(1)  Secretary-1 to pay goodwill visit to LPDR

YANGON, 19 Mar - At the invitation of His Excellency Mr Boungnang Volachith, Vice-Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, will pay a goodwill visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic in the near future.

(2)  Two repaved streets opened in Kengtung

YANGON, 18 Mar - Two streets paved on self-reliances basis were opened in Kengtung Township, Shan State (East), on 11 March, attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein.

The commander formally opened the two streets - the 12-foot wide Nongkyauk and l6-foot wide Nongkhaik streets.

Township Development Committee provided K 1,298,330, Town Development Trust Fund K 500,000 and the public K 1,107,300 in rebuilding the Nongkyauk Street which is 1993 feet long.

The TDC contributed K 1,499,000 and the public K 2,106,920 in rebuilding the 1,583-foot long Nongkhaik Street.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Commander of Triangle Region Command Col Myint Swe, members of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council, division level officials, departmental personnel of Kengtung District and Township, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, members of traditional cultural troupes and local people.

(3)  11th Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Physicians Conference begins

YANGON, 18 Mar - A ceremony to open the 11th Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Physicians Conference was held at the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital on Natmauk Street in Bahan Township this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, departmental officials, eye, ear, nose and throat specialists from states and divisions, medical superintendents, physicians and guests.

Chairman of Myanmar Medical Association Rector Dr Myo Myint and Chairman of the eye, ear, nose and throat physicians association Professor Dr Than Aung made opening speeches.

Then, a ceremony to open a conference commemorative exhibition was held.

Maj-Gen Ket Sein formally opened the exhibition and view it.

The first day programme of the conference began at 10 am.

A total of 30 papers including 13 papers on eye treatment and 17 on ear, nose and throat treatment were submitted.

The conference will continue till 20 March.

Altogether 22 medical companies opened 16 booths at the exhibition.

(4)  18 members resign from Pabedan Township NLD

YANGON, 18 Mar - Eighteen members including in-charge of public relations U Htay Lwin resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pabedan Township, Yangon Division.

Eighteen members of Pabedan Township NLD, Yangon Division, on their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 16 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(5)  110 members resign from Lanmadaw Township NLD

YANGON, 18 Mar - One-hundred-ten members collectively resigned from the National League for Democracy of Lanmadaw Township, Yangon Division, at Township Basic Education Middle School No-1 today.

One-hundred-ten members of Lanmadaw Township NLD, Yangon Division, on their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(6)  Commander inspects road projects

YANGON, 18 Mar - Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint inspected Mandalay-PyinOoLwin Road Extension Project and Mandalay City Belt Road Project on 16 March.

Accompanied by Chairman of Mandalay City Development Committee Mayor of Mandalay Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Col Soe Thein of PyinOoLwin Station and officials, the commander inspected paving, ground preparation works, tarring at the three sections of Mandalay-Pyin-OoLwin Road Extension Project.

At Chaukhtutgwayh, he inspected building of a by-pass road.

The commander and party then inspected building of Mandalay City Belt Road at Htonbo and Aungpinle villages and Theikpan junction.

He observed building of by-pass roads, tarring and paving and building of dikes.

(7)  Minister inspects No-2 Automobile Industry (Htonbo)

YANGON, 18 Mar - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin arrived at No-2 Automobile Industry (Htonbo) of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries at Kwinhla Station, Padaung Township, Bago Division, on 14 March.

General Manager U Kyaw Myo Win reported to the minister on production services.

He later inspected manufacturing of crankshafts and Mazda Jeep automobiles.

On 15 March, he inspected the disc wheels used with tractors and power-tillers, radiators for automobiles, hyote metal bearing, and petrol and diesel-engine inlet valves and exhaust valves displayed at No-2 Automobile Industry (Htonbo).

The implements and automobile parts are to be manufactured locally.

Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin later inspected manufacturing of frames for Mazda Jeep automobiles, and DS-70 diesel engines for TE-21 trucks.

He left instructions on proper and effective use of the machines, round-the-clock operation, and effective supervision of works.

(8)  Minister inspects booth

YANGON, 18 Mar - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint inspected the displays at ministry's exhibition and at the ministry's booth at the exhibition on nation building endeavours at the Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road yesterday evening.

He met officials and gave instructions.

(9)  Deputy Minister inspects booth of Electric Power Ministry

YANGON, 18 Mar - Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, accompanied by departmental officials, arrived at the Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning.

The Minister inspected displays of the twelve objectives, nation-building endeavours and Ministry of Electric Power to mark the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day and gave necessary instructions.

(10)  MNWCWF explains functions in Sittway Rakhine State

YANGON, 18 Mar - Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Professor Daw May May Yi, Leader of Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and work committee members explained the functions of MNWCWF in Sittway Township, Rakhine State, today.

On arrival at Sittway Airport in the morning, they were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and wife, members of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council, members of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council, members of Rakhine State Working Committee for Women's Affairs, members of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and officials.

(11)  Jade lots sold through competitive bidding

YANGON, 18 Mar - The 36th Myanma Gems Emporium took place with the sale of gems and jade at Myanmar Gems Emporium Hall on Kaba-Aye Pagoda Road from 9 am to 5 pm today.

A total of 181 lots of jade were sold by tender system and fetched US $ 705,621.

Sales of jade figurines, gems, jade and gems ornaments at fixed prices fetched US $ 16,549.

The sales of jade lots through competitive bidding will continue tomorrow.
