(1)  Secretary-1 receives officials of PHP Research Institute USA-Japan Policy Coordination Project

YANGON, 29 Mar - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received former member of the House of Councillors of Japan Mr Shigeto Nagano of USA-Japan Policy Coordination Project organized by PHP Research Institute, former Japanese .Ambassador to Cambodia Mr Yukio Imagawa, former Japanese Ambassador to the Union of Myanmar Mr Youichi Yamaguchi, Director of Asian Affairs Department of the Georgetown University in Washington Dr David I Steinberg and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, and Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

The Japanese delegation was accompanied by Japanese Ambassador to the Union of Myanmar Mr Kazuo Asakai.

(2)  Shwe Thanlwin Co Ltd presents five ambulances to National Health Committee

YANGON, 29 Mar - Shwe Thanlwin Company Limited presented five ambulances to the National Health Committee today at the Medical Research Department, attended by Chairman of NHC Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, directors-general and officials of the departments under the Ministry Health, officials of Shwe Thanlwin Company Limited and guests.

(3)  Secretary-2 inspects construction of Aung Zeya Bridge

YANGON, 29 Mar - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected construction of Aung Zeya Bridge across Hline River this afternoon.

The 3,786-foot bridge will link Insein Township and Hlinethaya Township.

The Secretary-2, accompanied by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura' Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and officials, inspected building of piers in Insein Township.

Superintending Engineer U Khin Maung Aye reported on measures undertaken for construction of the bridge and progress of work.

Deputy Minister U Pe Than reported on waterway of Hline River and assistance of the Ministry of Transport.

Joint Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee Col Myint Aung, Director-General of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw and Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Khin Maung Kyaw reported on arrangements for resettlement of houses and markets in the project area.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on supervision for durability of the bridge. He met experts from the People's Republic of China at the construction site.

Personnel are making concerted efforts for completion of the bridge as scheduled.

(4)  Minister for Foreign Affairs receives Japanese delegation

YANGON, 29 Mar - Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung received Japanese delegation headed by ex-member of the House of Councillors Mr Shigeto Nagano at the former's office at 1 pm today.

They discussed matters of mutual cooperation and interest between the two countries.

(5)  62 members resign from Taze Township NLD

YANGON 29 Mar - Sixty-two members resigned from National League for Democracy of laze Township, Sagaing Division.

Sixty-two members of Taze Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending loners of resignation to Taze Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 13 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(6)  36th ISD Women's and Men's tennis Championships opened

YANGON 29 Mar - Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win opened the 36th Inter-State/Division Women's and Men's Tennis Championships at Theinbyu Tennis Court this morning.

Also present on the occasion were Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of Sports and Physical Education Department and officials, President of Myanmar Tennis Federation U Ba Tun and executives, Adviser to the ministry Col Ngo Ciin Pau and athletes.

Sagaing Division women' s and Yangon Division men's teams handed over last year's championship shields to Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win made a speech and formally opened the championships.

Then, the teams played first-day matches.

(7)  49 members resign from Natmauk Township NLD

YANGON, 29 Mar - Forty-nine members resigned from National League for Democracy of Natmauk Township, Magway Division.

Forty-nine members of Natmauk Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Natmauk Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 23 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(8)  Genesis 1 Knee System surgical operation performed at Defence Services Orthopaedic Hospital

YANGON, 29 Mar - The surgical operation in accord with the Total Knee Replacement System (Genesis I Knee System) performed by a combined team of medical professors and surgeons from Fortune International Limited of the Defence Services Medical Unit and the Smith and Nephew Pte Ltd of Singapore took place at the Defence Services Orthopaedic Hospital in Mingaladon today.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han and Commandant of Defence Services Orthopaedic Hospital Col Than Myint were among those who observed the surgical operation.

Before the operation, Professor Lee Eng Hin of the National University Hospital of Singapore explained the salient points about the Total Knee Replacement System and operation.

Later, Professor Lee Eng Hin and the surgeons of the Defence Services Orthopaedic Hospital performed the operation.

It was the first time to perform a surgical operation with Genesis I Knee System in cooperation with the foreigner Professor.

(9)  Minister for Mines receives PRC officials

YANGON, 29 Mar - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint received officials of the People's Republic of China led by Chairman of Yunan Machinery Import, Export Corporation Mr Wu Wen Kuan at his office at 2 pm today.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister U Myint Thein and officials.

(10)  Minister for Health inspects YGH

YANGON, 29 Mar - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo, Director-General of Health Department Dr Wan Maung and Director-General of Medical Science Department Dr Kyaw Myint inspected Yangon General Hospital this afternoon.

The minister was conducted-round the Traumatic Ward, Intensive Care Unit and Neuro Ward by Medical Superintendent Dr Taik Wan and specialists.

The minister met patients and gave instructions to officials on getting ready for treatment.
