(1)  Secretary-1 inspects jade Buddha image, casting of gold replica of Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 28 Mar - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the Myanma Gems Enterprise of Ministry of Mines on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

They were welcomed by Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo and officials.

First, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt paid reverence to jade Buddha image, which is 30 inches high in Bumiphathamudra, to be kept at Shwedagon Pagoda.

Officials reported to the Secretary-l on the carving of jade Buddha image.

The Secretary-l gave instructions to officials.

Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the casting of gold replica of Shwedagon Pagoda which is 45 inches high.

Officials reported to the Secretary-1 on their work.

Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave necessary instructions and left there in the morning.

(2)  Leading Committee for Observance of 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day holds review meeting

YANGON, 28 Mar - The Leading Committee for Observance of the 1999 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day held a review meeting in Saya San Hall, Kyaikkasan Grounds, today, with an address by Chairman of the Leading Committee Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present at the meeting were Chairman of the Management Committee for Observance of the 1999 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Brig-Gen Myint Swe, deputy ministers, senior military officers, directors, Parade Commander Brig-Gen Aung Min and column commanders, Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, officials of Fire Services Department, Myanmar Red Cross Society, departmental officials and guests.

In his address, Lt-Gen Tin Oo thanked various committees, Tatmadaw members and all those who participated in the tasks for the Day and called for their assessment and suggestions.

He said that based on the assessment and suggestions, work will have to be done successfully for the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, and spoke of the need to organize a grand parade every year.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than spoke words of thanks, followed by a general round of discussions.

(3)  Secretary-3 attends opening ceremony of new building of Co-operative Bank Head Office

YANGON, 28 Mar - The opening ceremony of the new building of Head Office of Co-operative Bank Limited (CB-Bank) was held at the bank on Strand Road in Latha Township at 9 am today, attended by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint.

Also present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Co-operatives U Aung San, Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Attorney-General U Khin Maung Aye, Adviser at the State Peace and Development Council Office U Kyi Aye, Patron of Foreign Corespondents Club U Sein Win, directors-general and managing directors of the ministry, chairmen and members of Board of Directors, chairmen of Cartel of Co-operative Syndicates, Chairman of Board of Directors of Co-operative Bank U Win Sein and members of Board of Directors, staff and guests.

Vice-Chairman of Board of Directors of Co-operative Bank U Khin Maung Aye explained about the Co-operative Bank.

(4)  124 members resign from Thakayta Township NLD

YANGON, 28 Mar - A ceremony to present resignation letters of 124 members of Thakayta Township National League for Democracy, Yangon Division, was held in the hall of Thakayta Township Peace and Development Council on 26 March 1999 morning.

A total of 124 members including Vice-Chairman of Thakayta Township NLD U Mya, if their own volition, had sent their resignations to the party concerned as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD. They handed over their resignation letters to the Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission at Township Peace and Development Council Office at 9 am on 26 March 1999.

(5)  Yuzana family holds second collective ordination ceremony

YANGON, 28 Mar - The second collective ordination ceremony of Yuzana family was held with the sponsorship of the Ministry of Religious Affairs at Kaba Aye today, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Altogether 1,000 men were ordained as monks at the second collective ordination ceremony.

Also present at the ceremony in Maha Pasana Cave were the Vice-Chairman Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, member Sayadaws, members of the Sangha, and 1,000 newly-ordained monks, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, officials of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Yuzana family and specially invited guests.

Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Pannindabhivamsa invested the congregation with the Five Precepts.

Afterwards, Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited parittas.

Later, the Secretary-l and Yuzana family members offered alms to the Sayadaws.

Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa supplicated on religious matters.

Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Acinnabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

After that, well-wishers presented offertories to the 1,000 new monks and offered day meals to them at the three storey soonsarkyaung.

The Secretary-l inspected the newly-built hostel for the patron Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and paid respects to Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Pannindabhivamsa.

(6)  Secretary-2 attends meeting of Rice Millers Association

YANGON, 28 Mar - The tenth annual meeting for 1997-98 of Myanmar Rice Millers Association was held at Karaweik Palace, Kandawgyi, this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present at the meeting were Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Brig-Gen Myint Swe, Deputy Ministers for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint and Brig-Gen Kyaw San, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, President of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry U Khin Maung Yi and executive committee members, Chairman of Myanmar Rice Millers Association U Win Myint and executive committee members, department heads, members of MRMA and guests.

(7)  Seven EC members resign from Dawbon Township NLD

YANGON, 28 Mar - Seven Executive Committee members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Dawbon Township, Yangon Division, on 25 March 1999.

Seven EC members including the Vice-Chairman of Dawbon Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Dawbon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 25 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD. They were Vice-Chairman U Kyi Shein, Third-Chairman U Myat Kyaw, EC members U Aung Than, U Aung Gyi and U Soe Win, Township in-charge for Youth Group Daw Tin Shwe and member of Supporting Committee for EC and member of Youth Group Daw Nu Nu Swe.

Seven members including the vice-chairman of Dawbon Township NLD handed over their resignation letters to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission at 10.50 am on 25 March 1999.

(8)  291 tourists arrive by mv Silver Cloud

YANGON, 29 Mar - Under the arrangement of Myanma Tourism Service and Silver Sea Cruise Co Ltd of the US, the luxury cruise liner mv Silver Cloud with 291 tourists aboard arrived at Bo Aung Kyaw Wharf No-1 this afternoon.

They were welcomed there by General Manager of Myanma Hotels and Tourism U Htay Aung and officials.

The tourists visited the Shwedagon Pagoda and the National Museum.

At night, the cultural troupe of Myanma Tourism Service entertained them on board.

On 29 March, they will go sightseeing in Bago, Bagan and Mandalay.

On 30 March, the luxury cruise liner mv Silver Cloud will leave here.

(9)  Myanmar dignitaries and diplomats play friendly golf

YANGON, 28 Mar - Myanmar dignitaries and heads of foreign diplomatic mission played a friendly golf at Defence Services Golf Club in Mingaladon this morning.

The ministers, deputy ministers, Dean of Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham and heads of missions took part in he friendly golf.

After the game, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung presented prizes to title winners individually and hosted lunch to the participants.

(10)  CPA certificates presented

YANGON, 28 Mar - A ceremony to present certificates of Certified Public Accountant and Diploma Accountancy Course of Myanmar Accountancy Council was held at the training school of Auditor-General's office this morning.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar Accountancy Council Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye, Vice-Chairman U Khin Win and members, Chairman of Course Supervisory Committee Director-General of A-G's Office Daw Thin Thin and officials.

Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye delivered a speech.

Brig-Gen Tin Aye and officials presented certificates to trainees.

Member of Myanmar Accountancy Council CPA Financial Consultant U Hla Tun presented K 500,000 for MAC award and education fund and Financial Consultant U Kyaw Tin K 100,000 in memory of his late father Chairman of the Council of Inspectors (Retd) U Ohn Tin.

(11)  Military Attaches visit showrooms at Defence Services Museum

YANGON, 28 Mar - Military attaches of the respective embassies visited the booths opened in commemoration of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day at the Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning.

First, Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win extended greetings to the military attaches in the hall of Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute (DSMHRI).

Director of DSMHRI Col Ye Htut explained salient points about the booths displayed at the museum.

Dean of the Military Attaches Military Attache of the Russian Federation Col Vladimir I Kontchakov expressed words of thanks and presented gifts to Director of DSMHRI Col Ye Htut.

The Tatmadaw senior officers and their wives, military attaches and their wives and families had the photographs taken.

Then, Col Ye Htut and officials conducted them round the museum.

The military attaches and party presented gifts to officials of the booth of Tatmadaw (Air).
