(1)  General Maung Aye inspects construction projects in Magway, Bago Divisions

YANGON, 16 Mar - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and members, ministers and officials, left Bagan-NyaungU by helicopter yesterday for Magway Township, where Taungdwingyi Magway Railroad is being built.

The General and party were welcomed there by Commander of No 88 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Aye Kyway, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin and officials.

In the briefing hall near Yin Creek Bridge Project, Thura U Thaung Lwin and Commander Brig-Gen Aye Kyway reported to the General on progress in construction of the railroad and building of bridges.

The General instructed officials to systematically keep records on the project and provide supervision so as to minimize loss and wastage and then presented gifts to them.

Afterwards, the General and party cordially met Tatmadaw members building the railroad section.

Rail tracks have been laid for 50 miles and seven furlongs out of the 52.1-mile railroad section being built by Tatmadaw members of units and battalions under No 88 LID.

There will be three over 100-foot-long bridges across Zi Creek, Yanpe Creek and Yin Creek on the railroad section. Zi Creek Bridge has been completed cent-per-cent, Yanpe Creek Bridge and Yin Creek Bridge 95 percent. One hundred and sixty-nine small bridges on the railroad section have been completed and will be ready to be opened soon.

The General and party then left for Paunglaung Multi-purpose Dam Project by helicopter at 11.10 am.

They were welcomed there by Col Thein Swe of Pyinmana Station and officials.

In the briefing hall, Deputy Chief Engineer (Hydel Power) U Win Kyaw reported to the General on the hydel power project, followed by a supplementary report by Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut.

On completion of Paunglaung Multi-purpose Dam, four generators will be installed to produce 70 mega watts of power and to irrigate 50,000 acres of paddy fields.

The General and party then proceeded to Toungoo where they were welcomed by Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Thura Maung Ni, Toungoo Air Base Commander Brig-Gen Thura Myint Thein, Brig-Gen Aung Win of Ottwin Station and military and civilian officials, national entrepreneurs and families.

(2)  Workshop on ASEAN Industrial Cooperation Scheme (AICO)

YANGON, 16 Mar - Workshop on ASEAN Industrial Cooperation Scheme (AICO) co-sponsored by Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Singapore-based German company Hanns Seidel Foundation was held at Hotel Equatorial this morning.

It was attended by Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman' s Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 U Thein Tun, ambassadors of ASEAN member countries, Executive Director Mr Noordin Azhari of ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia, Director of Ministry of Industry of Thailand Mr Dhawatchai Tangsanga, Director Mr Gunter Renner of Hanns Seidel Foundation, UMCCI Chairman U Khin Maung Yi and executives and guests. U Khin Maung Yi extended greetings, and Maj-Gen Kyaw Than made a speech on the occasion.

It was followed by the address given by Minister Brig-Gen Abel.

Mr Gunter Renner thanked UMCCI for its help in jointly organizing the workshop.

AICO programme is to improve industries in ASEAN region through cooperation of companies based in member countries of ASEAN.

At the workshop, Mr Noordin Azhari presented the paper on Introduction to the AICO, Mr Dhawatchai Tangsanga on Thailand's experience in implementation of AICO Scheme and UMCCI Vice-Chairman U Tun Aye on AICO Scheme in Myanmar.

(3)  Medicine for MMCWA

YANGON, 16 Mar - Ranbaxy Laboratory Ltd donated medicine worth K 302,025 to Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the multi-purpose building of MMCWA at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkalapa Township this morning.

Present on the occasion were Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and executive committee members, country manager of Ranbaxy Laboratory Ltd Mr Viren Popli and party.

Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe accepted the medicine and presented a certificate of honour.

Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe spoke words of thanks.

(4)  47,542 stimulant tablets seized

YANGON, 16 Mar - A combined group comprising Tatmadawmen of local battalion, members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, waited at slope of the hill in Loi Hsaung Htauk region 2, Mongshu Gems Land, Mongshu Township, Shan State (South), on 4 March and searched Lauk Shone, 25, son of U Phu Hong Shee of Chanreeshan Village, Kunlong Township and Kein Shin, 27, son of U Shauk Lauk of Thoakshwe Village, Kunlong Township.

The authorities seized A/99 brand 47.542 stimulant tablets together with them.

Myanmar Police Force in Loi Hsaung Htauk is taking action against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(5)  Computer Quiz continues

YANGON, 16 Mar - The Computer Quiz in commemoration of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day continued at the Defence Services Museum here this morning.

Member of Central Executive Committee of Union Solidarity and Development Association Col Thaik Tun and Secretary of Twelve Objectives Booth Display Work Committee Lt-Col Win Maung explained points, about the quiz.

Members of Dagon, Dalla and Pazundaung Township USDAs participated in the quiz.

(6)  Gem merchants inspect jade and gems

YANGON, 16 Mar - A total of 223 gems merchants of 121 companies from nine countries and 78 local gems merchants of 39 local private companies, totaling 301, had arrived here to attend the 36th Myanma Gems Emporium.

The gems merchants inspected jade and gems displayed at the 36th Myanma Gems Emporium from 9 am to 5 pm today. Secretary of Central Organizing Committee Managing Director U Khin Oo of Myanma Gems Enterprise and secretaries of the sub-committees conducted them round there.

The merchants will continue to inspect jade and gems tomorrow.

(7)  Full bench of Supreme Court hears cases

YANGON, 16 Mar - The Full Bench comprising Chief Justice U Aung Toe and all Supreme Court Justices, sitting at Court Room No-1 this morning, passed judgement on two special criminal appeal cases and four civil special appeal cases which were heard under Section 6 of the Judiciary Law. The Full Bench also heard two special criminal appeal cases and five civil special appeal cases sub-Committed under Section 6 of the Judiciary Law.

(8)  Commander inspects columns' parade drills

YANGON, 16 Mar - The Parade columns which will participate in the 54 Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade, led by Reserve Parade Commander Col Than Win and Reserve Parade Adjutant Lt-Col Kyaw Soe, practised marching from Myoma sports ground to Resistance Park from 6 am to 9.40 am today.

Chairman of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Observance Management Committee Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chairman of Parade Work Committee Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Secretary Brig-Gen Aung Kyi, Chairman of Company Selection and Prize Presentation Committee Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Chairman of Security Work Committee Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and senior military officers inspected the marching of the columns.

Anawrahta, Kyansittha, Bayintnaung, Nawaday, Aungzeya, Hsinbyushin, Bandoola, Myawady and Aung San columns marching accompanied by Bagpipe troupes led by Corporal Kyaw Naing Oo.

(9)  45 members resign from Kyaukse Township NLD

YANGON, 16 Mar - Forty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kyaukse Township, Mandalay Division.

Forty-five members of Kyaukse Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyaukse Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 10 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party Politics of NLD.

(10)  63 members resign from Tatkon Township NLD

YANGON, 16 Mar - Sixty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Tatkon Township, Mandalay Division.

Sixty-three members of Tatkon Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Tatkon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 30 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11)  Lower Myanmar Bank Managers hold coord meeting

YANGON, 15 Mar - A coordination meeting of Lower Myanmar Bank Managers of Myanma Economic Bank for 1998-99 was opened at the Bank branch 1 on Pansodan Street this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun, Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, Managing Director of MEB Thura U Myint Shwe and officials.

The Minister spoke on important role of banks and making efforts for speedy banking serve ice and winning public confidence.
