YANGON, 19 Mar - The Sixth National Conference of Myanmar Red Cross Society was held in the assembly hall of the Institute of Nursing (Yangon) today, with an address by Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Also present on the occasion were Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister at the Prime Minister' s Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, Resident Representative of the Federation of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Associations Mr Floyd Barnaby, President of MRCS Dr Hla Bu, EC members, members of the MRCS Central Council, chairmen of State/ Division Red Cross Supervisory Committees, commanders of State/Division Red Cross brigades, representatives of social organizations, delegates and specially invited guests.
In his address, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said that holding of the Sixth National Conference of MRCS was an encouraging accomplishment for the future of the nation and that the government is today striving for modernization of the nation relying on the national forces born of the people.

(2) Ngamoeyeik Bridge commissioned into service
YANGON, 19 Mar - Ngamoeyeik Creek Bridge was commissioned into service this morning in dedication to 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, with an address by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
The six-lane bridge linking Thingangyun and Dagon Myothit townships was built by Public Works of the Ministry of Construction.
The Secretary-1 said Myanmar had not been able to give much priority to developing the social facilities such as education, health and transport sectors as it was solving insurgency and security problems which were the results of the evil legacy of the colonial era.
The Tatmadaw after saving the nation in time from anarchic conditions of 1988 disturbances, gave priority to national consolidation and regional peace and ensuring smooth and secure transport and national development.
The Tatmadaw has built roads and bridges in ensuring smooth and secure transport in the entire nation, leading towards consolidating national unity and improving regional progress and socioeconomic life of the regional people.

(3) Secretary-1 inspects Htidaw's durability at Shwedagon Pagoda
YANGON, 19 Mar - Patron the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Southern Stairway of the Pagoda at 3 pm today.
They were welcomed by Chairman of Leading Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Chairman of Work Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and committee members, Myanmar Engineers and members of the Board of trustees.
First, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected renovation of U Maung Gyi Tazaung on the pagoda platform.
At the Old Museum Tazaung, Chairman of Work Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and Myanmar architects reported to the Secretary-1 on Htidaw durability work, offering of gold plates and gold foils and arrangements for Htidaw offering ceremony.
Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt fulfilled the requirements.
Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. and party paid homage to Padamya Myetshin Buddha Image on the upper terrace and inspected Htidaw durability work.
Later, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt fixed gold bells and gold leaves of Bodhi tree donated by the public to the steel frames of the seventh tier of the Htidaw.

YANGON, 19 Mar - Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of the Bureau of Special Operation and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected hostels and messing halls of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command and No 1 Transit Centre for Armed Forces Day parade columns this afternoon.
Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo was accompanied by Chairman of Management Committee for Observance of 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Secretary of Parade Committee Brig-Gen Aung Kyi, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung pa and officials.
At the Commander's Office of Nawaday Column, Commander of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Commodore Khin Aung reported to Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party on accommodation of companies in Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters and Commander of Nawaday Column- Col San Win on the formation, strength, accommodation and welfare of Nawaday Column.

(5) Pyithu Hluttaw representative-elect of Lewe Township Constituency-2 of township NLD and members resign
YANGON, 19 Mar - A ceremony to present letters of resignation of members of Lewe Township National League for Democracy including Township NLD Chairman U Nyi Nyi Tun who was also Pyithu Hluttaw representative elected in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Lewe Township Constituency-2 in Yamethin District, Mandalay Division, and to explain the reason of resignation to the people was held at Thayagon Village, Lewe Township, on 12 March morning.
Present on the occasion were over 12,000 eligible voters of three wards and 36 village-tracts of Lewe Township Constituency-2.
The meeting was chaired by retired Township Education Officer U Myint Lwin, merchant U Hla Myint and farmer U Aung Thein Tin. Daw Htar Htar Oo acted as master of ceremonies.

YANGON, 19 Mar - Eight members including Vice-Chairman U San Thein resigned from the National League for Democracy of Hlinethaya Township, Yangon Division, on 18 March 1999.
Eight members including Vice-Chairman of Hlinethaya Township NLD, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Hlinethaya Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 18 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
They were Vice-Chairman of Hlinethaya Township NLD U San Thein, EC member Daw Myint Kyi, organizers U Myat Kyaw, U Nyein Aye, U Chit Swe and Daw Khin Yi and members U Hla Shwe and Daw Hta Lain.

YANGON, 19 Mar - Seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of South Okkalapa Township, Yangon Division.
Seven members of South Okkalapa Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to South Okkalapa Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 23 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

YANGON, 19 Mar - The 36th Myanmar Gems Emporium continued the sales of jade lots through competitive bidding system today.
A total of 24 lots of jade were sold by tender system and fetched US $ 1,160,684. Sales of jade figurines, gems, jade and gems ornaments at fixed prices fetched US $ 6,483.
So far, 358 merchants from 15 countries and 132 local merchants are attending the 36th Myanmar Gems Emporium.
The sales of jewellery lots through competitive bidding will continue tomorrow.

(10) MNWCWA donates medicines to Health Department
YANGON, 19 Mar - Hailing the International Day for TB Eradication which falls on 24 March, a ceremony to donate medicines to Ministry of Health by Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs was held at Health Department Office this morning.
Vice-Chairman of MNWCWA Professor Daw May May Yi explained the purpose of the donations. Head of Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented medicines to Director-General Dr Wan Maung of Health Department.
The director-general presented a certificate of honour to MNWCWA.
Present on the occasion were members of MNWCWA, directors and deputy directors of the Health Department and officials.

(11) Deputy Prime Ministers inspect 36th Myanma Gems Emporium
YANGON, 19 Mar - Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun arrived at the 36th Myanma Gems Emporium at Myanma Gems Hall on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.
The deputy Prime Ministers were welcomed by Patron of Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Chairman of the Central Committee Deputy Minister far Mines U Myint Thein, Secretary Managing Director U Khin Oo of Myanma Gems Enterprise and EC members.
Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun inspected jewellery produced by Myanmar VES Joint Venture Company Ltd. jade figurines, gems, jade and gems ornaments to be sold at fixed price, private jewellery shops, shops which Sells paintings decorated with gems, and pearl lots.
They also inspected second day of sales of jade lots through competitive
bidding.
