members of Kyaukse Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyaukse Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 18 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
