(1)  Secretary-1 inspects carving of jade Buddha image, Seinphudaw and Hngetmyatnadaw of Shwebontha Muni Pagoda

YANGON, 20 Mar - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Myanma Gems Enterprise of Ministry of Mines on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

They were welcomed by Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo and officials.

First, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected carving of jade Buddha image which is 30 inches high in Bumiphathamudra to be kept at Shwedagon Pagoda.

Officials reported on the work.

The Secretary-1 and party then paid reverence to jade Buddha image.

Afterwards, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party also inspected progress on creation of Seinphudaw and Hngetmyatnadaw to be placed atop Shwebontha Muni Pagoda in Padaung Township at the reception hall of MGE.

The Secretary-1 then left there in the afternoon.

(2)  Work at International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University coordinated

YANGON, 20 Mar - A coordination meeting on the work at the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University was held at the lecture hall of ITBMU in Mayangon Township this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The meeting was also attended by Rector of ITBMU Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Dhaja Bhaddanta Sila Nandabhivamsa, Pro-rector Sayadaw (Academic) Agga Maha Gandhavacaka Pandita Dr Bhaddanla Neminda, Head of Faculty of Pariyatti Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kumarabhiyamsa, Head of Faculty of Paripatti Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Dhaja Bhaddanta Pannadipa, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments and officials of ITBMU.

(3)  Secretary-2 inspects Hline River (Myochaung) Bridge Project, agricultural work in Hmawby, Taikkyi

YANGON, 20 Mar - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo today inspected Hline River Bridge (Myochaung) Project in Hmawby Township, construction of Yaydwingon-Myochaung Road and taming of vacant and fallow lands for agricultural purposes in Taikkyi Township.

On the inspection tour, he was accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Brig-Gen Than Turn Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Col Saw Hla Min of Phugyi Station, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and officials.

(4)  Minister inspects facilities of Waterway Department, Myanma Five Star Line

YANGON, 20 Mar - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by the deputy ministers, arrived at Waterway Department yesterday.

The minister heard reports on the brief history and set-up of the department and situation of Pakokku-Myingyan-Myitkyina waterway by Director-General (Attach) U Aye Min. Deputy Minister U Pe Than and Deputy Director U Aung Yi. The minister and party inspected staff offices, Shipping Development and Research Branch Office, Container Division, Insurance Branch, Administration and Library Division, Dispensary, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) of Myanma Five Star Line.

(5)  0.024 kilo of heroin seized in Muse

YANGON, 20 Mar - Tatmadawmen of local battalion, while discharging security duties on 27 February at Hemoelon Village in Muse Township, Northern Shan State, on suspicion, searched U Ton Yin Sein, 63, son of U Ton San Tan and Daw Ma Shan, 45, daughter of U Law Ta of the village and apprehended the two together with 0.024 kilo of heroin, K 19,000 and 1,368 yuan realized in drug trafficking.

Action is being taken against the two according to law.

YANGON, 20 Mar - ASEAN finance ministers and central banks have agreed to work on a new surveillance mechanism to monitor economic performance and check instability of Asian markets early on at the two-day meeting of the ASEAN finance ministers held in Hanoi CNN reported.

(7)  Story to be broadcast in English in honour of Armed Forces Day

YANGON, 20 Mar - A story titled "Chit Thaw Chit Thu Mya" in honour of the 54th Anniversary of the Armed Forces Day, written by Hninzi Wai of Myanmar Radio, translated into "Loving Lovers" by Ling Maung Pan, will be broadcast in English at 9 pm on 27 March.

The cast includes N D Hwan, Thet Thet Aung and Mi Mi Kyaw of Talents & Model Agency by Tin Moe Lwin and Myanmar Radio of English programme staff.

(8)  Ambassador U Soe Win presents credentials to President of Pakistan

YANGON, 21 Mar - U Soe Win, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, presented his credentials to His Excellency Mr Muhammad Rafiq Tarar, President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on 18 March 1999, in Islamabad.

(9)  Minister for Energy inspects Htantabin oil and natural gas field

YANGON, 20 Mar - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, accompanied by officials, arrived in Htantabin oil and natural gas field in Kyangin Township on 19 March.

The minister was welcomed by officials.

Chief Mining Engineer U Ye Khaung reported on drilling of test well 34 in Htantabin and test operation at the briefing hall, Assistant Executive officer on Geology U Soe Thein on finding of geographical position on deposit of oil and natural gas south of Htantabin oil-field, oil and natural gas in lime layer and fossils. The minister gave instructions on drilling to 7,000 feet deep, test operation in April and preparations for production before monsoon.

This morning, the minister went to No-3 Fertilizer Plant (Kyawswa) and discussed production of fertilizer, packaging, storage and distribution.

The minister proceeded to Pyitaungdan oil-field and inspected construction of the natural gas pressure booster.

The minister gave instructions on completion of the factory in time.

(10)  Development of Taninthayi Division coordinated

YANGON, 20 Mar - A coordination meeting on development of Taninthayi Division was held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation this afternoon.

It was attended by Chairman of Taninthayi Division Development Work Committee Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and ministers, deputy ministers, departmental heads, organizations of entrepreneurs and guests.

(11)  K 23m worth Maubin BEHS-1 centennial building handed over to Ministry of Education

YANGON, 20 Mar - A ceremony to open a new two-storey building to mark the centenary of Maubin Basic Education High School-1 was held in Maubin in conjunction with the ceremony to hand over the new building to the Ministry of Education today.

The 24-room new building is 216 feet long, 102 feet wide and 29 feet high. It was built at a cost of K 23.3 million within five months.

Present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Education U Than Aung, directors-general, directors, Chairman of Maubin District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col J Han Shein, departmental officials, teachers, old students of the s members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and students.

(12)  Sixty members resign from Pale Township NLD

YANGON, 20 Mar - Sixty members resigned from National League for Democracy of Pale Township, Sagaing Division.

Sixty members of Pale Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pale Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 13-1-99 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(13)  145 members resign from Pyapon Township NLD

YANGON, 20 Mar - One hundred and forty-five members resigned from National League for Democracy of Pyapon Township, Ayeyawady Division.

A total of 145 members of Pyapon Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyapon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 16-12-98 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
