(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Pakistan

YANGON, 23 Mar - On the occasion of the anniversary of Pakistan Day, which falls on 23 March 1999, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent messages of felicitations to His Excellency Muhammad Rafiq Tarar, President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and to His Excellency Mr Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

(2)  Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe sees off Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt leaving for Lao PDR

YANGON, 22 Mar - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe saw off Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt who left for Vientiane by special flight at Yangon International Airport at 6.15 am today to pay a goodwill visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic at the invitation of Vice-Prime Minister Mr Boungnang Volachith of LPDR.

The Secretary-l was also seen off at Yangon International Airport by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 LtGen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Lt-Gen Tin Tun and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Charge d'Affaires ai of the Embassy of LPDR  Mr Khamsway Keodalavong and embassy staff, senior military officers and department officials.

(3)  Cash assistance provided for in-service Tatmadaw men who sacrificed their limbs

YANGON, 22 Mar - The 33rd ceremony to provide cash assistance by Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise and well-wishers to the in-service Tatmadaw men who sacrificed their limbs was held at the City Hall this evening, addressed by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Col Saw Hla Min of Phugyi Station and senior military officers, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung pa, officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and department heads, officials of Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise, well-wishers and guests.

In his address, the Secretary-2 said it is known that out of 2,627 disabled Tatmadaw men, K 200,000 each has been provided for 110 disabled Tatmadaw men and K 100,000 each for 190 disabled Tatmadaw men with a view to enabling their children to continue to enjoy the assistance; he expressed his thanks to departmental officials, Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise and well-wishers for their contributions towards providing cash assistance.

(4)  Japanese Ambassador's wife and party donate K 600,000 to MMCWA

YANGON, 22 Mar - A ceremony to donate cash towards the funds of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association by Chairperson of embassy staff's wives of the Japanese Embassy in Myanmar wife of the Ambassador of Japan Mrs Taeko,Asakai and party was held at MMCWA building at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthuma Robin South Okkalapa Township ibis morning.

Vice-Chairperson of MMCM Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe accepted K 600,000 donated by Chairperson Mrs Tacko Asakai and presented a certificate of honour to her.

Afterwards, the wife of the Japanese Ambassador and party visited Children Development Centre and Domestic Science School sponsored by MMCWA.

Today's donations included a water cooler worth K 50,000 and medicines worth K 20,000 donated by U Myat Thin Aung Daw Khin Myint Myint and family of Aung Group AA Fharmacy, K 944,000 by Director Daw Aye Aye Thein of Shine Hope Co Ltd and a slide projector by ASEAN Coordinator of Women's Federation for World Peace International Mrs. Kong Yeon Hwa.

Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe expressed words of thanks.

The cash donated by the Japanese Embassy will be used in implementation of nutrition plan for under-five children being carried out by MMCWA and it will be handed over to Bahan and Hlinethaya Township MCWAs.

(5)  Myanmar delegation back from Third ASEAN Finance Ministers Meeting in Hanoi

YANGON, 22 Mar - Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein arrived back here this evening after attending the Third ASEAN Finance Ministers Meeting held in Hanoi, Vietnam from 19 to 20 March.

The delegation was welcomed back at the airport by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Ambassador of Vietnam.Mr Nguyen Pang Khoa, First Secretary of Singapore Embassy Mr William Chik, the managing directors and directors-general under the ministry.

The Third ASEAN Finance Ministers Meeting was held at Hanoi Daewoo Hotel. Present on the occasion were Finance Ministers from ASEAN nations, ASEAN Secretary General Mr Rodolfo C Severino and delegates from World Bank, International Monetary Fund and Asian Development Bank. Prime Minister of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai delivered an address.

The meeting was presided over by Finance Minister of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Sinh Hung and ASEAN Finance Ministers exchanged views on monetary and economic matters in the region and discussed promotion of cooperation in development of monetary and economic affairs.

In his discussion, Minister U Khin Maung Thein said various works on economic development are being implemented with added momentum for building of a peaceful, modern and developed nation and works to be done in cooperation with ASEAN nations are being carried out fully.

(6)  19.4 kilos of opium seized

YANGON, 22 Mar - Two men were nabbed after being discovered in possession of 11 packets of opium weighing 19.4 kilos.

Acting on information, a combined team including members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, searched the house of Paung Shin, 31, son of U Maung Aik of Takwin Village, Mohnyin Township, Kachin State, on 9 March and arrested Maung Aik, 32, son of U Maung Ni of Mingon Village, Mokaung Township, who was in the house together with the narcotic drugs hidden in white Toyota Corolla (Ah/ 6577).

Action has been taken against them.

(7)  Minister meets Director of Archon Sdn Bhd

YANGON, 22 Mar - Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's office Brig-Gen Maung Maung met Director of Archon Sdn Bhd of Malaysia Mr Jeong Sand In who called at the MIC office at 3 pm today.

Present at the call were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(8)  Plans discussed for formation of Medicine and Medical Equipment Dealers, Entrepreneurs Association

YANGON, 22 Mar - A preliminary meeting on formation of Myanmar Naing-Ngan Medicine and Medical Equipment Dealers and Entrepreneurs Association was held at the Medical Research Department today.

In his address, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein said sustained support will be provided for development of the association and spoke of the need for emergence of a reliable association.

Director-General of Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe discussed the tasks for formation of the association, and the medicine and medical equipment dealers and entrepreneurs joined in the discussions.

(9)  National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 22 Mar - National Convention Convening Commission held its meeting at the Commission Office this afternoon.

The meeting was attended by Commission Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and members.

The Secretary of the Commission reported on national convention, matters on National Convention Work Committee and Management Committee. Members of the Commission took part in the discussions.

Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin discussed the reports.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the chairman.

(10)  Fisheries Dept to grant work permits

YANGON, 22 Mar - A meeting was held this afternoon at Fisheries Department to grant work permits to entrepreneurs to conduct fishing at inns (lakes), attended by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein.

Director-General of FD U Soe Win explained granting Permits in 1999-2000.

Heads of state/division and district FD offices took part in the discussions.

The deputy minister also gave suggestions.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.

(11)  69 members resign from Ayadaw Township NLD

YANGON, 22 Mar - Sixty-nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ayadaw Township, Sagaing Division.

Sixty-nine members of Ayadaw Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ayadaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 19 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12)  34 members resign from Kyaukse Township NLD

YANGON, 22 Mar - Thirty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kyaukse Township, Mandalay Division.

Thirty-four members of Kyaukse Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyaukse Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 14 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(13)  Computer Quiz continues

YANGON, 22 Mar - The Computer Quiz in commemoration of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day continued at the booth of Twelve Objectives in Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning.

Secretary of Twelve Objectives Booth Display Work Committee Lt-Col Win Maung explained the points about quiz and Assistant Lecturer U Khin Maung Win of Applied Technology Department of Yangon Institute of Computer Science and Technology rules and regulations.

Members of Dawbon, North Okkalapa and Latha Township Union Solidarity and Development Associations participated in the quiz.
