(1)  Secretary-l inspects maintenance of Shwedagon Pagoda Htidaw

YANGON, 21 Mar - Patron of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Southern Stairway of the Pagoda at 7:15 am today.

They were welcomed by Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Chairman of Work Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and committee members, Myanmar Engineers and members of the Board of Trustees.

Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the jewellery and cash donation ceremony at the Old Museum Tazaung on the platform of the pagoda.

It was also attended by Minister Maj-Gen Kyaw Than and family, Deputy Commander Col Hsan Hsint and officials, members of the Board of Trustees, guests and well-wishers.

Well-wishers presented jewellery and cash to Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt for the Htidaw renovation of the Pagoda.

After the ceremony, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt paid homage to Hsutaungpyi Padamya Myetshin Buddha Image on upper terrace of the pagoda.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt ascended the pagoda and inspected work on maintenance of Htidaw.

Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt fixed the gold bells and gold leaves of Bodi tree donated by the public to the steel frames of the seventh tier of the Htidaw.

Next, the Secretary-1 paid obeisance to Seinphudaw and Hngetmyatnadaw and fixed the gold and jewellery to Hngetmyatnadaw.

The Secretary-1 inspected works for measuring the height of the pagoda with the use of Total Station modern equipment of Top Con Co.

(2)  Chief of Staff (Army) inspects booths at Defence Services Museum

YANGON, 21 Mar - Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected completion of preparations for the booths at Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning.

Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo arrived at the museum at 9:15 am.

Accompanied by Chairman of Management Committee for Observance of 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief of Staff (Navy) Capt Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Military Appointments-General Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Judge Advocate-General Col Thein Soe, Vice-Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, senior military officers, deputy ministers, Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected the photographs of senior military officers, members of the State Peace and Development Council and ministers headed by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe displayed at the entrance hall of the museum.

(3)  Myanma Gems Emporium gets over US $ 6m from sales

YANGON, 21 Mar - Patron of the Central Committee for Myanma Gems Emporium Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, accompanied by Chairman of the Central Committee Deputy Minister U Myint Thein, today attended the final day sales of pearl lots through competitive bidding.

A total of 35 lots of pearl were sold by tender system and fetched US $ 227,872.

So far, gems, jade and pearl lots were sold by tender system and through competitive bidding and fetched US $ 6,309,470 - US $ 4,990,510 for 285 lots of jade, US $ 930,660 for 27 lots of jewellery, US $ 227,872 for 35 lots of pearl and US $ 160,42.8 for jade figurines, gems, jade an jewellery at fixed prices the Myanma Gems Emporium.

Altogether 500 merchants - 364 merchants of 206 companies from 17 countries and 136 local merchants of 69 local companies attended the Myanma Gem Emporium.

(4)  Minister inspects construction of hospitals

YANGON, 21 Mar - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein arrived at the construction site of two-storey narcotic drug treatment unit (200-bed) of Psychiatric Hospital in Dagon Myothit (East) Township this morning.

The minister was welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Deputy Minister for Construction UE Tint Swe, directors-general of departments under the Ministry of Health, Director (Architecture) of Public Works U Win Zaw, Medical Superintendent of Psychiatric Hospital Dr Toe Aung, Dr Khin Maung Gyi in charge of narcotic drug treatment and officials.

Director (Architecture) U Win Zaw and Deputy Superintending Engineer U Kyaw Lwin reported on construction works.

The deputy minister for construction gave a supplementary report.

The minister gave instructions on completion of construction works as soon as possible, meeting the set standard and minimizing loss and wastage, and later inspected the construction site.

(5)  Minister for PBANRDA tours Pantanaw

YANGON, 21 Mar - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, accompanied by the Director-General of Department of Development Affairs, arrived in Pantanaw in Ayeyawady Division yesterday.

He inspected Pantanaw Shwemyintin rural road, 6,445 feet long and 12 feet wide, built by the Township Development Committee utilizing over K 2.4 million.

In his meeting with the staff of Pantanaw Township Development Committee, the minister said that priority must be given to both urban and rural development and that rural roads must be repaved after laying down projects.

He also urged them to double efforts for urban development.

He later fulfilled the requirements of the staff.

Afterwards, the minister inspected laying of asphalt on Bogyoke Road, 12 feet wide and 1,844 feet long, being undertaken by the Township Development Committee.

He gave instructions on completion of works as scheduled, and inspected urban development works.

(6)  Computer Quiz continues

YANGON, 21 Mar - The Computer Quiz in commemoration of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day continued at the booth of Twelve Objectives in Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning.

Secretary of Twelve Objectives Booth Display Work Committee Lt-Col Win Maung explained the points about quiz and Assistant Lecturer U Khin Maung Win of Applied Technology Department of Yangon Institute of Computer Science and Technology rules and regulations.

Members of Tamway, Bahan and Mayangon Township USDAs participated in the quiz.

The quiz will continue till 23 March.

(7)  Sixteen members resign from Nahtogyi Township NLD

YANGON, 21 Mar - Sixteen members resigned from National League for Democracy of Nahtogyi Township, Mandalay Division.

Sixteen members of Nahtogyi Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Nahtogyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 3-3-99 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(8)  Forty-one members resign from Myingyan Township NLD

YANGON, 21 Mar - Forty-one members resigned from National League for Democracy of Myingyan Township, Mandalay Division.

Forty-one members of Myingyan Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myingyan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 5-3-99 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  100 girls of Latha BEHS No 2 initiated as nuns

YANGON, 21 Mar - Altogether 100 girl students of No 2 Basic Education High School in Latha Township were initiated as nuns at Shweminwun Sasana Yeiktha in Bahan Township this morning. It was the eighth such initiation ceremony of the school.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, Headmistress Daw Khin Ohn Myint, teachers and students.

Congregation received the Eight Precepts from Presiding Sayadaw of Shweminwun Sasana Yeiktha Maha Kammahtanacariya Bhaddanta Sobhana.

Members of the Sangha recited the parittas and Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhana delivered a sermon.

The ministers and the headmistress presented offertories to the members of the Sangha and merits gained were shared.

(10)  MOC Chairman receives HK Olympic Committee Chairman

YANGON, 21 Mar - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win received Chairman of Hong Kong Olympic Committee Mr Temothya Fok in the Jade Hall of the National Indoor Stadium-1 today.

They discussed matters relating to the sports sector in the two countries.

Also present were officials of the Ministry of Sports and the Sports and Physical Education Department.
