(1)  Secretary-1 attends 10th anniversary of peace in Shan State (North) Special Region 1 (Kokang)

YANGON, 12 March - Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address at the ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of peace in Shan State (North) Special Region I (Kokang) yesterday.

Accompanied by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, departmental heads, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar Mr Kazuo Asakai, Director-General of Japan Liberal Democratic Party Mr Iwakura Tomomitsu, agriculture and irrigation experts from Japan, correspondents of Reuters news agency, and officials, the Secretary-l left Yangon for Lashio by Tatmadaw aircraft yesterday morning.

On arrival at Lashio Airport, the Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, military and civilian officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, family members and local people.

Accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, the Secretary-l and party proceeded to Laukkai in Laukkai District, Kokang Region, by helicopter.

They were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Brig-Gen Than Tun, Commander of No 101 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Aung Thein Lin, the organizer of Laukkai District and members of the management committee, departmental personnel, USDA members, Kokang national race leader U Phon Kya Shin and other leaders  and local people.

(2) Secretary-1 receives Ambassador of LPDR

YANGON, 12 March - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Ambassador of Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

Present together with the Secretary-1 were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(3)  Myanmar, Macau sign air services agreement

YANGON, 12 March - The Union of Myanmar and Macau signed an air services agreement at Karaweik Palace this morning.

Present on the occasion were Ministers at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel and Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, directors-general, managing directors and principals of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Attorney-General's Office and the Ministry of Transport, Governor of Macau General Vasco Rocha Vieira and delegation members.

First, Director-General of the Department of Civil Aviation U Win Maung and the Governor of Macau General Vasco Rocha Vieira made the speeches on the occasion.

Then, Director-General U Win Maung of Department of Civil Aviation and Governor of Macau General Vasco Rocha Vieira signed the bilateral air services agreement.

Under the agreement the respective airlines will fly three flights a week to Yangon and Macao.

(4)  Deputy Minister meets Vice-Mayor of Bangkok City

YANGON 12 March - Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung met Vice-Mayor of Bangkok City Mr Yandhet Thong Sima and party who called at the Ministry of Home Affairs at 2 pm today.

Present at the call were Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Deputy Director-General U Maung Win of General Administration Department and Head of Office U Yan Myo Aung Thein.

(5)  Shan State (North) People's Hospital gets Surgical Ward in Lashio

YANGON, 12 March - The inauguration ceremony of Surgical Ward of Shan State (North) People's Hospital (Lashio) was held at the hospital at 8 am today, at. tended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, ministers, deputy ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of department, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar Mr Kazuo Asakai, Director General of Japan Liberal Democratic Party Mr Iwakura Tomomitsu, agricultural and irrigation experts from Japan, members of the Shan State, District and Township Peace and Development. Councils, officials of Health Department and Public Works, departmental officials, delegates of Non-governmental Organizations, Head of Shan State Health Department, Medical Superintendent of Shan State People's Hospital Dr Than Zaw and specialists, doctors, nurses and local residents.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein formally opened the Surgical Ward.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt pressed the button to unveil the signboard and stone plaque of the Surgical Ward.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected the ward.

The two-storey reinforced concrete Surgical Ward is 182 feet long and 50 feet wide.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-l and party went to Thathana Beikmandawgyi (Lashio) where they inspected preparations to offer Thinkyittaw, Maggaitaw. Salwetaw, Nabantaw, Nakintaw and Bayettaw to Maha Myatmuni Buddha Image (Lashio).

Then, the Secretary-l and party also inspected the construction of Maha Myatmuni Gandhakudi Kyaungdawgyi.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party arrived back here this morning.

(6)  54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day parade columns continue practice drill

YANGON, 12 March - Parade columns which would participate in 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade, led by Commander of Parade columns Col Aung Min, practised marching from Myoma Sports Ground to Resistance Park from 6 am to 9.30 am today.

Members of the Leading Committee Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Vice Adjutant General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Secretary of Parade Work Committee Brig-Gen Aung Kyi, Senior Tatmadaw officers (Army, Navy, Air) inspected the marching of Anawrahta, Kyansittha, Bayintnaung, Nawaday, Aungzeya, Hsinphyushin, Bandoola, Myawady and Aung San Parade Columns.

They fulfilled the requirements.

(7)  Chairperson of MMCWA and members visit 3D The Imax Digital Theatre

YANGON, 12 March - At the invitation of Dopyitha Enterprises Limited, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal add Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, members of Central Executive Committee, patrons of Work Supervision Committee, teachers and 40 students of Children's Allround Development Centre visited 3D The Imax Digital Theatre opened by Dopyitha Enterprises Ltd in Yangon Zoological Gardens at 8 am today.

Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and members enjoyed programmes of Underwater World and the Universe.

Also present on the occasion were wives of Foreign Military Attaches and families.

(8)  135 members resign from Pyapon Township NLD

YANGON, 12 March - One hundred and thirty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyapon Township, Ayeyawady Division.

One hundred and thirty-five members of Pyapon Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyapon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 16 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  58 members resign from Taze Township NLD

YANGON, 12 March - Fifty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Taze Township, Sagaing Division.

Fifty-eight members of Taze Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Taze Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 13 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  Minister inspects booth of Ministry of Commerce at Defence Services Museum

YANGON, 12 March - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, accompanied by Deputy Minister Col Kyaw Hsan and officials, inspected the display of booth of the Ministry of Commerce at Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning.

Officials reported on export of beans and pulses and maize, tasks of border trade, scale models of modern 100 ton rice mills, modern 250-ton rice mills and bran oil mills, international commercial relations, documentary photos, books and photos on guidance given by the Head of State.

Minister Maj-Gen Kyaw Than gave necessary instructions to the officials.

(11)  Invitational Body Building and Physical Culture Competitions on 19, 21 March

YANGON, 12 March - The Invitational Body Building and Physical Culture Competitions sponsored by Yangon Division Body Building and Physical Culture Sub-committee will be held at Theingyi Market on 19 and 21 March.

There are four classes in body building competition - 5' 2" class, 5' 4" class, 5' 6" class and above-5' 6" class and two classes in physical culture competition-below 5' 3" junior division and above-5' 3" senior division.

Those who won first, second and third prizes in senior divisions of the previous competitions sponsored by Body Building and Physical Culture Federation, Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Competitions, Miss Myanmar (Junior Division) and Inter-State/Division cannot take part in the competitions to be sponsored by Tet Kham Entertainment City which will present prizes and rewards to the winners.

Medical checks, classification of divisions and physical fitness tests will be carried out for candidates of physical culture competitions at 10 am on 19 March. Those wishing to take part in the competitions to get registered with U Kyaw Sein Than, Joint-Secretary, grand stand of Aung San Stadium, not later than 4 pm on 18 March.

(12)  Korean Buddhist delegation pays homage to Chairman of SSMNC

YANGON, 12 March - Ven Mok Tak and the head of department of Rannin Buddhism College and party of the Republic of Korea paid homage to Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Ratha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita and member Sayadaws at the hall of Thiriminanl Kahe Aye Hill this morning and donated medicines and offertories to the Sayadaws.

The Sayadaws recited metta sutta.

Present on the occasion were heads of Religious Affairs Department and Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana and officials.
