(1)  Senior General Than Shwe takes part in State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Trophy Golf Tournament on final day

YANGON, 7 Mar - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe took part in 1998 State Peace and Development Council Chairman' s Trophy Golf Tournament on the final day at Yemon Island Golf Club in Yemon Tatmyo, Hlegu Township, Yangon Division, this morning.

Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Senior General Than Shwe arrived at Yemon Island Golf Club at 6.40 am today.

The Senior General and party were welcomed by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye, Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Ministers, ministers, deputy ministers, departmental officials and golfers of various ministries.

Then, Senior General Than Shwe took part in the golf tournament.

(2)  Secretary-1 presents prizes to winners in Golf Tournament for State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Trophy

YANGON, 7 Mar - The State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Trophy Golf Tournament continued for the second and final day at Yemon Island Golf Club in Yemon Tatmyo, Hlegu Township, today.

Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye took pan in the tournament together with Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint and members.

The prize presentation ceremony was held in the hall of the golf club at 6.30 pm.

Present on the occasion were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development  Council General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Lt-Gen Tin Tun and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers, the Auditor-General, deputy ministers, officials of departments and golfers of various ministries.

(3)  Secretary-1 accepts donations for Shwedagon Pagoda funds, inspects renovation works

YANGON, 7 Mar - Patron of the Committee for All-round Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the southern stairway of the Shwedagon Pagoda at 6.30 am.

He was welcomed there by Chairman of the Leading Committee for All-round Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Chairman of the Work Committee Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, members of the Work Committee and members of the Board of Trustees.

First, the Secretary-l and party paid obeisance to the Hsutaungpyi Padamyamyetshin Buddha Image on the upper terrace.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 accepted the donations which included K 3 million by the Ovadacariya Sayadaws of the Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees, members of the Board of Trustees, service personnel and religious associations for eight gold Buddha images to be fixed on the central pivot of the Shwedagon Pagoda, a three-tical gold bell by Deputy Minister for Defence Brig-Gen Khin Maung Win-Daw Myint Myint Win and family, chemicals and technology valued at K 2.608 million for prevention of water seepage in the works for all-round renovation of the pagoda by GEO-BCS (Myanmar) Co Ltd, 160 litres of Epoxy paints produced by Hempel Coating Singapore valued at S$1,600 to paint the steel tiers of the Htidaw which were donated through Myanma Five Star Line, bronze welding rods valued at K 2.25 million and a gold Buddha image by U Sai Maung Myint and family of Soe Min Htaik Co, a five tical gold bell by U Win Maung-Daw Yin Pu family, two diamond hairpins valued at K 2 million by U Win Swe-Dr Daw Yi Yi Hla (a) Yuwadi Khin Oo of WYZ family, and concrete chemicals valued at K 170,000 by U Khin Oo Aung-Daw Myint Myint Ohn and family Padamya Aung Pyay Dan.

After the donation ceremony, Chairman of the Work Committee Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint reported to Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt on progress in renovation work for durability of the Htidaw, offering of bronze and gold plaques and gilding work and renovation of the Sasanika buildings on the pagoda platform.

Myanmar engineers and members of the Board of Trustees also presented supplementary reports.

The Secretary-l gave necessary instructions.

Later, he inspected renovation of the Sasanika buildings on the pagoda platform, and the work on the bells to be fixed in the Htidaw.

After that, the Secretary-l and party visited Maha Zeya Atula Marazein Bronze Buddha Image on Gyartawya Street, Bahan Township.

He inspected the progress of work in offering the sacred Magaikdaw and Salwedaw to the Buddha image.

(4)  Secretary-2 inspects Aung Zeya Bridge Project

YANGON, 7 Mar - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo today inspected the project for construction of Aung Zeya Bridge that will span Hline River linking Insein Township with Hlinethaya Township.

Accompanied by Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander Col Hsan Hsint, and officials and departmental heads of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments, the Secretary-2 inspected construction of the approach structure and approach road on Insein side.

They later inspected construction of piers.

In the project office, Superintending Engineer (Project) U Khin Maung Aye of Public Works reported to them on progress in construction works and difficulties encountered, Deputy Minister U Pe Than on the flow of the river and conditions of the ground on the river banks, Deputy Director-General of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development Col Tin Tun, and the chairman of Township Peace and Development Council and officials of Yangon City Development Committee on shifting and resettlement of households formerly in the project area.

Deputy Minister U Tint Swe and Deputy Commander Col Hsan Hsint gave supplementary reports.

After hearing reports on the measures for peace and tranquillity and management affairs presented by chairmen of Ward Peace and Development Councils and authorities,  the Secretary-2 gave instructions.

He later met with the Chinese engineers and technicians working on the project.

In his meeting with the officials, the Secretary-2 said the purpose of their inspection was to meet with the project officials and personnel and fulfil their requirements.

He stressed that it is essential to build the bridge in accord with the set standard and pay attention to work-site safety.

He also gave suggestions on keeping of proper accounts sector-wise.

The main structure of Aung Zeya Bridge will be 1,903 feet, with a 1,032 foot-long approach structure on Insein side and a 650-foot-long approach structure on Hlinethaya side.

The motor-way will be 52 feet and eight inches wide.

The project is 75 per cent completed and it is scheduled for completion in August 1999.

(5)  Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Navy and delegation pay goodwill visit to Myanmar

YANGON, 7 Mar - At the invitation of member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Navy Admiral Thira Hao-Charoen and goodwill delegation arrived here by Thai Airways at 9.45 am today on an official good-will visit to the Union of Myanmar.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Commander of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Commodore Khin Aung, senior naval officers, Ambassador of Thailand to Myanmar Mr Pensak Chalarak, Army and Air Attache of Thailand Embassy Col Chaiwat Satondee, Naval Attache of Thai Embassy Captain Pravit Srisukwattana and officials.

(6)  Sayadaw Bhaddanta Malananditissa leaves for Sri Lanka

YANGON, 7 Mar - Agga Maha Pandita title recipient Sayadaw Bhaddanta Malananditissa of Valapitiya, Sri Lanka, who attended religious title presentation ceremony held by the State Peace and Development council, left here for Sri Lanka by air yesterday evening.

The Sayadaw was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Director-General U Sann Lwin of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, Director Daw Khin Nwe Han Kyi, Deputy Director U Than Win and officials.

(7)  Commander meets owners of rubber farms

YANGON, 7 Mar - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, accompanied by Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint, Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein, Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu and officials, discussed cultivation of rubber in meeting with Chairmen of Township Peace and Development Councils in Hlegu, Taikkyi, Hmawby, Twantay and member farms at Hlegu Township Peace and Development Council Office this afternoon.

The commander discussed extended cultivation of oil crops in fallow and virgin lands coming monsoon and cultivation of mustard in rubber farms as mixed cropping.

Division Manager of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise reported on completion of rubber cultivation.

Next, the owners of rubber farms reported on rubber cultivation and requirements and the commander fulfilled the requirements.

He also gave instructions on cultivation of summer paddy in fallow and virgin lands.

(8)  Phyu Sayadaw leaves for missionary trip

YANGON, 7 Mar - At the invitation of disciples from foreign countries, Bahujanahitadhara Dhammakathika Sasanadhaja Dhammacariya Phyu Sayadaw Bhaddanta Narapati of Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha left here by air this morning for the United State of America, Japan, the United Kingdom and Canada.

(9)  151 members resign from Mongphyat Township NLD

YANGON, 7 Mar - One hundred and fifty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mongphyat Township, Shan State.

One hundred and fifty-one members of Mongphyat Township NLD, Shan State, on their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mongphyat Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 9 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  Shwedagon Pagoda Htidaw Renovation Exhibition goes on

YANGON, 7 Mar - The Shwedagon Pagoda Htidaw Renovation Exhibition continued for the 47th day at Chanthagyi Tazaung from 8 am to 8 pm today.

Monks, devotees and tourists paid obeisance to the Htidaw and donated cash and jewellery items to the pagoda's funds.

Donations by the public have amounted to 49,393 items of jewellery weighing 167,076.6 grams, over 34.55 viss of gold, K 456,958,771 and 5,871 FECs, 2,739 US dollars, 767 Singapore dollars, 10,141 yuan, 18,664 baht, 48 Canadian dollars, 766 Malaysian ringgits, 318,500 Korean won, 251,800 Indonesian rupiahs and 14,549 Vietnamese dong.

The exhibition continues from 8 am to 8 pm daily till 31 March.

(11)  55 members resign from Thaton Township NLD

YANGON, 7 Mar - Fifty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Thaton Township, Mon State.

Fifty-five members of Thaton Township NLD, Mon State, on their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Thaton Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 18 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
