(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Bangladesh

YANGON, 26 Mar - On the occasion of the anniversary of the Independence Day of the People's Republic of Bangladesh which falls on 26 March 1999, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent messages of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Shahabuddin Ahmed, President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, and to Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

(2)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe accepts credentials of Ambassador of Malaysia

YANGON, 25 Mar - Dato' Mohamad bin Noh, newly accredited Ambassador of Malaysia to the Union of Myanmar, presented his credentials to Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10 am today.

Also presented on the occasion were Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(3)  Secretary-1 meets members of House of Representatives of Japan

YANGON, 25 Mar - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received members of the House of Representatives Ms Kazuko Nose and Ms Akiko Yamanaka of Japan, Ms Kitapata of Asia Population and Development Association and Ms Kiyoki Ikedami of International Planned Parentshood Federation at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 11.15 am today.

Also present together with the Secretary-1 were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai.

(4)  Secretary-2 tours Mon and Kayin States

YANGON, 25 Mar - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo met departmental officials and employees in Kayin and Mon States and gave instructions on development of the agriculture sector and regional development on 23 and 24 March.

The Secretary-2, together with ministers, deputy ministers and senior military officers, left for Hpa-an, Kayin State, by Tatmadaw aircraft.

They were welcomed there by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Myint Aung, Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Saw Khin Soe, Tactical Operations Commander of No 22 LID Col Hla Tun and departmental officials.

The Secretary-2 and party went to Zwegabin Hall in Hpa-an, and met members of Mon State and Kayin State Agricultural Supervisory Committees and departmental officials and employees from Kayin State, Hpa-an District and Townships.

The Secretary-2 called on all to submit works for regional development and the agricultural sector and requirements.

Commander Maj-Gen Myint Aung reported on cultivation of summer and monsoon paddy in Mon State, arrangements to extend cultivation works, cultivation of beans and pulses, oil crops, kitchen crops, sugarcane and perennial crops and arrangements for reclamation of vacant, fallow and virgin lands.

Col Saw Khin Soe reported on sufficience in rice for local people as a result of extension of summer and monsoon paddy cultivation in Kayin State, purchase of over 420,000 baskets of paddy sold by the local people conscientiously and arrangements for reclamation of vacant, virgin and fallow lands.

Manager of Kayin State Myanma Agricultural Service U Hla Myo, Manager of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise U Aung Kyaw Min and Deputy Director of Irrigation Department U Hla Myint reported on progress achieved in cultivation of various kinds of crops, cultivation of rubber, oil palm and water supply for agriculture.

The Secretary-2 and party went to Phayagon Nyeinchanye Ywathit in Hpa-an on 24 March morning.

They were welcomed there by Phado Aung San and party and families who exchanged arms for peace.

Col Saw Khin Soe reported on measures-taken for village development.

Maj-Gen Myint Aung gave a supplementary report.

Phado Aung San reported on requirements and appointment of health workers and U Saw Tha Muhe on regional nationalities and requirements for regional development works.

The ministers and the deputy ministers attended to their requirements.

The Secretary-2 stressed the importance of the production works such as agriculture and livestock breeding, regional peace and stability and national solidarity.

(5)  Deputy Prime Minister receives Chairman of Hocheng Corporation

YANGON, 25 Mar - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Chairman of Hocheng Corporation Mr Tony Chiu and party who called at his office at 10.30 am today.

Present at the call were officials of the Government Ounce and MIC Office.

(6)  Eleven more exchange arms for peace

YANGON, 25 Mar - The government has laid down the 12 political, economic and social objectives and is implementing them for the emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed new nation. At the same time, it extends welcome to the members of the armed groups who have exchanged arms for peace with sincere goodwill for national reconsolidation. It then fulfils their basic and social needs.

The 11-member group of Myeik/Dawei District Unity Front led by township in-charge Myo Win realizing their past misdeeds and the government's genuine goodwill exchanged arms for peace on 20 March.

They brought along with them eight assorted weapons, eight magazines and 252 rounds of ammunition and exchanged arms for peace at a Tatmadaw camp near Thara-twin village in Coastal Region Command area.

A ceremony to mark the exchanging of arms for peace was held in Paleyadana Hall in Myeik yesterday morning.

Deputy Commander of the command Col Tin Latt gave a speech.

He then presented to them K 850,000 provided by the public.

Also present on present occasion were military officers, local authorities, officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and Local people totaling 400.

(7)  40 members resign from Wakema Township NLD

YANGON, 25 Mar - Forty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Wakema Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Forty members of Wakema Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Wakema Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 6 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(8)  103 NLD members submit letters of resignation

YANGON, 17 Mar - Altogether 103 members of the National League for Democracy of Shaukgon, Kyathayai, Gyogon and Magyigon village-tracts in Tatkon Township, submitted letters of resignation to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission on 17 March.

The ceremony to tender resignation and demand cancellation of names from the list of members of NLD was organized in Shaukgon Village-tract.

Present there were Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Sein Hla and members and 1,500 people of the village-tracts.

NLD members U Tin Myint of Gyogon Village-tract and U Tun Hlaing of Magyigon Village-tract explained the purpose of resigning from being the party members.

U Hmat Tin of Kyathayai Village-tract and U Kyaw Myint of Shaukgon Village-tract also demanded cancellation of their names from the list of NLD party members as they had been enlisted as members of the party without their volition.

U Tin Myint of Gyogon Village presented the letters of resignation to the Chairman of the Township Multiparty Democracy General Onion Commission.

U Hmat Tin of Kyathayai Village-tract also submitted the list of 14 people who had been enlisted as members of the party without their consent to the Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(9)  15 members resign from TadaU Township NLD

YANGON, 25 Mar - Fifteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of TadaU Township, Mandalay Division.

Fifteen members of TadaU Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to TadaU Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 25 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  State-owned No-1 Steel Mill commissioned into service

YANGON, 25 Mar - The State-owned No-1 Steel Mill located near Kyaukswekyo Village, Aunglan Township, Magway Division, was commissioned into service today as a gesture hailing the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.

It was completed in 25 months of construction project which started work on 22 August 1996.

The 1,000-ton capacity mill can produce iron rods of various sizes and shapes and it is targeted to produce 250,000 tons per year.

It is one of the accomplishments of the State Peace and Development Council in endeavouring with momentum for Myanmar to become developed all-round, peaceful, tranquil and modern in accord with the political, economic and social objectives, and dams, reservoirs, roads, bridges and industries are being established all over the country for national economic development.

The opening ceremony of No-1 Steel Mill was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung and guests.

(11)  No-14 Export and Import Procedure Course concludes

YANGON, 25 Mar - The No-14 Export and Import Procedure Course conducted by the Ministry of Commerce concluded at the ministry today, with the closing address by Minister Maj-Gen Kyaw Than.

He said the ministry conducted courses for acquisition of know-how by the private sector aiming at efficient functioning of trade.

The lectures were given theoretically and practically and the lectures an banking, customs and port clearing agency would help the trainees a great deal in their work, he said.

Later, the minister presented certificates to the trainees individually.

(12)  Deputy Prime Minister receives President of Dae Won Paper Mill Co Ltd

YANGON, 25 Mar - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received President of Dae Won Paper Mill Co Ltd Mr Younglik Kim who called at his office at 9.30 am today.

Present at the call were officials of the Government Office, MIC Office and Ministry of Industry-1.
