(1)  Secretary-1 inspects Mandalay-Katha-Bahmo Highway Project east of Ayeyawady River

YANGON, 17 Mar - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party, accompanied by Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win, left Monywa for Thabeikkyin-Tagaung Road Project, which is a section of Mandalay-Katha-Bahmo Highway Project, at the 7th Mile Camp in Thabeikkyin Township, morning.

At 8.30 am, they arrived at the office of the project where they were welcomed by Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, members of District and Township Peace and Development Council departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, members of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and officials.

Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint reported to the Secretary-l on location of Thabeikkyin Township and cultivated areas and kinds of crop, reclamation of vacant and virgin lands, weather, education and health care services, communications, transport, availability of power, gold production and timber extraction of the township.

Afterwards, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint reported on completion of the axis of Thabeikkyin 7th Mile-Tagaung Road, which is 48 miles and four furlongs long and one of the sections of Mandalay-Katha-Bahmo Highway on the eastern bank of Ayeyawady River, finishing of the 34-foot-wide earth road and building of bridges.

The Secretary arrangements to fulfil requirements for development of the region.

In giving instructions to officials, he said Mandalay Katha-Bahmo Highway is being built on the eastern sector of Ayeyawady River for development of the region along the course of the river between Mandalay and Bahmo.

Tasks are being implemented with the aims of achieving more development in the regions on both banks of the river which is the life blood of the country, enhancing advancement of agricultural production work and ensuring smooth and secure transport for the people, he said.

YANGON, 17 Mar - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board U Maung Maung Gyi, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department and officials, left here Tatmadaw aircraft yesterday morning and arrived at Mandalay at 9.20 am yesterday.

They were welcomed at Mandalay Airport by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, military and civilian officers, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and families.

(3)  Myanmar delegation arrives back from Thailand

YANGON, 17 Mar - A 30-member Myanmar delegation led by Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, comprising Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Myint Aung and Commander of Taninthayi Naval Region Command Commodore Soe Myint arrived back here by special Tatmadaw aircraft this evening after attending the 17th Meeting of the Myanmar-Thailand Regional Border Committee held in Phuket, Thailand.

The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Military Appointments-General Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, senior military officers, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and families.

(4)  MD of China Construction International Corp calls on Deputy Prime Minister

YANGON, 17 Mar - Managing Director Mr Zhang Qihao of China Construction International Corporation of the People' s Republic of China and party paid a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin at his office this morning.

They discussed investment of China Construction International Corporation in Myanmar.

Present at the call were officials of Government Office and MIC office.

(5)  Computer Quiz continues

YANGON, 17 Mar - The Computer Quiz in commemoration of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day continued at the Defence Services Museum this morning.

Members of Union Solidarity and Development Associations of Lanmadaw, Shwepyitha and Kyauktada townships took part in the quiz.

(6)  Myanmar to host World Body-building Championships in 2001

YANGON, 17 Mar - A Press conference on holding of the World Bodybuilding Championships to be held in Myanmar in 2001 took place at the City Hall this afternoon.

President of Myanmar Body-building and Physical Culture Federation Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee Col Myint Aung made a speech.

Next, Vice-President of International Federation of Body-builders and Secretary-General of the Asian Bodybuilding Federation Mr Paul Chua said peace and tranquillity restored in Myanmar and it was chosen to host the World Body-building Championships for its better conditions.

He also spoke on preparations for the championship to be held in November 2001.

Mr Chua replied to the queries raised by local and foreign journalists and writers from journals and magazines.

International Federation of Body-builders will invite 176 nations to participate.

(7)  Executive Vice-President of EIBC calls on Minister for Electric Power

YANGON, 17 Mar - A delegation led by Executive Vice-President Mr Gu Mingchao of the Export Import Bank of China (EIBC) of the People's Republic of China, accompanied by officials of PRC embassy and YMEC, called on Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut at his office this morning.

Present at the call were Director-General of Electric Power Department U Zaw Win, Managing Director of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise U Yan Naing and officials.

(8)  More people join USDA

YANGON, 17 Mar - A total of 3,144 persons of three village-tracts in Mezaligon region in Ingapu Township, Ayeyawady Division, have become members of Union Solidarity and Development Association on 4 March.

USDA Central Executive Committee member Deputy Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Thein Aung accepted the applications in Mezaligon village.

The deputy minister also accepted 1,890 USDA applications from villagers of five villages in Myanaung Township, Ayeyawady Division, on 5 March.

(9)  Myanmar Embassy opened in Phnom Penh Cambodia to open embassy in Yangon

YANGON, 17 Mar - The Union of Myanmar maintains friendly relations with all the countries in Southeast Asia and in conformity with this fine tradition, Myanmar has established Diplomatic Missions in all ASEAN countries with a view to enhancing relations bilaterally and in the ASEAN context.

As Cambodia will soon become a member of ASEAN and in view of the friendly relations that Myanmar traditionally enjoys with Cambodia, the Myanmar Embassy has been opened in Phnom Penh with effect from 16 March 1999. The establishment of the Myanmar Embassy will further strengthen the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.

It has been learnt that Cambodia will also open its Embassy in Yangon in the near future.

(10)  40 members resign from Mawlamyine Township NLD

YANGON, 17 Mar - Forty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mawlamyine Township, Mon State.

Forty members of Mawlamyine Township NLD, Mon State, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation, documents, signboard, flag and membership cards of the party to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 15 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11)  23 members resign from Thanlyin Township NLD

YANGON, 17 Mar - Twenty-three members including Secretary U Myint Swe resigned from the National League for Democracy of Thanlyin Township, Yangon Division .

Twenty-three members including Secretary U Myint Swe of Thanlyin Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Thanlyin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 15 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
